California used to be my most favorite state. Now it’s a disaster. Everyone here noticed a huge price increase in everything the last three years. Prices weren’t always this high. As for San Diego, I loved it when I was stationed there in the Navy. Hope you are seeing a lot and enjoying the US visit. 👍

We agree that California is not the cheapest place to explore and budget has always been a major concern for us. We avoid many of the "attractions" as we are more interested in the National & State Parks. Annual Passes have proved great value. It can be a bit of work finding budget accommodation but we are not too choosy (a bit choosier than your overnights though). One of the main expenses is the car rental but once that bullet has been bitten then the open road and cheaper out of town lodgings are accessible. More family diners too. We have though managed to explore the cities too but usually choose somewhere to stay near public transport in a more suburban area. Usually though in America there is plenty of convenient car parking or park & rides about in the cities. As for signage I prefer to see the restrictions easily visible than to find that a fine arrives because I had not seen the one info board hidden in an dark corner of a parking site that indicated charges or restrictions that I had not been aware of. We have been several times to San Diego (really like Balboa Park) but no further south so we are keen to see what comes next on your trip. Best wishes and stay safe.

1. You snap the photo of your plate so you can enter it at the pay station for that parking space you are paying for in case you don’t know your own license plate number by memory or in case you might be driving a rental. 2. The voice you hear when you press the pedestrian crossing button is specially made for the blind.

Spot on list! The signs are overkill sometimes, and confusing! And yes, most people do not know their own license plate number 😂 (I don't even remember mine lol) High cost of living and public transport delays are very real in big cities like San Francisco, LA, New York City, and Boston where I am. I'm glad you turned it around at the end 🙂 There's good and bad everywhere.

Hi, Matt Well, that is why PPL move to CO and neighboring states, I figure If you consider that everybody's salary is above minimum wages, everything must be costly. You mentioned that the living expensive is high. In 2018, California mandated that new single-family homes and multi-family dwellings up to three stories high install solar panels.hahaha I am not at liberty to say about solution for your lists. Some left CA for CO or neighboring states for sure. Your list is valuable and unique as a Englishman, I reckon. You stay safe.

Hi Matt, we’ve visited California several times as it is close to Arizona. We agree with your list. The disparity between rich and poor is truly shocking. We’ve never used the public transport systems as we go by car. That too can be challenging. The roads are soooo busy and it takes ages to get anywhere 🙄 Having said all that…we love it too! 😍😍

@no_soy_rubio2 ай бұрын
Wages are higher if you're a professional (doctor etc). Police officers are on 100k+. McDonald's workers are on $20 p/h. My job in the UK was £40k, in California it'd be $80k. So yeah, quite a difference 😆

@no_soy_rubio but then they lose out on massive copay on meds and having to go bankrupt because you've needed a week in hospital. To me that's why they need higher wages. Australia for me if I'd been younger and more sense. Where to next Matt, or where are you now? Have you gone Mexico way?

Definitely how expensive would be on my list, right after how darn hot it is! South of Monterey I never saw less than 35C and i experienced a lot of mid 40s. Rarely experienced public transport in the US. Car hire and petrol is very reasonable with petrol being probably the most affordable on the planet. There are some strange parking rules, we almost got arrested parking in a space on the opposite side of the road. A big no, no. You have to park on the side of the road you’re facing. But yes California has to be the best place on the planet to live if you have a lifestyle that can afford it
@no_soy_rubio3 ай бұрын
Blimey, I guess you must have gone in summer? Hahaha how dare you park on the other side of the road, that deserves the electric chair 😅 I think the Mediterranean (France, Spain, Italy, Portugal) would be my choice if money were no object but California is great too!

I was born in North Hollywood and lived in Calif. until I was 30, when I moved to St. Louis, Missouri. I own a house in a somewhat upscale neighborhood here. If I had stayed in California I would be living in a dumpy apartment in a sketchy neighborhood. That shows you how much difference there is in real estate value even though salaries aren't that much different. BTW my parents met in San Diego in 1950. They met at a dance sponsored by the Navy ship that my dad was on. When his ship left port my future mom sent a letter to him addressed with his name and "U.S. Navy". Fortunately the letter arrived----so that statue of the sailor kissing the young lady is clearly an appropriate monument to all the military men who passed through that city.

Budget is not my number one issue when im asking
@robinsoncru24753 ай бұрын
I'm not who you asked, but Malibu is the beach you want (Venice is a skid row with used needles, and Santa Monica isn't much better.) Pasadena has some pretty good hotels on Colorado near Pasadena Community College, and from there towards the post office and city hall. The Saga right by the college is nice vintage, don't go the other direction from the college for a hotel, because they go downhill a bit. Good architecture and restaurants too in downtown Pasadena. If the beach is too crowded on the weekend try Altadena and Pasadena, and go to Malibu weekdays. Have a good trip. And put the metro micro app on your phone before you go. It's like Uber or Lyft but local areas only and very cheap, run by transit. Doesn't run late hours though. If you can get by without a car, you may want to plan ahead and do that, because traffic and parking are miserable. If not, consider Turo. It's like Airbnb but for cars. Have fun, stay safe, and enjoy yourself.
@robinsoncru24753 ай бұрын
Take one day and go to Long Beach, and see the Queen Mary. Plan ahead and be sure they'll be open when you go if you like what you see on your website. And I misunderstood before my first answer. It's worth it to take one day to see Malibu and eat one meal at a good seafood restaurant. There's one right on the beach opposite the Von's grocery, though I can't recall its name. If you like retro, go to the Fair Oaks Pharmacy and Soda Fountain in South Pasadena. It's really neat vintage, a perfect place for lunch, or just a cool, sweet break in your day. (They close early, though, something like 4pm, I think). There are clubs and good restaurants on Colorado in Pasadena. And you should be able to find some nice antique stores fairly near there if you like that. The Norton Simon museum is definitely worth a visit, and also the Getty Museum. Laist, the website of a local public radio station, can tell you a lot about the area. And you might want to glance at California through my Lense, they have a lot of ideas for what you might enjoy as a tourist. I'm partial to Altadena, myself, but except for things like Christmas Tree Lane during the holidays, and Rhythms of the Village, doing the Village Festival in the spring and fall, we're pretty quiet (good air quality, though, especially compared to LA) Anyhow, have fun, and stay safe.
