In 1892, abolitionist, statesman, and social reformer Frederick Douglass returned to the city where he fled enslavement 54 years earlier and built 5 alley houses for low-income families. Please join us today as we explore the incredible story of Frederick Douglass, and his motives behind building Douglass Place here in Baltimore. Thank you for watching and we’ll see you next week.
This is our series called "Five Minute Histories." We record short videos about different historic places all over Baltimore and post them on our Facebook page, KZfaq channel, and website. For more information or to become a member of Baltimore Heritage, check out: baltimoreheritage.org/support/

Thank you for this video! I am a pastor in Baltimore and have parishioners who were members of the former Centennial Church you mention in the video and would love to discuss this further. Centennial was not an African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) but a Methodist Episcopal Church (today United Methodist Church), there is a significant difference between the two.

Caulkers and caulking are still pronounced "corkers" and "corking" on wooden boats, for some reason. Everything with boats is old-timey!

great story, but why do you suppose growing up we were taught that Douglas escaped near little Italy?
