4th and final part in my 'fixing faulty Ebay junk' series where I document my attempt at fixing a RROD Xbox 360. In this update I breifly explain some of the options available for fixing the RROD and give my opinion on the subject. I completely rebuild the console and start the process of stress testing before finally reselling.
Microsoft's cooling system in the original 360 was really badly designed and is very inefficient. The fan shroud mod is a simple way to help direct and increase airflow over the GPU heatsink. I can't find the original tutorial by the guy who originally came up with the idea but doing a quick google search I found this pretty good one...
tinyurl.com/6b4...
It's not going to undo Microsoft's design flaws but it will help :P
This is the final part to the 360 series but I have more consoles on the way. Next up I have a Nintendo DS which is refusing to play games. I hope to do more of these videos over the coming weeks.
Thanks for watching!

Just to add my 2 cents...the reason so many of these consoles failed is because Microsoft chose to go with lead free solder on all of the 360 systems. Supposedly, lead solder is not allowed in most European countries and, in order to save money, Microsoft decided to make all of their systems lead free, rather than have two different manufacturing companies make two different versions, one with lead free solder and another using conventional solder. Lead free solder has a lower boiling point than conventional solder and liquefies at lower temperatures. Even if they had went with two types of solder, European consoles would have had a high failure rate, so the initial problem was with inadequate cooling methods. They should have had a better cooling design or went with cooler running processors, from the start. Like with the later, revised 360 consoles.

@shadowtsunami Surprisingly yes. It's a release console and they were noisy as hell. The fans are running at normal speed and the game is being read from the dvd drive + the power brick has built in fan and that's sitting just out of shot to the right. In it's defence though the microphone makes it sounds a lot worse than it is in real life. But yes it is noisy as hell and yes that was what Microsoft deemed to be acceptable. lol.

i like doing the Uniclamp "Fix" you have to modify the metal casing to fix some things, but ive used it on 4 boxes already, and they are all going strong.

@keearun Yes, Microsoft's air cooling design for the original 360 is very inefficient. The fan shroud mod helps direct and increase airflow over the heatsinks. It has been tested and proven to significantly lower temps.

i know that this is kind of old but if you still reading you should know that when you say reflowing that is just what you are doing, what you should say is that you should send it to reballing, the reflowing process doesnt involve removing the gpu

He only overheated it to determine if the issue was due to heat/solder problems, if your unit is working after overheating you are a victim of the EPA and lead free solder lol

@RetroGameTech Well for that time because thats why they came out with new models.. To fix hacks/flashes/mods and for less power consumption and heat making it less noisy... They just announced the brand new GPU-CPU pair for the Xbox360 Slim console, making it even more quiet and faster.

Certain laptops have the same issue with the solder failures, and the best solution I've found short of completely reflowing the GPU with leaded solder is to bake the motherboard. Works a treat, and generally keeps running without a problem.

+Kim Jong-Il Say, aren't you dead, Dear Leader? Anyway, yes, the XPS M series (1530 and 1330), among a few other high end models like that. But also those crappy Macbook Pros, and those crappy HP laptops, and that crappy PS3. It was a problem, as mentioned, with the switch to lead free solder in those situations where the units got exposed regularly to very high heat, particularly in regular cycles. Personally, I plan when I get a few dollars to spare, to get a reballing station, mostly to use on one specific project, but also, if I get good with it, to repair 360s and a few other devices.
@ncc74656m
@ncc74656m 8 жыл бұрын
+Kim Jong-Il Not sure if any of the Celeron laptops were affected - I never heard of any of those having that kind of failure, and tech is what I do for a living - along with paying attention to inane details that end up coming in handy. But yes, the XPS models were definitely affected, I had a few of them given to me over the years by people who'd had them fail, and they were all a result of the GPU losing connection.
@ncc74656m
@ncc74656m 8 жыл бұрын
+Kim Jong-Il Since the 5030 wasn't bonded in the same manner, that is, using BGA mounting directly to the board, it's unlikely that this is the same type of failure.

you could get a heat gun and re-flow it as that is used multiple times to install some chips to boards and such so it wont damage the console as the chips can take over 300 C before breaking or melting but usually 250 is enough to re-flow

@LarryBundyJr People say horizontal is more efficient and it probably is (very slightly). But to be honest the first version of 360 is so riddled with critical design flaws that it doesn't matter :P .

hey just something i noticed at 3:14 you say " re-flowed " but all a solder re-flow is is melting the same shitty solder back with a heat-gun. a re-ball is what you describe in the video they remove heat-syncs and add lead solder that wont break unlike the aluminum stuff normally on the console

I usually just reflow the solder by overheating it, and then run the fans at full speed. Fixes the problem 9/10 the other 1/10 its not the gpu/cpu it was another chip that needed to be reflowed then it worked.

@LarryBundyJr Theres really no proof of your console being more likely to fail from just having your console in a certain position. Although the 360 does have a pretty big intake grill where the console stands on when you put it vertically.

Do you maybe know if this fix is somewhat of a permanent fix? I know no fix is permanent but I hear most fixes after the RROD have an average duration of 6 months. With exceptions some fixes last 2 years but never as long as a newly bought console. Do you know why this is? Is there any permanent damage done after a RROD? Hope you can tell me.
