I have been flat-footed my entire life. About 9 years ago in my early 50’s I developed crippling plantar fasciitis . I had gotten by for years in good Brooks athletic shoes, fit in a running shop by people who took one look at my feet and knew what shoe I needed. I would break down a pair of shoes every 6 months. When I finished that phase and changing shoes no longer worked, they sent me to a pedorthist, who made me very expensive, but very wonderful, full sole custom orthotics. My plantar fasciitis was cured in less than 2 weeks! That pair of orthotics lasted 5 years!! They are limiting, as not every shoe has a deep enough foot bed to use these monsters, but I walk without pain! I just want to encourage anyone with overpronation to not give up...relief is available!

I second this as someone who also got custom inserts. I play golf almost every weekend in MN (when it's not cold) and I'm too cheap for a cart so I walk, that's usually 4-7 miles depending on the course. I would get home with terrible foot pain and had to ice them each time. Btw I was only 19 at the time. Golf shoes are plenty deep as the insert is the only cushion between your foot and hard plastic that holds the spikes. So, got the customs and it felt like someone shoved a rock in each shoe! Hurt at first, but after two weeks I could walk pain free! For regular street shoes I've had good luck with New Balance and Aisics having enough depth for my inserts. My dress shoes though dont work so if anyone has a good THIN yet strong arch insert please let me know!!

I'm glad to hear the information that you both give. So many times people say you need to break in your shoes which I never believed. And your feet are very important, looks without good functionality are no longer great shoes I believe. This thinking needs to continue in order to help other people understand how connected the body is.😊👟

I've always been told that I had flat feet (and they even look a bit flat), but this test indicates otherwise. Incidentally, I've never bothered with arch support and now I know why it hasn't caused any issues - I don't have flat feet. Thanks, B&B! An excellent empirical test.

I am a 55 yr. old woman with flat feet. I have worn athletic shoes for most of my life. I tried wearing Birkenstock shoes to help with my developing foot pain, but that only seemed to weaken my feet further. Recently, I have become a convert to barefoot shoes, toe spacers and foot exercises. Today I also learned the importance of training the gluts aß well to help balence the overall support system ratio of the ankles, knees and hips. For me, the pain in my back, knees and feet has become so much better, that I can not imagine ever, going back to traditional shoes. No more arch supports, narrow toe boxes or thick, stiff soles for me.

I started going to Menards and buying a roll or 12"sheets of Cork. Cut it out just like trimming an insole, layer it as thick as possible possible in your boot and after a day or two, it'll start to form to your foot and give you support where you need it. Works for me at least. Super comfy too

My feet are totally flat now. I was suffering terrible pain in my feet for over 10 yrs. It was like having electric shocks. It made target archery very painful to do. I didn't connect that I had became gluten intolerant around the same time as the pain had begun. I was probably gluten intolerant all my life but as an adult you tend to eat more carb based foods. I gave up gluten and besides all the usual gluten induced problems disappearing the pain in my feet disappeared. So I done some research online and came across a scientific paper on Gluten and tendons. Apparently gluten in people like myself who are sensitive to it, it can attack the tendons etc in the feet and other joints. Making walking very painful. The only shoes which gave me a little relief was to wear barefoot trainers. It's basically a very thin shoe which fits your feet like a glove. You're walking barefooted really. The pain was terrible.

Good video, thank you. I've always had problems with very flat feet and wore Brooks Motion Control shoes for a few years. They were okay, but not great. Then I switched to minimalist zero drop shoes, and it changed my life. First I stared wearing Altra Zero Drop shoes, and they were great. Unfortunately, they increased the stack height on most of their models, to a minimum of 22mm; thus, they were no longer minimalist shoes. Then I changes to Xero shoes. They are the best ever.

I been hearing that all we need is a minimal or barefoot shoe and allow our feet do the work. I don't have flat feet and I always buy the best shoe and I am in my late forties with stiff and tired knees and sometimes my lower back will hurt when I run. I am sick and tired people telling me it's age related or it's hereditary or it's somehow my fault. "We all gonna have problems" . Tell me, has anyone ever heard about indigenous third-world people have foot pains, bad knees , and other arthritis issues due to not wearing a Western standard shoe with all the science in them?

I have a bit of flat feet, and so far it's Asics shoes that feel best. They were the only ones I could find that have actual curvature in the insole below the arch. All the others: Nike, Adidas, Reebok, etc, all have flat insoles! But they didn't make them always like this, I actually have a pair of Reeboks from 25 years ago, and they do have curved insoles! Well, not anymore...So this is what "modern" running shoes are....

