Since buying this old 1987 Suzuki Savage 650 motorcycle, it has treated me very well. The inner tube in the rear tire leaks down over a couple days, but that I can manage.
Over the past few days though, when I press the starter button it would grind and hiccup before the starter would engage and start the bike.
Yesterday, I pressed the starter button and nothing- no start, no crank, it wouldn’t do anything.
I need to diagnose this issue one step at a time, and I think I’ll start in the mess of wiring under the seat. It seems like everything is fine until I see a connector that’s only partially clipped in.
When I pull on it, I realize that the lock tab on the connector is broken and it will not stay connected for long.
I cut the connector out one wire at a time and twist, solder and heat shrink each wire using electrical solder and the heat shrink (part number 41016) is double layered with glue on the inside and shrinks 4:1.
Upon further inspection I also notice that the belt has been rubbing and chafing on some more wires going under the engine, so I fix that issue with more of the heat shrink and route those out of the way so they won’t cause any more issues.
I also find a better solution to mount the CDI and rectifier (I think it’s called) so they won’t see any vibration and possible damage.
Some of the upcoming repairs to the bike will be:
Wiring up signal lights and tail lights
Fixing the slipping transmission issues (maybe new clutch plates)
Adding an air filter to the carburetor
Clean the carburetor
And hopefully lots of driving
I’ve had some people ask for my address to send along something, so I thought I’d leave my address here incase you’d like to! I appreciate you guys.

The ls650's are great little bikes, and they sound so good, straight piped. I had a lot of fun on mine.

Cool! One thing I’d suggest looking at, which I learned too late. There’s a little plug in under the top valve cover which leaks and can cause your engine to fail, which happened to mine. Here’s a link to a video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l6p6e7iSy7GugIE.htmlsi=tAkDDVdSmWmzxOnL Hope it helps 🙂 Have a great day and I appreciate ya 😁

Gotta forget it sometimes eh? Keeps you on your toes 🤣 I can’t get any power from the signal lights but I did find the driving/park light wires so I bolted some old bike lights on it and wired that up. Hand signals it is!

15:39 I knew it the minute you started cutting only 3 wires: He is going to need BLACK TAPE when finished..... hahaha .. 16:30 These holes were used to screw on the rear fender. The "Voltage Regulator" is normally screwed on top of the fender (under de buddy seat)

If it cranks but doesn’t start, I would suggest pulling off the spark plug cap, clicking a new plug into the cap and push the starter button. Don’t hold the cap, it will shock you. If you see sparks from the plug, you have spark. If not, you may need a new ignition switch, ignition coil or wiring may need to be repaired.
