In episode 2 of Project Corrado, I do what I should have done months ago and have a long hard look at to see if it's really worth investing £7000 into it. There are many nice shiny modern classics that would frighten their owners if they were to see their undersides, is Project Corrado one of those or have the 27 years it's been on the road not taken too much toll on its structural integrity, let's find out.

As a feature for the channel it’s great. As an investment I think you’d struggle to get the price of the timing chain back plus the purchase price. Ignoring the other mods to suspension and brakes. It is solid though, if you keep it long enough who knows, just don’t compare it to your modern stuff. That plastic is 20yrs old. Looking forward to this if you keep it.

Another excellent video. Brings back some fond memories for me. Ultimately for me there is too much work in it. There is no doubt the car has potential but engine work, bodywork, suspension and brakes I think in the current market you would be lucky to get your money back on it.

On face value it looks like you’ve got a car with plenty of potential. I think your comments re: the throttle response is more to do with the fact your more accustom to driving modern cars with fly by wire throttles. Adjustment is super easy though. I’d strongly recommend you get yourself a Bentley workshop manual - it’s basically a mash of all the VW techie manuals in one book and will serve as a great reference if you plan to tackle some jobs yourself. Taking your car to Vince at Stealth is sensible and whilst costly, know that you’re getting the best knowledge and service with respect to a VR6. If you’re not already, perhaps consider joining the Corrado Club of Great Britain FB page - plenty of friendly and knowledgable folk on there. I’ve owned 4 Corrado’s in my time (2 G60s and 2 VR6s) so I’ve got a reasonable amount of knowledge on these so few free to get in contact if you want to chat stuff through 👍🏻.

If it's solid underneath, must be worth saving and reckon it will appreciate in value over future years. Interesting content for the channel too, if you can film some of the engine rebuild etc....

The car is well worth saving, but not sure if there's a profit to be made if you're having an engine rebuild and a respray. Shame it's not a late 80's fast Ford, the harsh but simplistic CVH engine is far cheaper to rebuild.
@mattsgaragex

Do it :) use Stealth for the bits you need and do the rest yourself except the paint. Make sure you nip the underside before it gets any worse and you will have a valuable car. However Corrados are quite niche and a mk2 16v you'll get your money quickly the Corrado is a slower to sell. If you're at Stealth get the head refurbd and 263 cams. I have them in mine (fitted by stealth) and the mid range is far stronger and you maintain the upper end. 220hp was my rolling road with 212 in ft torque. Re interior rattles - my next job to be honest. I think the corraso rattles more than a mk3 or mk2 golf. Foam and fabric trim tape is your friend. Lastly I think 7k is achievesble if you have contacts. Paint for a windows out jobby is 5k plus, top end, chains etc is close to 2k, new suspension, bushes etc is 1k, and the underside is well with DIY capabilites if no welding needed. Also get a leather interior (1k). It will cement the value - no one wants cloth.

I'm with you on the rattles... and due to 225's 19inch on my Gti it's just impossible to eliminate even the tiniest brrrr or rattle sometimes just from the dash. I just can't live with the noises though I've done my mate's heads in over the years listening out to see where these noises coming from so No mate i just couldn't have that racket at all. Send it on would be my advice that might seem petty but i would crash it anyhow looking over my shoulder for the one man band playing in the boot.

Have a CorradoVR6 myself since 1992 here in Germany. It's a midnight blue one. But I loved this green colour the whole time. In my opion it would be ridicilious to scrap this car with ist solid basis. Why not doing the timing chain, head gasket, hydrovalve and so on job yourself? There are splendid advices in the community.

Hey Volker, thanks for posting. I'm not skilled enough to do that work and don't have the time either. I am blessed as THE best UK Corrado specialist is a few miles from where I live so easier to just get them to do it. This car deserves restoration. The cost of doing it properly will definately bring tears to your eyes, and you'll inevitably have to shrug your shoulders over some stuff that can't be fixed anymore, but this is a Corrado. Any 'petrol head' and former owner of the VR6 or G60, that you pass, will be turning roud to watch you dissapear, and having a sweet moment of happy memories, wishing they still had theirs if maintaining it had been an option. You can't put a price on that, and if you do, you probably shouldn't be jumping in. Good luck either way, but as a former G60 owner with very many happy memories of that car, I think you should. Videos on restoration tips, including prep, rust-removal, anti-corrosion measures, paint-finish options, etc should prove popular for owners of older vehicles they love that they want to keep in good order. Mentioning any makers of those obsolete impossible to get bits and pieces, will be apreciated, plus any outfits in the UK who can rebuild interior trim, could benefit from a mention in this project. Another hot-option is the retro-upgrade, using newer stuff from much later cars that can fit, or be modified to fit the Corrado. Info like that is absolute diamond. This is a resto world project, and there are many owners and potential owners out there who need this info. This isn't a plug for their stuff, but I used some of Frost Restoration's products to refurb and corrosion-proof my Corrado and found them to be excellent even though the range of products and learning what to use, can be a bit overwhelming. Not enough channels out there are doing serious restoration, but it's going to come around for the older cars which ironically are probably going to be easier to save and restore than the newer stuff. Just sayin :-) Good luck!

