Hard to say but I do tend to use my glass kalita wave the most. I recently got the espro bloom so I am playing with that currently.

I bought the plastic April brewer earlier this year. Mine doesn’t have any haircracks and produces really clear tasting results with their technique and a Comandante C40 MK4. I wouldn’t want to miss it. I feel in comparison the V60 allows for more body and sweetness when using April‘s V60 recipe.

I recently got both the B75 and the April plastic brewer (newer 2nd gen). Both have been a lot of fun. The B75 is definitely a lot faster. I’m using a 7.0 grind setting on the 1ZPresso K-Max. When I use the April brewer I’m usually at 7.5-8.0 setting. The B75 allows me to use more separate pours (like 50+50+50+50g for a 13g serving), which would start to stall a bit on the April. But the April is also a great go-to. Overall, I’m glad I got both and I would recommend people get both as well. It’s like having dedicated kitchen knives for different cutting needs.

Thanks for another great review. Btw, currently I mainly use April Brewer, the original ceramic one, and I'm very happy with it. It is quite thin, so requires less preheating than other ceramic brewers. Also it has very well-designed shape, that gives good turbulence, low water bypass and consistent flow. And I use it both ways - with blooming and without it, IMO it depens more on the coffee you use and not on the brewer.

After struggling for years with the Stainless Kalita Wave I finally decided to try getting a different flat bottom brewer. I'm amazed at how expensive some of these drippers are (April, Orea, Stagg). I saw a tip referring people to try the Wave filters in a Hario Mugen and that's now my favorite flat bottom dripper. Say what you will, the Mugen w/ a wave paper has a consistent & fast flow rate and produces good coffee consistently.

B75 is my first flat bottom dripper. I've owned several conical v60 drippers, and I am impressed by the B75 consistency. My usual go to beans are the ethiopian yirgacheffe, and will occasionally stall when I brew with the v60. Haven't experience any stalling since I got the B75.

I think I got the hang of the B75 recently and realized that I should grind a few notches down compared to other pour over drippers because of the fast flow rate. I'll be trying Ethiopian Yigracheffe next with my B75!

I've been using the April v2 ((FDA-approved Polycarbonate, Makrolon®) for four (4) months. Also use April filters and Patrik's pouring technique. I get excellent cups and consistent cups. Patrik shares grind size with Comandante standard clicks, so first cups are immediately in the zone, then minor tweak of 1 or 2 clicks up or down to adjust the drawdown timing for the beans. April v2 is now my preferred pour over brewer. Very easy! Very consistent! PS. No cracks with this plastic. I prefer the April v2 to the Simplify.

@@MichaelAhonk Patrik R has a video in which he discusses brewing 200 ml, 300 ml & 400 ml cups. The C40 click range mentioned in that video was 26 to 30. FWIW I normally brew 300 ml cup using 26 or 27 clicks. 3 pours of 100 ml spaced about 30 seconds apart.

Asser. Give the Normcore flat bottom brewer a try. Very fast drawdowns. One of my friends swears it’s even faster than the orea!

I have the glass Kalita Wave 155. I think it is a great brewer. It's consistent, easy to use, and makes great coffee. The flow rate is just right, not too fast or slow. The V60 tends to become increasingly slow with each consecutive pour, so that if you are doing a bloom + 3 or more pours, I find that the Wave actually draws down faster for a given grind size (unless you modify the V60 pours to be faster and mostly in the center). However, it is rather small, so it's definitely for single servings only. I guess that would be its main downside, though for me that doesn't matter.

Glass 155 is decent, but yes, quite tiny. Simplify and B75 are much more flexible with doses.

I would disagree that you have to use the Orea as a no bypass brewer. I use it with 185 size filters and get very consistent results. It was an improvement over the stainless steel Kalita and is very similar to the yama dripper. It is my to go to daily dripper. What I do agree with is that the grinder and water quality matters much more than the dripper. You can always adjust the grind for the method you are brewing with.

Your video gave me revelation, I instantly brewed my coffee using April with 2 pours method & the result is the best among other drippers. Would you believe that I tried to sell that dripper last month? Now I completely changed my mind about the April dripper, thank a lot Asser

That's fantastic to hear. I find that the two-pour recipe works very well as long as you dial in the grind size and stay around 12-17 grams.

