Hollins Market is the oldest surviving public market building in Baltimore! In today’s Five Minute Histories video, join us as we explore the history of this market and the community that used it. Thanks for watching and see you later this week!
This is our series called "Five Minute Histories." We record short videos about different historic places all over Baltimore and post them on our Facebook page, KZfaq channel, and website. For more information or to become a member of Baltimore Heritage, check out: baltimoreheritage.org/support/

My mom's parents lived like 3 doors south of the market on 43 S. Carrollton, when i was a tiny kid...and my dad's dad ran a fruit/produce cart right out front of the market, Frank Serio. I mainly remember the huge, delicious fish sandwiches on white bread we would get inside the market every week...with extra mustard, yum!......this was early '70's, i'm 56 now.

Thank you, Johns, and all of you at the Baltimore Heritage Foundation for this wonderful, engaging information about our dear city. If it’s of note, I’d love to see a bit about the two ornate houses across the street from the Rotunda on the grounds of Roland Park Place. I’ve always been curious about their provenance and history.

Hollins Market is also featured in Barry Levinson's movie Avalon. The building across the street is the location of the Bros. first appliance store.

Thanks for yet another informative video! When I used to live near Baltimore, I remember going down to that area for the SOWEBO Festival and to see the "puppet slams" at the Black Cherry Puppet Theatre! Also, weren't some scenes of Barry Levinson's film "Avalon" shot around Hollins Market?

Black Cherry Puppet Theater is still organizing puppet slams and shows there. I recommend taking in a show and eating at Zellas’s pizza, a 15+ year old establishment on the SW corner of the market and a local favorite.

I know the market was named after the street it's on; but where did the name Hollins come from.

@@baltimoreheritage1006 I have read that during the Civil War there was a Sgt. Hollins that died transporting POWs from Ft. McHenry to the B&O train station. He died when prisoners tried to make their escape. I am presuming that's how the market got it's name.
