I worked at a big shop in Calgary for 15 years. I just wanted to say the service you do puts ours to shame. When bike shops get big, they get sloppy. I'd love to work at a shop like yours where doing things right, instead of hastily is appreciated. Watching your videos I feel like I am again, for the first time, learning how to service a bicycle.

What I have learned from watching many (if not all of your videos) is the importance of preventative maintenance. I have cycled 2000 miles (commuting) in some of the finest Scottish winter weather (October-March), and from the many aspects you have shown in these videos, I have adopted them into my regular cleaning and maintenance schedule. The bike has not missed a beat and there is no requirement for replacing parts yet as I am able to elongate the life span of the components. Thanks again for the videos that you publish, they help so many of us 🤗

Im a Mechanical Engineer working in the Petro/Chem industry and I often see people using copper grease as an anti corrosion method, however its not really necessary - any grease will do - copper grease is specifically for high temperature applications in industry and can in fact cause sever galvanic corrosion if it comes in to contact with aluminium components. I appreciate youre only using a tiny bit, but its honestly not required.

Im interested in the 'this bike will now do thousands of miles' comments that you often make Lee. Had this bike literally done thousands of miles to get into this state of wear? I ask as my (mountain) bike has probably done roughly a thousand miles, 70% on the road. Ive made some elective changes in that time but ive replaced all the cables, two sets of bottom bracket bearings, chain, cassette, 3x brake pads, one rota, headset bearings, a jocky wheel, a front derailleur. Basically a new bike 😅 Keep up the good work, i always enjoy watching.

I also have this bike, a wonderful bike! What surprises me is that I see GP5000TL on the SLR1 rim. I only use the GP5000 str because, according to Giant, it is the only one of the 5000 series that can be used on hookless rims. I was just wondering if the user has ever had problems with the regular GP 5000 TL.

Great work. I recently received a new bike (Giant) as an insurance replacement for a stolen bike. I was really disappointed with the quality of the build up. The mechanics also laid the bike down on the rear mech just before giving it to me, which took a strip of paint off the corner. I dont feel the shifting has been right since day 1, which is very disappointing, as it's di2, but certainly no better than the 10yo 10speed it replaced, as i serviced the old one myself. I wish there was a quality shop I could trust here in Melbourne, Australia. The UK seems to still have people who care about the quality of service they provide.
@duringthemeanwhilst
@duringthemeanwhilst 2 ай бұрын
if they laid the bike down on the rear mech side then it's possible that the gear hanger is bent. another common thing shops miss when building up a bike is the rear derailleur B screw. If your rear mech's top jockey wheel looks too far away from the cassette when the chain is in the smallest sprocket, try adjusting that screw. loads of info / vids on YT on how to do it

I noticed that the wheels are Giant SLR hookless ones, and the tyres seem to be GP5000 clinchers. Normally only tubeless tyres could be used on hookless rims and clinchers may cause potential risk or failure. Not sure if this is actually the case as the customer may or may not be aware of this. I previously run the GP5000 clinchers on those Giant wheels (with inner tubes) without any aware and has no problems but in theory should not do this for safety reason

Great job, well done! Please, could you tell me, why are you referring to DI2 chain instead of just number of speed on the bike? DI2 or mechanical groupset would not make a difference to the wear of chain, would it? A chain needs to be replaced when it has stretched by a significant amount - 0.5 per cent stretch is the usual threshold for 11- or 12-speed chains, while 10-speed or under chains are generally deemed fine to 0.75 per cent stretch. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks

When you've sprayed bike cleaner on the frame, what "soapy water" do you use to wash it with the big softie brush? Is it a bike specific shampoo?

No it isn’t. We use autoglym but any washing up liquid is good enough 🧡

How do you remove peel off/corroded rear brake calipers?

Maybe you could do a Triban 100. It would be interesting to see a cheap bike being fixed up.

Hi Lee! Silly question, but do you use new microfiber cloths for every restoration/service you do? I got one which turns really black and after washing it still does not look clean at all. Thank you 😊

We do use new, it is expensive but seems the best option, however we use greasy or “used” rags on and on and only fresh ones for polishing and buffing🧡🧡

Another gorgeous service. The chain and cog wear show the customer has really put on some miles in the past two years, but that doesn't explain the headset condition! Any clues what might have caused that?

It’s pretty damning on Shimano that a R8100 battery already needs to be replaced. My R8070 di2 battery is still going strong. Maybe the owner got unlucky with a bad batch.

I was thinking that, kinked or damaged Di2 cables can rapidly drain the battery.

Mine lasted less than a year. I thought it’d be ok in my garage in north wales which generally isn’t cold, more damp. The replacement is now kept in the house until the weather picks up. I was a little disappointed as it’s my first di2 bike. The shifting is 1st class but you need reliability.

I see you just wash the handlebar directly with its bar tape, is it OK? I have done it as well recently the past few months of watching the channel. I'm only gonna remove the bar tape if I'm replacing it?

The thing that always concerns me about electronic group sets, is what happens when they decide to discontinue the battery? Eventually it'll die, and the odds of getting a compatible 3rd party battery pack aren't great. I don't want to have to throw away a bike because of a bad battery.

Yeah not to be a luddite but I find them dismaying from an environmental point of view. The embodied energy and resources (rare earth metals) required for a battery shifting system, considerably exceed what's required for an orthodox cable-actuated system. I imagine that it's easier to push/pull the shifter on a battery system, which could be enabling for people with problems with their hands e.g arthritis. Otherwise I'd prefer people not to be seduced by what is otherwise a higher-environmental-impact product. Great service as always Bikespeeds. Unmatchable care and attention 👌🏻

This is nothing to worry about. shimano will never stop making a battery that powers the entire range of groupsets. Think about that. we have di2 at 105 level. in less than 10 years it will be at every level. and when there’s a bigger market for third party batteries then a company will produce them. after all they are just lithium battery’s like every other.
