No need to "thread" it through the pan. you can spread the gasket starting with the front and go around the outside of the pan. :)

Hey we just did this with Rotaru! Had the 13B out to do a clutch and reseal everything. So far no leaks after putting it back in. Nice work!

A magnet on a long rod may have gotten that bolt out of the pan

My buddy. You can from the outside of the oil pan with a strong magnet pull a bolt right out. The bolt will fallow the magnet. I've done it👍

Probably for the better that I did it the right way lol! But I’ll definitely need to get a good magnet sometime!

Looks like you have the gasket for the one-piece rear main seal engines with dipstick hole/cutout on each side instead of the one with just the one cutout/hole. Hope the hole/cutout in gasket not being used isnt going to let oil pass if it isnt totally blocked off by the pan/block.

Now that you've got it down to a fine art, can you come and replace the rear main seal on my Corvette? I'm sure it'll be a piece of cake - 10 minute job.

I tried to do the same thing on a 388 I built while it was in the car. After fighting it for half a day I finally got it changed but definitely would have been easier and quicker to just pull the engine. Especially in your case where the front clip is already off the. But we all end up spending hours on something because we found a "shortcut"😂😂

I believe the formula for shortcuts is time to do it properly x3, give up + time to do it properly again. Usually this will break stuff, so we can add time to wait for parts.

Always put the gasket on block instead of on the pan. Lot easier.

Oil also comes through the non original steel timing chain covers (China crap) the original by GM had a fully welded frontal bow profile that pushs against the oil pan gasket, the replicas from Taiwan and China are point welded in this area and the oil comes through the space between the welding points! Aluminum cast ones are better but often the frontal crank oil ring is mispositioned in them due to wrong geometrics of those china castings. Moroso are better.
