A shoulder dislocation is a fairly common injury in snowboarding, and one that is extremely painful. Knowing how to safely relocate a dislocated shoulder in the backcountry can reduce the amount of damage, as well as ensuring you can get home safely, without necessarily needing to call the rescue.
In this episode, expedition medic Dr. Lucy Obolensky, from Endeavour Medical talks me through two methods; Kocher’s and if necessary Hippocratic, to safely relocate a shoulder, as well as other factors to watch out for.
Definitely a good one to have in your tool kit.
As always, I highly recommend attending an outdoor first aid course, something you hope never to need but can be the difference in saving someone’s life.
