I was thinking this whole video. Why didn't you just tie the back of the dinghy to the boat to stabilize yourself? 😅😅

I am shocked on many levels. First that you weren't kidding that you were putting a piano on you sailboat. I expected this to be some sort of click bait and you would end up putting a picture of a piano on your boat or something...Nope! You ACTUALLY put a frikking piano on your sailboat! Second, you can frikking play! Bach is one of my favs. Great video!

Haha, thank you Marty! That’s funny you thought it was click bait, now that you say that it makes sense. Piano on a sailboat, finally happened! Bach is amazing, one of my favorites as well. There are a bunch of his pieces that are on my list to learn.

You connected your chain directly to the boat. You should have some rode connected to the chain so you can cut yourself free in an emergency. That's why there was rode on the old chain. If you sail long enough, you will eventually have to cut yourself free
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter 6 ай бұрын
Arthur.... you make a very good point! I didn't even think of that. The chain can be disconnected in the chain locker by pulling out the retaining pin. However, I can see how in an emergency situation that would be quite difficult. I do have a bunch of rode that I will attach in the future. Thank you for the input, certainly gave me something to think about. It's great having people that know a lot more than you to give advice! Thank you!!

The Perkins 4108 can be rebuild in the boat for about 1500. I would recommend not using silicone it works in the short-term but creates bigger problems down the road
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter 7 ай бұрын
Good advice as always, thank you for that. I'll be digging into this engine over the next couple of weeks to see just how bad the damage is. Hopefully that Perkins is salvageable and can be rebuilt inside of the boat like you mentioned. What would you use instead of silicone? Someone else had recommended M3 5300 marine sealant.
@latizzo
@latizzo 7 ай бұрын
@@ambiguousglobetrotter 5200 is amazing but it's so hard to remove you are just as likely to remove fiberglass as the sealant. I would use a pu (polyurethane) sealant like 5200 but with a weaker bond strength 3m 4200, sika flex. And life calk, are all marine grade options but if you just want to throw something on it to stop the leak you can get caulking at home depot just make sure it does not have any silicone in it latex will work ish for very temporary use because it's easy to remove but they do sell pu caulking. If the crack you are trying to seal is thin and you don't want to tear it open Captain Tolley’s creeping crack cure is awesome at seeping into checks and stopping leaks. When I had a leaking hill to deck joint I cleaned it out stoked it with the crack cure then typed it off with a good pu sealant and never had a problem again. As long as the Perkins block is not cracked it can be rebuild in the boat, it's called an in frame rebuild kit and it will make the eng like brand new, if the crank is messed up you would need to take it to a machine shop but that is easy a new head I think only runs like 6 or 7 hundred and the rebuild was less than a grand.

Wow, a sailboat where mostly everything works. This is a boat where you won't have to spend hundreds of hours and dollars to renovate. The older Cals are very solid boats, hand laid fiberglass, as well very solid decks. As for the diesel, I would remove the injectors pour a lot of penetrating oil let sit for a few days. Mainly soak the cylinder walls and the head. Disconnect trans and try to break free the engine. Those are really tough engines and may be salvageable. Congrats on your new boat. So what are the plans for the Columbia?
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter 7 ай бұрын
Yes sir, exciting times ahead! You’re right, this boat is built extremely well, plus it was maintained over the years. Thank you for the advice with the engine, I will try the penetrating oil. Rebuild kits for these engines aren’t too bad either, around $500-600 for the block and ~$200 for the head. I’ll know more once I get a chance to get into it and see where the failure point was.

I like what you're doing, but I think the inside if your transom will need some additional re-enforcement, especially with that added metal bracket levering the motor weight. Probably would have been better to have gone straight down with the adapter bracket and not so far out and down. It's going to need some sort of sealant as well. I know it's temp, but a fracture back there could sink it.

The only reason I would think to take a boat to dry dock is to bottom paint it, or work on through hulls. If you only need to work on the boat other than the hull, you should get a slip for faster repairs. Even mooring like you are should be fine if you like the current pace of repairs. I am going through the same struggle on doing bottom scraping. I had a guy doing it every month, but he has since stopped. It's hard to find someone to do this, so I may need to do it myself. And if I do, it may be a good way t o make some extra coin.
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter 7 ай бұрын
I would love to be able to do all the repairs in the water. However, I think the Columbia is way past that point. I needs a complete rebuild. The keel bolts are my biggest worry with the ballast coming in at 10,300 lbs. That's not a job I can do while it's in the water. Bottom scraping is a complete pain in the butt, especially when the fouling paint has worn off. It builds up SO quickly.

I agree with jasper8598, I would save the money on scuba and move the boat first. Clean the hull after you get it out of the water with a pressure washer. If you do it immediately, it should come right off. Sounds like you have allot on your plate. My advice is to prioritize thoughtfully. Good Luck!

You can still move your boat with all that fouling on there, you'll just be slower and burn more fuel. From my understanding it's quite easy to pressure wash it off. My boat had been sitting in the years for 6 years and was covered and still sailed and motored very well. I also commented on your outboard videos earlier. I'm in the same boat as you basically. I have a bracket mounted with an outboard on it, a 25hp 2 stroke and my transom doesnt touch the water like your ship. I tested it this weekend and it works great, even in waves. The more throttle you apply, the lower the transom will go into the water. The bow will rise a bit and my transom submerges an inch or so. Kept full throttle on higher waves and prop didnt come out of the water once. If you want I can send you a video of it working and some pictures. Its very similar to your setup.
