Hi everyone! My name is Vasil and I am restoring my 1974 Columbia 45 sailboat. In this episode I am fixing the rudder cable system so that I can properly steer this boat on its maiden voyage.

Your master clip on the chain is missing a side plate. The clip just hold the side plate in place it is not designed to act as the side plate and will fail under load.

You’re 100% right!! Thank you for the extra set of eyes! Comments like this help tremendously. I’ll have to put that master clip in before my maiden voyage.

Maybe there is Slack in your rudder control system is Because the Auto steer is disconnected ?

Jimmy, you’re 100% right! That’s exactly what the issue was.

Is that an Edson steering pedestal? Looks like it is... look for "Steering Maintenance Part One Pedestal Maintenance" on KZfaq. There should be a wheel brake on the stbd side of pedestal (appears to be a bolt stuck in the hole on yours?) to lock the system down without resorting to straps.

Wow! That’s so helpful! Those straps were not ideal to say the least. Thanks for letting me know, I’ll examine that screw.

kinda looks like there is a part of that chain link missing at the link

also that chain needs to be lubricated

Sure does Tom! Seems like whoever worked on this boat before me had a habit of leaving out crucial components haha. In this case they never installed the rubber o-rings before installing the chain lock. Thanks for the comment.

Lost in the rocks? but seriously, what is the sprocket mechanism for? It looks like a gear reduction for whatever is connected to the large sprocket which drives the small sprocket to turn the rudder. Maybe the autopilot's small sprocket couples to the large sprocket by a loop of chain.

Patrick, the lost in the rocks statement was when I couldn’t overcome the current using my oars and ended up crashing into the rocks along the shoreline of the bay lol 😂. After looking at that sprocket mechanism, seems like it it does 2 things: 1. Redirect the chain so that it doesn’t rub against anything. 2. Allows for the addition of the autopilot system. Seems like the larger sprocket would be attached to the autopilot system, allowing it to turn the rudder. There’s a sensor that was attached to the main rudder assembly, my assumption is that would provide the autopilot with a feedback loop.

How fast will water get in if you lose the barring?

Much quicker than I can pump it out! Still waiting to install my bilge pumps! I need to get on that ASAP!

6:04 vice grips?

You have a very good eye! Before I figured out the slack in the system was due to the missing component, I was debating tightening the steel cable by removing the rope clips on the rudder assembly to shorten cable itself. The vice grips were attached because I was adjusting the clamps strength and forgot to remove them while filming. This boat has been a tremendous learning curve.