And she'd been working a similar job for 15 years! Wearing it like a badge of honour. Anyway she recommended me shoes with proper arch support. I find I can run and stand on them longer without discomfort or pain, although it doesn't remove the problem entirely.

I know at the very least I have a low arch, if not flat feet that I was born with. I could always tell something was different because my feet would always start hurting way faster than anyone elses when I was a kid (it's gotten a bit better over time) and since I've been getting more active lately, I was thinking that maybe I should look into different shoes even though the ones I have now are actually perfectly comfortable and it's probably just the 13,000 steps -- a bit over _5 miles_ -- I did today, lol. At the very least I'll keep this information in mind when it comes time to get new shoes again.

I was one of those patients whose ankle pronated to the floor. I also had severe tibialis tendinitis. The pain was so bad I could only walk on the outer side of that foot. I ended up with a calcaneal osteotomy to rebuild the arch. Unfortunately my orthopedic surgeon never once recommended post surgical PT much less orthotics to keep my arch working right. About a year later though, my chiropractor fitted me for custom orthotics. I wear them constantly with good quality footwear like in this video. My feet feel great 9 years later.

I currently wear inner soles to help my arch. If I bought these motion control trainers would I still need an inner sole? Also, I’ve heard great things about an American company called “Good Feet” anyone know of a UK equivalent recommendation?

I have had flat feet since birth I’ve found Altra and Topo shoes to be very effective. They aren’t cheap but way better than New Balance in regards to support and comfort. ASICS are just too hard and stiff for me unless I use their $160+ shoes...no thanks.

I am 21 years old. I always workout. Trying to stay in safe for the Marine corps boot camp or fire academy ( which ever comes first. Military is taking for ever). Mostly everyday. Just last week while running my whole calf on both legs started to hurt and get tight while running. Next day went running same thing . And the next. So i stopped running for a bout a week. Today i workout . Then when i started to do air squats; under my foot started to cramp up. I know i have flat feet. I’ve been using some Reebok cross fit shoes. I guess it’s time to invest into other shoe. I am in good shape but with this foot and calf pain i get during workouts. Makes me not want to workout.

Look into minimalist shoes! I am also flat footed but a few months ago I got some minimalist shoes. I have a pair of Lems Primal 2 and Vivobarefoot Primus Lites. I lift weights in my Vivobarefoots (basic compound lifts, squat, bench, OHP, deadlift, rows), and I can feel my feet muscles engaging WAY more in them, especially when squatting and deadlifting. Try it out!

I have flat-ish feet and personally have gone the complete opposite way to this, most footwear don't have a wide enough toe box to allow the big toe to support the arch properly. Some minimalist and barefoot shoes do allow more space in the toe box which helps your foot to support itself naturally. In theory all these motion control and arch support shoes help with is weakening your foot muscles. I don't want to be wearing support shoes/slippers around the house, I see my grandparents with flat feet struggle at home with balance because they wear rock like slippers with 'arch support'. I refuse to believe that after billions of years of evolution, a huge portion of the population are born with defective feet that need to be encased in shoes like solid rock. I haven't been wearing barefoot shoes for too long yet but I feel better in them, I used to get very sore arches and feel like I was getting shin splints after being in shoes all day but that stopped after I switched to minimalist shoes. I don't know if it's for everyone, especially older people or people with flatter feet than me but I would say test the waters out a bit, if you can walk around at home barefoot it shouldn't be too much of a jump, just be conscious if you personally can avoid that inward rotation of the ankle. Start easy if you choose to transition.

@@MustardseedFaithGrows I'm from Poland. My English is not very good. I use google translator. Can you look at the English forums what are the opinions about HyProCure implants? And then write here? I have read Polish forums and opinions about HyProCure implant surgery are very good! People write that it changed their quality of life. But in Poland treatments are not performed by too many specialists, only 3. Therefore, there are not many opinions. I think there are many more opinions in American forums.

If you are trying to control overpronation with motion control running shoes you should instead look at a good supportive tennis shoe instead. Running shoes are optimized for controlling forward motion, not lateral motion. Tennis shoes provide more lateral support than the best running motion control shoe IMHO (I've used both types). In addition, some tennis shoes, like the K-Swiss Hypercourt Supreme have a bootie construction. This additional ankle support further adds to the overall lateral support of the shoe.
