Mechanic called this car "UNFIXABLE", but they were WRONG!

I finally fixed my sister's 2011 Nissan Versa after the mechanic said it was UNFIXABLE. From EVAP leaks and Charcoal Canister issues, to Fuel Pressure problems, and even diagnostics with the AC Compressor, this has been a rough 2 years for this car.

Hey bob! Initially I wanted to leave a snarky reply, but i am genuinely always trying to learn how to be a better mechanic, so I’d love to explain that at the start of this process I had 0 knowledge of working on cars, and the professionals threw far more expensive parts at the car without any sign of getting closer (transmission and fuel pump). I did my best to diagnose the problems using all the computers and readers I could get my hands on, even asking experts for advice along the way. At the end of the day there were multiple different issues, bad EVAP Valves, dirty idle air control valve, and saturated charcoal canister. While some may see it as a “parts cannon”, all 4 pieces needed to be replaced to clear out the codes. Perhaps I wasn’t clear enough in the video and should’ve quoted the exact codes that the car threw, but personally I’m very pleased with the repair especially having started the process with no experience. We all have to start somewhere, and my goal with this video (and my channel as a whole) is to document my personal progress with learning and getting better at working on cars while sharing my problems and downfalls along the way with 100% transparency to help anyone else along the way who wants to learn but doesn’t know where to start! Thanks for your comment, and I hope one day I’ll be a skilled enough mechanic that you’d be proud to have work on your car!

You covered 2 major issues in the auto industry. First is; I see reports almost every day of faulty china parts coming in NEW but broken. There is a good middle between no name amazon listing parts from china and branded aftermarket parts from china. branded is a good happy middle between the cost of OEM and cheap no name and generally has a much much higher success rate. The second issue is Mechanics, or I guess labor industry in general. The kids today are entitled, lazy and incompetent. I know because i have had to hire them before. They suck. Really not much difference in mechanic world. They have turned into parts swappers that only know what the snap-on scanner tells them. They are NOT NOT NOT Diagnosticians. Only the older guys are capable of that and that can be spotty too. It's a sad state of affairs that has affected me also here in GA.

Respect dude. I have the same thing with my mitsubishi going on over 2 years. Five mechanics including the dealership can't figure out what's wrong with it. Yet they all insist I change certain parts and I knew that wasn't whats wrong with it but I did it anyway and there's no change. I have a very rich condition with a PO420 code and the only thing left to change would be the ignition coils. It's worth a shot

Really good work! Lesson learned about cheap parts. Too bad though, a purge valve and tune-up is a pretty elementary diagnosis for a seasoned tech.
@nowayjose596
@nowayjose596 3 ай бұрын
So there's an issue with your theory/understanding of how the EVAP system operates and the effect that would have on the fuel pump. When the purge solenoid/valve is opened (by the PCM) to allow fuel vapors from the charcoal canister into the intake that canister vent solenoid/valve is also open (by the PCM). When the purge solenoid/valve is closed... that canister vent solenoid/valve is still open. Pretty much the only time the canister vent solenoid/valve gets closed is when the PCM is performing a check on the system (after the car has been turned off, for example). During normal operation it's open regardless of whether or not the purge solenoid/valve is closed, so you wouldn't be pulling a vacuum in the fuel tank from a leaky purge valve. Does your sister know not to keep trying to add more gas during a fill-up after the first "click" when it stops? Bc that's how most people end up with liquid fuel in the charcoal canister - by regularly overfilling their tank. There's a check valve that's supposed to prevent this but it can only do so much, and if you continued to have problems at every fill-up (that went away with the EVAP system disconnected) even after replacing the charcoal canister it suggests that check valve is no longer functioning properly and you may have liquid fuel in your canister again. As an aside, it's likely the liquid fuel in your canister that ruined the original purge valve AND the first replacement bc those carbon granules will gum things up, so cheap Amazon parts may not be to blame in this particular case.

Great comment and thank you for the info! Like I said I am no professional so I'm still learning how things go. For now everything is working totally fine with basically the whole system replaced. The car was used prior to owning it, so it was likely the old owners who overfilled and caused the evap canister issues!

If you don't tighten your fuel filler cap until it clicks or if you have a bad o-ring on the fuel filler cap you can get the minor evap leak code also make sure that it is clean and add a little silicon grease small amount thin coating to the o-ring and make sure it is not damaged.

Wow! Just wow! I had it pegged early in your video and those mechanics should have if they understood the scanner. Or did they even plug in the scanner? Surely they did so I'm thinking they didn't understand the stats or like many, are parts replacers. Kind of like doctors just throw some medicine at it and hope. Not knowing what stats the mechanics looked at but they should have seen the rich mixture for sure. Part of mechanics issues is that they are pushed to get it out the door and forget the proper diagnosis. Especially a dealership! So many things there that the mechanic should have seen. What's sad is that this new NASTF plan with IMMO and programming, it's going to force more people to a dealership and make it worse but that's another story for another video. lol Bottom line here, sir, is you didn't get to the bottom of this problem as to why it probably happen in the first place. With the charcoal canister contaminated with liquid was probably caused by your sister. When she filled the car, when the nozzle clicked off she probably kept trying to force more gas in the tank. In doing so, she got gas into the canister. I've seen that issue more times than I can count. If only she could think back after two years and try to remember if her problem started after filling up.lol At any rate, you might point that out to her for the future. When the nozzle clicks, don't force more fuel in the tank to reach an even dollar amount. That car should have been diagnosed within the first hour which is why shops charge for an hour of diagnosis. Another point I want to make is that NEVER rely on Amazon parts or new parts in general. Yes, with my experience I would have used the old valve that came with the canister but that's only because I've ran into the problems with new parts of today. It's all kind of sad but a great learning experience for you.
