A slip ring (in electrical engineering terms) is a method of making an electrical connection through a rotating assembly. Made this for a marble machine I am working on where the motor needs to spin around with the assembly.

I made a suggestion on another channel with marble machines, and I want to make that same suggestion to you. Why not make the rails that the marbles run on hot with a POS and NEG and the steel marble completes the circuit and maybe lights up some LED or even starts and runs a motor for short durations? I think it would be cool to have lights, and more actions going on like a spinning wheel as the steel ball rolls around. Just a thought here. I LOVE your videos and please keep up the GREAT work.

Funny thing, when I built my shop I never intended to do any woodworking (and had not done any woodworking) so I did not insulate or heat it. It is a solid steel building and like trying to heat a giant radiator. I would die of the exhaust before a kerosene heater would raise the temperature 10 degrees - tried it. :-)

I saw your comment on denha’s channel. It is actually something I have considered for a low voltage circuit. The spacing of the rails needs to be VERY precise for the bearings and they are usually held apart by a bent piece, which is soldered to both. Maintaining the spacing of the two rails while not having them connected is problematic to say the least. I have considered a third rail, which is very problematic for any contact duration while not slowing or stopping the bearing.

Your ideas and creativity never take a holiday nor cease to amaze! Why not consider one of those kerosene heaters for the shop on those cold winter days? I use one and it only takes a few minutes to warm things up to a comfortable level. Their fuel consumption is what I'd call fairly reasonable. Just a thought.

it would be a great idea to put an axial bearing, between the two separte platforms, the stationary and the movable parts. 👌

Heavy-duty industrial versions are used every day. The motor in my video is small, amperage low and the brass ring relatively thin. Wiper brushes would need to be at least the same size used in your grinder. Probably best if there are separate wiper brushes for each grinder. Highest amps are at starting-up and when grinding. Do not overload the grinder. No load start. Light touch when grinding. Google ELECTRICAL SLIP RINGS for commercial products and they are enclosed and insulated. Good Luck.

Block machined from Delrin (acetal resin or Polyoxymethylene plastic) which machines, drills and taps well. Brushes from Arrowhead Electric Co. No. 406 Round Brush. You’ll have to do some Google searches for Electrical Slip Ring. They are available from 3 to 60 rings but you will need to determine what suits your purpose (dimensions, voltage, current handling capability, RPM, etc). Good luck!

I see what you're saying now. Why not use heavier wire where current is used so they do not need to be soldered together? Or what if your 3rd rail was ABOVE the bearing and it rolled through a series of dangling lightweight wires that hung down freely and were the other side of the circuit? As the ball rolled through the hanging wires, it just keeps completing the circuit or it could even complete a different circuit for each wire?

Great video Ronald. What material did you make the block out of for the electrical connections that house the springs and the carbon brushes. I've tried to do searches and I'm not able to find that style of carbon brushes. Do you know where I can find those materials to make my own? Also you mentioned that they were available already made commercially. Do you know if they are available in a 4 contact style? If so where? I'm looking to create a setup with 4 rings.

Hi Ronald. Thanks for the great video. Do you know if a small slip ring can be made for something like a power strip/surge protector? It needs only to be one circuit, turn 360 (doesn't have to spin - ever), about .5"D...but handle 30A. Doable?

I wanted to do somthing similar to this with my motorcycle .. there is a company that sells the kit for 290 . Gives your wheels power so you can insert leds and power while driving . But they make a slip ring with 3 different rings for 3 different powers for each light color . Did you order these slip rings to have them made ?

Nice job. Quick question did you get any anomalies in voltage (spikes drops distorded wave form etc). I am asking because I would like to do something like that but electronics will be powered and anomalies like described above are not a very good thing. Also would it be possible to pass through more complex signals like VGA or HDMI wit the addition of rings of cource.
@RonaldWalters2010

I haven't noticed anything. This is running a shaded pole motor with a large gear box so even if the power interrupted momentarily the motor would coast and for my application I wouldn't notice it. Some or the larger slip rings are used for overhead cranes (high voltage and large motors). If you google Electrical Slip Ring you will find manufacturers who make these for all sorts of communication/data transmission for various applications including subsea robots. I don't know if you could make your own but I'm certain VGA or HDMI would certainly be something that has already been manufactured... the price might be a shock.

Awesome video mate!! Do you have access to a cnc or did you pay someone to cut this out And do you have more infomation on how you made the brushes?? Cheers
@RonaldWalters2010
@RonaldWalters2010 6 жыл бұрын
I used a company with a CNC water jet machine to cut the brass part. You need to look round for some round carbon brushes and make a holder like I did. I have a small washer soldered to the end of a wire which is fed through a brush hole first... then the brush spring makes contact with the washer when the brush is placed into the hole.

Great job, and looks professional! I can't seem to find that big Delrin cube. Instead, do you think it would work if I drill a piece of wood block and insert the brushes in it?
@RonaldWalters2010
@RonaldWalters2010 6 жыл бұрын
On eBay search for Delrin or Acetal and you will find all you want but it is not cheap. Possibly a local machine shop or materials supply. Wood may be a bit rough for the springs. In my opinion it would best be made of Delrin or some plastic like plexiglas, lucite, perspex, acrylic. The easiest to machine is Delrin and it holds threads well.

Ron Good vid, in the US you have 110V and I note you say about not sticking your fingers in it so I am assuming you are using the grid supply of 110 VAC, Would there be any reason why I could not achieve the same over here in Spain with 220 VAC, It can all be sealed in a box, I want to make a turntable and have a 220 volt supply on the turntable to power items turning which I would not be able to do and these items are AC voltage. I was thinking of using slip rings of ebay but the wires dont seem thick enough, for a socket here we are supposed to use 2.5mm so the motor that drives the turntable will DC I expect and the voltage ontop of the turntable will be 220v in a closed socket
@RonaldWalters2010
@RonaldWalters2010 7 жыл бұрын
You should be able to do the same thing... just need to make sure the metal and the brushes are suitable for whatever you are running. Your 220 VAC will kill you twice as fast as our 110 VAC... but your 50Hz won't shake you quite as fast as our 60Hz. :-) It really does need to be fully enclosed. Heavier commercial slip rings are available (for a price) as they are often used on overhead cranes. It is usually the lighter robotic or communication stuff we see listed on eBay.
@spiritburners

Ok Thanks for the heads up on that, I will see what all the parts cost, I can get a complete finished unit for 120 euros on painted and with 3 sockets , so i will price it up and if its near I might just buy the one made here it suitable for up to 50KG and be safe.. Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi! Does the surface area or gauge of the brass sheet effect anything?
@RonaldWalters2010
@RonaldWalters2010 8 ай бұрын
Surface area needs to agree with the contact area of the carbon brushes plus a little extra for any runout. Gauge needs to be sufficient for the power being transmitted (i.e. a very thing sheet or foil might burn out like a fuse). There is always the possibility of some arcing between the brushes and the brass. Thanks for watching and subscribing! Ron
