Wow, 1.99 is cheap. I should have thought of that. I had to pry up the spindle in a SEGA CD to get it working once. Glad somebody pointed it out to you. The trays in these machines open pretty slow. I like simple fixes.

Too bad I didn't actually need it! haha Something to look out for in future "faulty" consoles :) Maybe a bit of lube on the rails/gears would help it out a bit?

It might help yours, but didn't seem to do much for mine. I had an old tray loaded CD player back in the early 90's that opened slowly, so I just assumed it was a common thing back then.

Very nice to see one of these CD based devices brought back to life. The actual CD drive reminds me of some of the very early Philips ones, I think it was called a CDM1 or somesuch. Came across one in a strange FUNAI system, with two cassette decks, to the 80's Philips design, complete with dodgy orange "Red Leicester Cheese" gears, radio and a graphic equalizer for l and r channels. Alas the whole CD side was dead. You can always be cheeky and use a small section plumber's O ring for small belts, I've repaired many old EL3302 mechanism-based cassettes from Philips like that, which use a small belt for the REW/FF and some CD/DVD drawers as well.

Informative video. Just a quick tip I have used this many times, get a can of 'Platenclene' it can be used to re-vitalise rubber drive belts, a little spray and wait until it dries. You can also use it for its original purpose on printer rollers. 'Platenclene' can also remove permanent marker from some surfaces and works great cleaning sticky residue left behind by labels etc. Sorry if this sounds like an advert......

Nice drum throne! lol I love doing this too hey! I had a PS2 that I bought new, it died (the motor only not the console itself) so then I bought a second hand one a few years later to replace that console, it died 2 years afterwards. This one it was the console and the motor was fine as it was playing a DVD at the time when it just shut off. So, I did the natural thing, took them both apart and removed the good motor from the dead PS2 and added it to the PS2 that was alive but its motor had died. Bingo! A working PS2! But, I bent one of the ribbon cords which means I now can not save games onto the memory cards from the slots until I find a cheap replacement ribbon cord for those...

i was really triggered by both videos because i had the exact same issue with spindel the pushed down on a CDi i got. I, however found it out myself without any tips so i was kinda proud of it. In the first video (that i saw now) i innerly screamed "don't buy the motor!!" but it was too late. Those 1,99 € are gone forever. The second thing that triggered me was you saying "It has some kind of extension". Maaan... you are so lucky to get the video cartridge because it is need by most of the games!! And it's not in there by default, and are are kind of expensive on ebay. Lucky B... oy.

Just for future reference, the PC fans normally run off 12 volts. When you tested the motor you had it hooked up to 12 volts. The red wire on the lead went to the yellow 12 volt wire on the power connector. For short tests this will make the motor spin a lot faster than it has been designed for but at least lets you know it works. For longer periods you can burn out the wires on the windings inside.

Thanks and very well spotted! I addressed this in a response to another comment, but basically I was just careless and assumed the red splitter connected to the red 5v line. Sometimes when making vids my attention is more focused on the camera setup than the repair. Lesson learnt and thankfully no damage done this time. I appreciate the heads up! :) Cheers

The belt's probably fine for the job, but listening to the tray, it could probably do with a little grease in the sliding channels that the tray runs along, that should free it up to slide in and out smoothly and put less strain on the belt... :)

I was a little surprised when you diagnosed a motor fault without any discernable diagnostics. At least the unused replacement motor was dirt cheap! That new belt is quite obviously far too small and I suspect it may actually be a black elastic band for the following reasons; It seems to be very elastic and although rubber drive belts do allow some degree of stretch it should not be to the degree you demonstrated, also although drive belts are typically sliced from a tube they have, as you rightly mentioned, a square cross section whereas rubber bands are sliced with much less attention to detail as the shape is less likely to affect their performance. The best thing to do is to check the size of any replacement belt against the old one as it should be only very slightly smaller. Alternatively, you could try to measure the diameter of the old belt and check that the replacement is no more than a few millimetres smaller as although your belt was slipping is was not demonstrably stretched. Quite often such belts become hardened with age and tend to lose their stretchiness or become shiny and less able to grip.

Well mine has life now. I did that thing where you pulled up the centre spindle bit as it was brushing against the metal. However it now has a different problem. It recognised an audio cd but when playing back it kept on skipping through each track as if it was erroring out and was unable to read each sector. If I tip the whole player at a slight angle to the right if you are facing the player. If plays back fine. So I have a little cardboard box propping up the player on the left and now it works fine. Would this now be a cd alignment issue?
@RetroGameTech

Maybe the spindle is now too high/low and the laser is unable to properly focus on the disc. You could try adjusting the high of the platter?