Try to go finer with b-75 you will get higher extraction at a faster flow rate

While I agree with what you say about the Orea V3, it can still be used and works very well with Kalita-style wave filters.

Idk man i am struggling with the orea wave filter brews. I have had it for about a month and made at least 40-50 with it and they are always not great and always go back to my v60. I’ve tried super fine grind, super course grind and everything in between. While i know it’s possible no doubt, im just frustrated with how finicky it’s been. I have the negotiator on the way and am hopeful i can get some good consistent results. The most frustrating part is that everyone on the internet is obsessed with the orea and i just can’t seem to nail it lol this is the dripper that has given me the most headache for sure, i usually can dial a technique down after a few brews, but the orea is challenging me

I’ve had a similar experience and it was a huge frustration. Eventually, after dozen tests, I’m getting remarkable results with fellow Stagg papers and following receipt: 15/250ml, 45ml bloom 45-60 sec, 50 ml pours, finish around 2:45-3:00 depending on beans/grind

@@coffeechronicler If you could compare the new trico with the old one that would be interesting too! I have an old version so I'm curious how the changes translate to a different coffee. I think they changed the shower screen and the bottom part, but does it change anything if you do wet WDT (which is recommended by Tricolate guys and does change the taste)? Would be great to know.

Orea V3 is my favourite flat bottom brewer easily. Extremely consistent. I love using it with the negotiator. I really want to try the Espro bloom but there isn’t much information on it. Really worried about thermal stability with it.

As for Espro...the Espro paper filters can be fitted, though not simply, to some other drippers. I like them better than the dripper itself, although the dripper flow rate is fast (as some people want that).

I don’t understand why so many people say they struggle to get good results from a Kalita. I’ve had a Kalita Wave 155 for a couple of years now and it’s consistently good to use. The only time I get poor results from it is when I get something wrong with the recipe. Not all coffees suit it, but for the majority that work well like this it’s great as long as I get all the parameters right.

Same here I have had very few problems with my Sagan 155 although the 185 does seem more prone to stall. I struggled with using a V60 could not get the hang of complex pouring and stirring /swirling how can that ever be consistent ? I use TCC 's Kalita Gabi B method its been consistent and easy. I focus more on water temp /grind size and I do preheat . I did have the issue of my 155 favoring one drain hole or sometimes two . I thought my counter top was level but it wasn't I just recently resolved this by putting a penny under the corner of my Timemore black mirror and now it drains properly out of all three or center .

The Kalita 185 stainless steel was the first dripper that I bought when I first got really into coffee. The Kalita at those time had a thin gauge of wire welded on the base to prevent the filters from clogging the drain holes. With that particular dripper I get stalled brews fairly often. I also have the Sagan and the Tsubane cooper version and those stall less often. What I think it is they stamp in the raisers as oppose to welding them on. I used to look down on the plastic versions of droppers including the v60. But now from a strictly brewing/heat perspective plastic is better they require less preheat. The Kalita is far from a bad dripper its just other drippers like the Orea have innovated a little to make more consistent dripper.

Hi, I have question about the B75. In the video it looked like the B75 plastics was coloured by coffee (or it was just little bit dirty from brewing?) so maybe the dark version would be better?

Thanks, Jose! It's possible to get it to fit, but it's an awkward fit, where you have to squeeze it onto the edges to due to the small fins of the Drip Assist. And then it will be kinda stuck and difficult to take off in the middle of a brew. Hope that makes sense :)

bit of a nitpick but not a fan of the trend of not adding handles to these newer brewers. It just feels soo much better handling and cleaning a dripper with a handle.

I have been team April v2 for the past few months and I really do appreciate its consistency, fast flow rate, and the relatively easy two-pour technique by Patrik. However, I'm interested to invest on either B75, thanks to your review Asser, or Orea V3. Which one would you recommend first? B75 is cheaper here though. Haha..

In some markets, Timemore B75 is around 3-4 times cheaper than the Orea, so would probably start with that one :)

I own a plastic April brewer, a glass April and a Orea. I don't find any difference between the plastic April and the glass one and both of them are my favorite brewers.

