Thanks Vanessa! I’ve had some pretty good results with bounce flash, mixed with some duds, usually when not taking account of which way the subject was facing - so great tip there. Also thanks for the tip on setting exposure with bounce flash. It usually takes me a few attempts to get the exposure right. Your rule of thumb should make that much easier. It’s so refreshing to hear you use the technique a lot, because I often get the impression some photographers consider it a last resort, or a poor person’s solution to not having enough off-camera lights and light shapers. I guess it’s a good technique for a second shooter who may not have as much off camera lighting to bring to the table at a wedding as the principal photographer.

You will have to get used to using your histogram for ambient exposure in the EVF with the switch from DSLR to Mirrorless Venessa. I like shooting both types of camera but these new R5 & R6 leave the DSLR focusing system in the dust for in focus keepers!.

You can but then you’re using up your battery faster, which may or may not work out long term depending on what you need to shoot and where and how many batteries you have and if you have the ability to plug in your battery charger to charge as you go

I also shoot with rf 28-70 f2 but I use camera off flash (with remote control). Don’t you have problem with weight the eos r and grip and flash and rf 28-70 during all day shooting :)? I thought also that I would have problem with weight of 28-70 but I don’t. It has very good balance, it’s not front heavy. :).

What was your white balance setting for the flash pictures that came out yellow? I use a Canon 80D and found out the hard way that if white balance is set to AWB (white priority) and a flash is used that the camera overrides this setting and uses AWB (ambient priority). See page 164 of the user's manual under Cautions, 3rd bullet down. This was making my flash shots come out a little yellow. When I switched white balance to "flash" I got better results.
@VanessaJoy
@VanessaJoy 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t recall, I usually dial the kelvin in manually but with the r5 I’m usually at AWB white priority. It’s not a huge deal when you’re in RAW

nice tuto. the ceiling is 8meters away, hard to predict how it bounces. isn't it easier to use a magmod magsphere/magbounce or a rogue flashbender 3 small on-camera flash ? your pictures are orange and a little dark so you must master the exposure in post processing to be sure not having too much noise.
@VanessaJoy
@VanessaJoy 3 жыл бұрын
Not hard to predict at all. Light travels in straight lines and is very predictable. I personally don’t like how the flash bender lights a subject and would much rather the light and shadow dimension of bouncing. The images are slightly underexposed because I didn’t check the histogram when shooting, but not a big deal really and definitely not underexposed enough to cause a noticeable difference in noise.

Im assuming your camera is on manual but I’m confused on the settings, at one point you said your settings are 1600-200 ISO, 2.5 aperture and 200 shutter, but the shots you take here are at 200 ISO, is that because those were the settings for this particular room?
@VanessaJoy

To be fair many times you don't have that much ambient light in the venue especially as the reception progresses. Since shutter speed controls the room exposure you will rarely be able to shoot at 1/200th especially after the DJ turns down the lights. Just my 2 cents.

@michaelscoots
@michaelscoots 3 жыл бұрын
You actually don’t need to be at 1/200 especially in dark venues. Look at your meter in the view finder. If you’re not reading any ambient you can slow things down. I often drop down to 1/15 (no lower) so long as I’m not picking up the room light. Also, working exclusively in TTL will fry out your flash quickly. Find the comparable manual setting - save your flash and battery life.
@VanessaJoy
@VanessaJoy 3 жыл бұрын
I have zero problems with my flash battery life. And my weddings are typically uplit and pin-spotted and I some want to kill the ambient light and turn the very expensive lighting they paid for in the room, into a blackout. so a slow shutter speed will absolutely give motion blur to the background and any fast moving subject being that I believe in capturing the ambience of the room they worked so hard on. 😊

I agree !! This is completely wrong ! Seems like she did not even check her photos and just wanted to pump a video out before her weeding.. also it’s just a SPEEDLITE.. those ceilings are too high up and too far back to be bouncing speedlite. Either use a strobe or use a dome to fill up your subject.. also the yellow is clearly from that wall behind the girl
