As a car repairman for years, when I see signs of a car being flooded, I beg the owner to run away from the car. Cars are built with computer systems and have the voltages you'd expect in a computer a lot. A car flooded, could be fine 6 months, a year, start to have issues, until it's an endless money pit after a flood. A computer, who's power supply that could start to rust and get high resistance somewhere... those high resistances are probably what fry so many strange things on a flooded car, but a computer is built less protected than a car from elements in design. I suspect something would just fry, more so even than flooded car components. I woke up really early before typing this, sorry if there are any typo's...

LoL, that was exactly my sentiment when I first saw Greg use it. I did however just see that the Thermaltake Dr. Power III was just released in Europe and will be coming soon to the US. I'm sure the PassMark tester is better on a commercial level as the price indicates, the ThermalTake tester looks pretty decent and at under $50 USD is more in line with at least my budget as a hobbyist.

It likely didn't overflow how you imagined. In order for turd water to overflow you'd have to have a plugged toilet and a failed flapper. Otherwise any water that goes into the toilet from a leaking flapper simply continously fills the toilet past the p trap and down the drain. The more likely failure was a fill valve that ran nonstop and overflowed from the tank of the toilet. One requires two failures the other only requires one.

love this series Greg :D Be quiet is great and this is the same exact PSU I have in my rig.. Crazy how something so tiny could be why your PC is running a little off or weird.. I was dealing with some weird glitchy laggy noise when moving my mouse in the middle of a youtube video, or opening a new window during and moving over the icons on my taskbar.. Started when I moved into my new apart a couple of months ago.. Well! today I decided to get a new Cyberpower Surge protector and plugged everything into that.. No more issues, My fans instantly ran faster on boot also! could hear them like they were not used to being that fast.. lol! I know that wasn't the issue here but still, PSU wasn't getting the power it needed and altho my PC still booted up wasn't at full potential with the old Brick I had everything plugged into before.. Was just time to get new.

I wonder if like a flooded car, with so many similar power systems to a computer, if it'd rust over time and just randomly take parts out and would have really made a mess of a repair later, which a lot of people, not this channel owner, might just give up finding a solution to and end up replacing it all.

As a former student worker that worked with hardware for university and now, a web app developer that a lot of times touches the application stack on our servers, I LOVE the series. You started the series screwing every motherboard you think would work but end up not working. The latest season show that you've learned to test the motherboard, cpu, and ram together first to boot on top of a box. I love that you've learned a lot as time went on and even used that PSU tester from the get go. Even when I have a new build, I always test the three and plugged in to PSU before screwing things in, just so I know power goes through motherboard, then I plug in gpu just to see if the entire system posts. When our main hardware IT guy for our machines told me about that PSU tester, my jaw dropped and wished I had that kind of tester back then. And even with multimeter and reference to check the rails, it's still hard to know if you're getting clean power. PS. Hot tip if you don't want to waste too much thermal paste and save some time, you can test to post a CPU even when you place an air cooler that has a flat plate on top of the cpu even without screwing in and without thermal paste just to test to post. The contact of the air cooler is good enough to at least keep CPU temp not crazy while idled on BIOS. It can end up with tiny scratch on the cpu but is worth the savings especially if you ended up testing more than one cpu. But disclaimer, I've never tried it with CPUs that run more than 150 Watts. Or if you wanna be lazy, keep reusing the same paste (except if really old and crusty) until you know you're gonna be finally screwing in the cooler so you can save some time on cleaning paste over and over. PPS. Now that you have a NAS rack server setup. Next thing you gotta learn is setup your own VPN at home to make all that footage accessible everywhere for yourself. Either set it up at router level with port forwarding, or use open VPN. You're gonna end up learning about networking yourself too.
@tradingnichols2255
@tradingnichols2255 Ай бұрын
They Epyc's I built were a PIA. Let me tell you. I reused paste like crazy because they're just so big. I've actually tried quite hard to pick up what Greg uses as a PSU tester. No success yet. If you know where to look or what keywords to use to find one... I'd appreciate it! Yes, I'm right there with you. I need to setup port forwarding or a VPN. Been aware for a while it's what I need to learn/build out next.

The probable scenario is that the auto water level arm/valve went out and the tank over filled and started flooding the house. It would have been very slow that source is not like a open hose. That in mind the amount needed to start filling a residence would have been over a couple days. Odds are the water didn't get over a few inches deep as it would have started leaving under the entry doors. The water from this area of the toilet is clean water not sewage. All precautions are to be taken anyway.

Hi Greg. That was a nice, short, and successful fix. When you placed his PSU in the ALIENWARE case, I was surprised the PC booted. I totally believed that ALIENWARE/DELL PSUs were proprietary and not switchable with non-ALIENWARE/DELL PSUs. Have these companies now gone mainstream? There is another good reason, if you own a male dog, not to place a PC on the floor. They have a tendency to think the PC is a tree.

Good advice, my PC is on the desk, never thought about a flood in that way, since I'm on the second floor.

Well that was a flush of entertainment. Modular psu's are the jazz.

Great video and always helpful. I have a question. Recently when I go to turn my pc on it doesn’t always turn on right away, sometimes it takes three to four button pushes. Is it possible it could be the case malfunctioning? The pc runs fine with no issues besides that. I appreciate any help. Thank you.

Components are pretty tough against clean water if they're off and allowed to dry. Boards can be smeared in goo used for LN2 overclocking, but when they're submerged into alcohol and inside a sonic cleaner they come out functioning again just great. Since a PSU circuit board is considerably simpler than a motherboard, it should be just fine. Although I admit I'd love to see some careless tests of this.

That's the case I got. But did a complete new system upgrade went froma 11600k to a 7900x3d. I took the front glass off for better cooling and put a total of nine fans in the case.

O.k. taking a guess after hearing the problem description: Do a physical survey to carefully inspect the system, especially the bottom area. Given that the power supply is in the bottom, I think I would remove it and test it (if I had testing equipment) - odds are that I would want this replaced regardless. If I didn't see anything else, clean, replace power supply and power it up. Optional: There is one fan that is at the bottom, I'd probably test it and replace if needed .... Now to see if I got this right or not ...

If I were him I would have a talk with the roommates because something had to be clogging that toilet otherwise the water would just go down the drain.

Flood or no... I think I would replace that PSU anyways. I wonder who actually makes that unit. And yeah... it's a pretty basic PC, but after a basic cleaning, it looks great. Also... liked the video just for the Creed shirt. If you like Creed, and you haven't already heard of them, you'd probably like Alterbridge too.

I watched this before I woke up but even blurry eyed, I can tell it's nearly a chic looking system all cleaned up. :) I wonder if that PSU would just randomly start to fail and take the whole computer with it as it started to rust or something like the horrors of buying a flooded car.

@@tradingnichols2255 That's entirely possible. However, in all my years of working on PC's, I've never seen one take out all the components. I've seen them take out one, maybe two, but never all of them. However, it's not impossible.

@@TheGameBench Yeah, I was definitely using hyperbole. While I was typing that, I was imagining internally a corrupted SSD, or memory, or worse a motherboard.