I'm not sure I could be convinced to use a flat bottomed brewer again, solely because I hate the Kalita filters. They're too expensive, they're miserable to separate from eachother, they have to be re-shaped once separated, and the rinse usually causes the frills to bunch up to one side. Plus the metal kalita 185 retains a few grams of water at the bottom, including when you rinse your filter. Kalita rant over. But on your recommendation I was happy to find the cafec flower. The plastic flower began to crack after a year of use but the ceramic has so far treated me well

I really like my Kalita 155 Sagan the rough natural finish causes the filters cling to the sides .I use it with the Gabi B with your recipe. I just recently tried to even balance my timemore scale flat using a penny under the corner of the scale so now , I get all three of the Kalita holes draining, I have been brewing with the Sagan ,15 gr to 250 ,2 to 3 brews a day for a around 2 yrs now and most coffees drain well and never stall Brew times are always 2 -2.5 min after a 45 sec bloom. I did try using the April brewer plastic ground as I do with the JX and my 155 and it stalled badly maybe it is intended for a courser grind? I was kind of surprised considering the large opening .I then tried the April with a Sibarist flat filter and that drained quite well. But the filters are expensive and a bit of a pain to fold , also the Sibarist are a bit less clean tasting .So Kalita 155 Sagan pre heated and gabi b has been doing great for me . I particularly like light Ethiopian naturals they don’t seem to stall at all even when ground a bit finer .I will add really liking my new ZP6 ( prior I was using a JX ) draw down is faster , maybe 15 sec or so and brews are cleaner tasting and I can grind finer.Thanks for all the informative reviews . The Kalita wave review was how I found your webpage researching getting a Kalita.

Hey I was interested in getting the Kalita 185 sagan. How do you clean it? I saw it was recommended to use a sponge after each use since its not glazed? hows your experience cleaning it?

@@caffec I just rinse it after each use ( I brew 2-3 a day with my 155 ) then I scrub it with baking soda and vinegar and rinse for the next morning. Also I use a small straw cleaner brush to clean the 3 holes this prob helps it drain well .

I just received my TimeMore B75 yesterday and tested it for the first time today. I did not realize how small it is! It said 1-2 cups and I usually brew two, but it is a tight fit. It was a bit of a challenge to pour without stopping so much, thought the flow was not an issue and it never stalled. I might have to dial in the dose, as my 30g to 500g did not get me the same as I would get on my V60. It's my first flat bottom brewer too, so I am wondering if I can lower the dose and get better results. Any thoughts?

This is device is more of an in-between size. If you use the bigger Kalita 185 filters, you get an extra inch and can go a bit higher volume-wise. However, I wouldn't recommend brewing more than 22-23 g with the B75. Technically, this can still yield two cups, although small. For 500ml/30 g batches, I'd definitely look for a different brewer such as the big Kalita Wave.

@@coffeechronicler Thanks very much for the reply! I also bought some extra filters, so I will have to do single cups while I wait to use those and get the Kalita later. I have no way to really measure other than taste, but do you think the flat bottom, with less bypass, would yield higher extraction and therefore lend itself to lower does?

@@FER_R There is always a lot of speculation about bypass but IMO the difference between cone-shaped and flat is minimal in this regard. The same EY and ratios apply to both types. The only exception to that rule would be the Tricolate where you can easily brew at a 1:20 ratios. But tbh, those brews rarely taste better than a standard 1:16.6 pour over. The main advantage of no-bypassing is that you save a bit of coffee and feel like you're on the frontier of manual brewing :)

The 185 is the better fit IMO. The 155 can lose its structure a bit.

It it fits April fine, but not really the two others. You can sort of squeeze it onto B75 and get it to work, though.

It is worth considering that all plastics can release chemicals when exposed to heat, and Tritan has faced controversy in the past. I hope you get a chance to use/review the Hario Mugen. The company advertises it as being suitable for a single pour, but I have seen some Japanese brewers using the 4-6 method with it. I use it that way. I have the ceramic version and I really enjoy using it, along with the Cafec Flower ceramic dripper.
