This is the MOST common issue with drawers that I run into in my refinishing business. Missing or broken wooden drawer guides. In this video, I'll show you how I make three styles of replacement guides, often using scrap wood to save money. You DO need a table saw to do this, or at least know someone who will let you use one (or help you, preferably, if you aren't used to using one) to batch make these guides every so often. It will save you a TON of money by making them yourself versus buying them online, and you can customize them to the piece if need be.
If you're new to using a table saw, I highly recommend watching some safety videos prior to attempting this. I'm still pretty new to it myself.

Angie, you inspired me to take on a dresser that was free but mdf. It was mostly ok but the drawer bottoms were warped. I was able to use two of the three bottoms but needed a replacement on the third. I wouldn’t have even attempted to do this before but after watching you, I had a replacement drawer bottom cut out from 1/4 inch luan from Home Depot . I removed the back with a mallet, replaced the bottom and reglued the back again. This has given me more confidence for more repairs. Thanks for this video because said dresser had the metal rails… but I just kind of removed them and reversed them when I put them back in…. I love your videos and how you kindly describe what you are doing.Thank you!

It has been a long time since 'shop class' was a thing in schools; and even then it was not a place where women and girls were welcome for much of its history. When girls were finally allowed in shop class, it took less than two decades for that class to removed from the curriculum of most schools. This video may be short and about only one particular item; but it could be considered essential viewing for anyone - and especially for those who do not feel comfortable using or welcome around power tools. I noticed that a few of your commenters derived inspiration from it. Colour me not surprised. :)

Quick tip from a woodworker: For the H style, there is a technique we use when making frame and panel doors that would be useful. You can guarantee that the groove is exactly centered in the piece of wood by starting in the middle, then turning the work piece so that the face that was riding along the fence is now away from the fence. Then slightly move the fence and repeat both directions. Continue until you have the width of groove that you want. The result is that the groove is exactly centered in the width of the runner. Maybe you don't need that kind of accuracy, but it might be nice to know.

Such good knowledge to share! One suggestion that might save you a minute: If both sides of the H are the same thickness (the legs on either side of what you're cutting away), you can just spin the board around after making the first cut and run it through on the other side. Then you can adjust the rip fence to remove the bit in the center if needed; sometimes it breaks off on its own. I learned this and many other woodworking tips from my FIL who passed last year. He loved woodworking and loved to share it with anyone that shared that interest.

Very informative, Angie. We just moved into a house where there are no guides in any of the kitchen drawers. I am going to make the ones I need by hand. I don't have a table saw either. Fortunately, I only have four to make, but I'm good with a chisel and I have a back saw. You are an excellent instructor. I think I can get it done. Thank you for all you give us. Love, Dave & Amy

Angie - while you make it look 'easy' and do-able. I haven't gotten to the point where I feel comfortable with a table saw yet..... I'm getting there - I started with a jig saw, and then a circular saw and I've even used a reciprocating saw to cut a pipe once! Table saws give me the 'willies' - like chain saws! Too many years in the OR with injuries to repair caused by these tools. But I believe that I can learn eventually. Your videos are always informative and reassuring!

Kickback! About 30 yrs ago, cutting half inch pine board. First time using table saw. A 5 inch board kicked back and the corner hit me directly on the pubic bone. It really hurt, so bad that wouldn't even be in the room when a table saw was in use. So, 20 yrs later I faced my fear and now own a table saw.

I bought a little desk so that I would have a place to study. I decided to go to nursing school at 66 years of age! But this desk is seriously messed up. It's just one of those particle board things that was painted and I took all the paint off I'll paint it someday but for right now I wish that the drawers didn't just fall out. One of them fell on my foot. The issue is that the wooden drawer Runners like what you are showing in this video are trashed trashed. It has the metal on the bottom of the drawer and the wooden Runner thing in the center of where the drawer goes in. I have a table saw but I'm scared of it. LOL I'll try to watch your video about 10 times and see if I can get the gist of how to fix it but. I did see some of those wood things for sale online. Do you think that I should just buy those?

don't have table saw yet, but I do need 2 guides. It always seems to be something with the drawers when I get furniture cheaply. I just have to wonder why get rid of a perfectly good wood piece when you can simply; tighten the screws, hammer in the nails, etc. Instead I see guides broken to bits because people are forcing the drawers. But again, that is how I get decent furniture at low prices. I guess we're more of a replace than repair society.

Angie you have hit a subject I really need help with. I bought and old maple dresser and the wood glides are still there but the plastic thing on the back of the drawers is gone so the drawers almost drop out, but just scares you that they will, when extended open because they drop down. How the heck do I attach the plastic guide to the back of the drawer so it goes around the side without taking the back off? It cannot be slid in from the front. I have chicken/egg syndrome! Wish I could attach a photo. I hope I explained this well. I have spent literally three ish hours researching trying to find this answer.

There are all different styles. The two I have a problem with are not like that. One has the plastic thing but you have to take out the bottom of the drawer to get the broken one out! I may even have to take the entire drawer apart. I think what they really want is for you to throw it away. The other one has a wooded guide on the drawer that looks very sturdy. Actually overly so. The thing it slide on is very flimsey. They don't look broken actually. I am not sure why they don't work. That will take further investigation.

You can replace metal with wooden ones. Use the shaping method you saw in the video to make the shape you want (such as the "H" shape). Then purchase the plastic glide pieces that you can screw to the back of the drawers that will fit the size and shape of the runner that you are wanting to make. Angie's other videos show really good images of the types of glides she uses.

I want to just say to becareful. its not usually a good idea to use the miter gage with the fence without a gap to allow the wood not to pinch it could kick back. if the piece is longer than it is wide this is especially dangerous. best practice is to put a small block against your fence to register against for use with the miter gauge.