Great video. I guess it depends on whether it's a 'keeper' for for onward sale. You mentioned a respray at the start of the video so add that on to the engine rebuild and the brakes, shocks, interior etc. and it looks like an expensive project. Not sure you'd get your money back on it in the end. Like to see how this progresses :-)

How come you went for a corrado not a golf. And why did you go for a vr6 not a g60
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 2 жыл бұрын
Easy question! The Corrado is a far more interesting car than a Golf, it's much rarer and was a lot more expensive when new and it was an object of desire for me. I went VR6 because the G60 is fragile, sounds a bit odd and is basically a 4 cylinder forced induction engine like pretty much every engine around today. Six is a bit special

Hi Andrew, Fantastic video again!! I could be wrong here….but check out parts of the vid where your camera is filming you driving - in the top left hand corner I think you can see the external trim coming away around the front windscreen (especially when at higher speeds). I’m sure you might be aware of this, but just in case 👍. Great content as usual & in my opinion one of the best channels out there for the GTI enthusiast, cheers

That seems to be in really good shape for the age. Everything is there, so not much required to get it up and looking, sounding like new. There are always going to be little things that annoy, but with a bit of hard work and attention to detail, it'll be a truly awesome classic motoring legend that are really hard to find in as fairly decent shape as yours. I realize that you have a lot of expense and work, but I truly feel it's going to be brilliant when it's done!!! Good luck! and I'll be looking forward to the restoration!

I've had a few of these and none had the banging and crashing you are experiencing. Just needs the interior tightening up. You should try and drive one of the 10k + cars to compare it to. Going by the prices these Corrado's are making at the moment I think that you won't be out of pocket if you restore it. It would make good content as well.

In my opinion it's definitely worth it , the VR6 engine is a joy to drive and mine puts a smile on my face every day (I have a MK3 P reg). I've owned 5 VR6 cars in the last 20 years and they've never let me down , unlike my R32 where the timing chains stretched after only 60k miles. It's testament to the 12V design that makes them bullet proof. I've also replaced a headgasket on my driveway , not that hard to do and the upper chain guide can be done too without removing the lower cover . Once the head is removed this can be taken to your local machine shop !! I'm looking forward to your next video I hope you perservere with it.

Great video on the Corrado VR6. I want to mention I noticed you say in the video you can't stand the sound of rattling in a car. I totally understand. If you want some peace of mind the solution is quite simple. Simply just replace all the struts on the car and the rest of the suspension system, including the sway bars, sway bar bushings front and back and tie rod end links, do it all and you won't have any more annoying rattling noise! Interesting that this Corrado has 2 brakelines going to the rear axle. Must've been modified at some point. I think its still in pretty good nick. Wouldn't mind having that one next to my own. The adjustable steering collumn was an option aswell btw. (Not many have it) The biggest cause of rattling is the ashtray btw. If you open it, most of it will be gone. The Timing chain isnt a difficult job to do. Easiest is to take the enging and gearbox out for that. Doable yourself, just takes time. If you have to have someone else to do the timing chain.. Might also go to a vw garage, and ask what they'd charge tbh. As for the bushings.. I can really recommend the purple powerflex for it. It really transforms how exact the steering feels.

do it awesome cars starting to go up in value if all done properly and an engine rebuild the mileage is irrelevant more and more are getting scrapped so the value can only rise as they become rarer looking forward to the content 👍

I really hope you persevere with the Corrado, it has the potential to be an amazing motor & definitely a classic. It's also an object lesson in the pitfalls of buying a modern classic too - particularly what you were saying about a "shiny" car being rotten underneath.

Just bought a Mk1 Skoda Octavia VRS in similar condition love how it drives I am definitely keeping it. I would also get that restored to its former glory.

Definitely keep it, if only you do the basics to keep it on the road.

Prices are only going up, so worth the time and hassle. I’m in the process of restoring my Mk2 16v right now with the intentions of keeping it, you saw said car parked round the back of my shop when you came to view the silver Up GTI.

I would watch every video that you put out on this car ! Whether it would earn you enough money as an investment, I dont know. But sometimes these cars just need saving .

Worth sorting with the minimal work underneath. She’s a good basis to start with 👍

Go for it,it'll be so satisfying after you have it all completed. But it's easy for me to say that 😁

After watching the video I had to rush onto KZfaq on my phone to comment! Seems to be in very good condition and doesn't need much work at all Scrapping it would be a crime almost Also you shouldn't need to rebuild the engine unless it's damaged so if cost is a concern just rust proof everything polish and ceramic coat or a good wax only get the timing chain and tensioner done and enjoy as is. Hurts every time a good car gets scrapped especially a vw Good content on the channel just maybe this time you were expecting too much from a near 30 year old car and feel a bit dissapointed compared to ones you've had before

Always preferred the 16v or G60 myself - the VR6 for me was a bit grandad! I think having a Corrado suits the image/history of the business.

Lovely car, I think you should go all in on this one! That steering wheel is just awesome. Will you be keeping those seats? Recaros would look great. Would love to get a Corrado vr6 myself, but you just cant find them in Norway.. Guess the rs4 b7 will have to do as weekend car for now.😬

A big project but would be great to have a sorted one in anyone’s car collection. It just looked so much better than the scirocco

Not really has less rust than a lot of cars 10 to 20 years newer not bad at all and the rust that is there is on replaceable parts nothing structural
