To be honest, what was he supposed to do? They were literally going to beat him to death. I think they deserved what they got. Plus if Arthur wasn't there, what would they have done to that girl? He was right to fight back. The acting is so phenomenal, I already saw this movie like 5 times since it came out and I can't get enough of it. The cinematography, the brilliant acting, the soundtracks, the dialogues, the deep meaning of the story,... It's THE perfect movie for me.

@@NuclearSmoores the law of self defense is to cause no more harm than necessary to save yourself. if you kill someone who has been apprehended, or is running, youre just as bad. he could have easily walked in another direction, went into hiding, or whatever else, but he chose to go the extra mile to cause unnessecary harm. that's what makes him a villain

I liked how he shot the first two out of genuine self-defense, but the 3rd was pure rage/vengeance. Shows the inherent conflict within the character, how he's a victim of his tragic circumstances but he went above and beyond that and chose to become a monster.

when i hear the trigger clicking hollow, i felt that rage. he wanted to do more damage. he wanted to go deeper and he wanted to kill. he didn’t feel like those last few shots were enough, and that’s what awoken the birth of Joker.

I feel like the third one was to cover the first two (completely legitimate) shootings, due to panic. I wish he had only shot the 5 rounds you have in a Smith & Wesson Model 36 - heard a few *clicks* and then disposed of the third by some other method - truly bringing him into becoming the Joker mindset the film is designed to explain.

I feel the laughing is a nervous,coping mechanism. I get a sense that since being a child he was unable to express, constant bullying, a mentally ill mother who let her boyfriend abuse him as a kid,all those supressed emotions, unable to be truly understood , made him eventually rage, like a volcano spurting out lava. The only way he knew he could be seen and heard was through killing, he finally felt in control.

The thing is though what if it is the mad dog, what if we are seeing it as jokers narrative. We saw in the movie he comes up with these wild fantasies that we the audience saw as real. The girl neighbor, murray telling him that he would want him as a son. In the end he tells that killing these guys was funny not in defending himself

What really ties Arthur's character into a bow for me is the pained breaths for air when he loses control of his laughter. It's what really hits home the fact that Arthur really is just in a constant state of complete agony, and that none of the laughter throughout the movie is real until right at the very end after he shoots Murray.

I didn't even notice until now. When the last guy was running to the other cart, Arthur had a split second where he put the gun to his head, but put it down and went for the other guy instead. You can see his mind juggling so many outcomes in that 2 second scene.

I don't think that it means he wanted to commit suicide , it was about about him shocked by his own actions and contemplating whether to continue or not .. also scared and angry all at the same time. The movement of the gun shows uncertainty and that he is thinking about what to do .. not suicide.
