Hi everyone, welcome to my channel! My name is Vasil and I just bought another sailboat. Yes, this is absolutely crazy of me, but this is what I did. This time I bought the legendary 1966 Cal Jensen 40. In this episode, I will take you on a tour of my new boat and show what she looks like in her current state.
If you have been following my channel for some time now, you will also know that I now have 2 sailboats. My original sailboat is a 1974 Columbia 45. In future episodes I will reveal what my strategy is for having 2 sailboats and what I plan on doing with each.
Thank you so much for watching, please let me know what you think of the Cal 40 in the comment section.

@@ambiguousglobetrotter I know the feeling! I have had my boat almost a year and finally was able to take it out sailing a couple of weeks ago. Similar to yours, my engine is dead. I currently have it out in my shop performing a rebuild on it and have installed an outboard. Its really hard to handle in this condition while under power but I only used it to get out of the marina. Sailing it was awesome! I look forward to more videos.

The Perkins 4108 can be rebuild in the boat for about 1500. I would recommend not using silicone it works in the short-term but creates bigger problems down the road
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter 8 ай бұрын
Good advice as always, thank you for that. I'll be digging into this engine over the next couple of weeks to see just how bad the damage is. Hopefully that Perkins is salvageable and can be rebuilt inside of the boat like you mentioned. What would you use instead of silicone? Someone else had recommended M3 5300 marine sealant.
@latizzo
@latizzo 8 ай бұрын
@@ambiguousglobetrotter 5200 is amazing but it's so hard to remove you are just as likely to remove fiberglass as the sealant. I would use a pu (polyurethane) sealant like 5200 but with a weaker bond strength 3m 4200, sika flex. And life calk, are all marine grade options but if you just want to throw something on it to stop the leak you can get caulking at home depot just make sure it does not have any silicone in it latex will work ish for very temporary use because it's easy to remove but they do sell pu caulking. If the crack you are trying to seal is thin and you don't want to tear it open Captain Tolley’s creeping crack cure is awesome at seeping into checks and stopping leaks. When I had a leaking hill to deck joint I cleaned it out stoked it with the crack cure then typed it off with a good pu sealant and never had a problem again. As long as the Perkins block is not cracked it can be rebuild in the boat, it's called an in frame rebuild kit and it will make the eng like brand new, if the crank is messed up you would need to take it to a machine shop but that is easy a new head I think only runs like 6 or 7 hundred and the rebuild was less than a grand.

Dude!! That boat does look fast that was not sarcasm should be easy and affordable to fix both boats that was sarcasm I can't give you any s*** though because if I didn't have a wife I would have eight sailboats I do look forward to future episodes your story is very interesting
@ambiguousglobetrotter

mwahaha! This boat should be fast, it won a silly amount of races when it was introduced back in 1963. Wives tend to be good anti-boat devices 😂😂. As you can imagine, I'm single, hence 2 sailboats.

Wow, a sailboat where mostly everything works. This is a boat where you won't have to spend hundreds of hours and dollars to renovate. The older Cals are very solid boats, hand laid fiberglass, as well very solid decks. As for the diesel, I would remove the injectors pour a lot of penetrating oil let sit for a few days. Mainly soak the cylinder walls and the head. Disconnect trans and try to break free the engine. Those are really tough engines and may be salvageable. Congrats on your new boat. So what are the plans for the Columbia?
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter 8 ай бұрын
Yes sir, exciting times ahead! You’re right, this boat is built extremely well, plus it was maintained over the years. Thank you for the advice with the engine, I will try the penetrating oil. Rebuild kits for these engines aren’t too bad either, around $500-600 for the block and ~$200 for the head. I’ll know more once I get a chance to get into it and see where the failure point was.

@@ambiguousglobetrotter Good idea, all depends on whether it was overheating or water intrusion from fuel contamination. Overheating of course is bad.

So why two boats? Do you plan on selling the other or using parts?
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter 8 ай бұрын
Jimmy, when the Columbia comes out of the water it will be for at least a year. I like living on the boat, so I needed another boat to put on my mooring ball. Plus, I really wanted to go sailing! This boat gives me the chance to finally learn how to sail and take some good trips. I’ll cover more details in future videos. Thanks for the comment.

@@ambiguousglobetrotter Right on and look forward to seeing them. Hope the solar panels are working out well for you!
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter 8 ай бұрын
@@jimmyteter The solar panels are working Ok for now. Not great but it gets the job done. I need to make an overhang above the stern to mount them permanently. So far I've struggled to reach above 10 or so amps @ ~ 13.5v. Seems low for 400w of solar capability. Also, the days are shorter now, so that eats into charging time as well. It's enough to run the fridge and the lights.
