This is called MULTIPLE UNIT TRAIN CONTROL generally used to haul Frieght Trains having heavy load which is beyond the pulling capacity for a single locomotive and while going up a step elevated rail track route or climbing up and down through Hill areas.

3 WDG4s in the front acting as brakers in the Braganza Ghats. During descent loaded freight rakes need brakers compulsorily as there are no catch sidings. So orignal 2 EMDs would be power for the rake from Kulem onward, between Castle Rock to Kulem, 3 brakers would help the loaded goods rake down the ghat. All the 5 engines are live of which first 3 are mued with each other & the last 2 mued with each other. Triplet WDG4s are used as bankers for climbing the ghat & brakers to add more brake power to a heavy rake while descending the ghat.

Empty new wagons...no one noticed them..they r shifting with engines. To cut the cost Loaded wagons need only 2 engines here in ghat..a
