It’s really frustrating whenever a movie director doesn’t respect the book or source/origins. In some cases tweaking may be needed but it’s sad to see a story loved by so many be twisted/tweaked into something more bland. Especially the characters being made more so into that of a typical children’s film...

@@discount_dora Burton changed Emma and Olive because it was more poetic, and thankfully the author thought it was a better concept and loved it. Um... there were quite a few kids in this movie. Unless the main characters are supposed to be, like, pre-pubescent, then there's no problem with adding a couple years. Additionally, it's a Hollywood tradition that actors in their late teens, early 20s play younger kids because of contract hours. Minors can only work for a limited timespan. @@evil-mf5bi Well yeah, but we know that the characters are aware of their age, because of that scene in the book where they were telling Jacob their real ages, although they don't act like old people. I think Enoch is one of the few characters that actually seems more mature than his physical body, and even Jacob thinks it's a bit unusual the way Enoch speaks and acts. There is this scene in the book, where "Dr Golan" found Jacob, Bronwyn, Emma, and Enoch with Martin's corpse in that fish place, and Enoch was saying an excuse. And Jacob said something along the lines of Enoch sounding like an actual 12 year old boy for once. Also, apologies for the long reply.

i’ve seen the movie, i feel as if only Horace and Claire remained the same to their characters in the books. i feel Tim Burton didn’t change them because their peculiarities were already quirky enough for him. Claire is adorable but has a monster mouth, very on brand for Tim, and Horace is very well dressed and proper making him “strange” just how Tim Burton usually makes his characters

As much as I don’t like authors not describing their characters, I see a purpose in it. I feel like leaving the characters up to the readers imagination makes it feel like their story, like their living through it. They get to choose their characters, and this can make the experience more personalised. Edit: it took me a second reading and seeing cannon images to realise that Carlton was a read head and Jessica was a blonde (from The Silver Eyes) . It can be hard at first, but I grew to live the characters even more over this.

I pointed out the Emma that the movie placed as a side character and said, "That's the love interest, she's amazing!" only for the movie to place Olive as the main character. I also started screaming when the ending hit, because they pretty much smashed the books together in certain aspects and added completely new things. If your talking about Kaminari, then not really. Sure he’s very energetic, and very goofy and good-natured, but he doesn’t give of the same chaotic yet well-mannered vibe that Willy Wonka does. Honestly, the character that gives off that energy that most would probably be Gentle Criminal. His name literally describes a gentle (like a gentleman) person who is a criminal, and a criminal is usually a person who does bad things, and usually in a chaotic way. Denki is just like the idiot everyone wants as a friend. Sure he doesn’t think his way through things, but he’s a great friend/ally to have on your side.

I think it's because of the black lineart. Dark blue was also used as black back in the time of black and white films to gain contrast between shadow and light. This is still pretty common in the film industry.

Definitely the least talked about parts of the movie's screw ups is the Hollowgasts. In the book, the description is that they have rotting skin and black eyes, and then there's also more descriptive info on them (I forgot the rest, I have terrible memory, other than the tentacles, which were pretty much the only thing that remained unchanged), whereas Tim Burton's Hollowgasts seem to be more Slender Man-esque, which just isn't intimidating.

@@lavender_milktea2810 Coraline is one of my favorite books, and I absolutely think you should read it regardless of whether it's like the movie! I actually loved a lot of Tim Burton’s film adaptations, and even though I do love seeing an adaptation that’s true to the source material. Some artists tend to make their own version while being faithful. That’s why people always say read the book before you see the movie; because films always have a tendency in changing settle little things here and there. Edit: Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was one of my favorite film adaptations, and several movies should strive to do the same as how Tim Burton did it!

The switch of olive and Emma is the single most annoying thing. I’m pretty sure they changed it because they didn’t like the idea of Emma being a strong, female lead so gave her less power and made her less aggressive.

Swapping Emma and Olive in the movie made me so uncomfortable, it was one of my favourite book series for a long time and having a character who was described as looking like a child basically become a love interest to an almost adult (I can’t remember Jacob’s age but I assume he was 16-17) just rubbed me the wrong way.
