We take a look at the new 24v Flex hammer drill driver with TURBO. Using a 24v battery platform and turbo feature it should have the ultimate power right? Stay tuned to find out. Flex is fairly new to market and currently exclusively sold at lowes.
Over all the tools performs great and as expected. Turbo function is a bit gimmicky bc it's not always available to use. Seems certain thresholds need to be met in order to have the function enabled and it's not determined by the charge of the battery.
Otherwise great tool none the less.
The FLEX 24V Brushless 1/2-in 2-Speed Hammer Drill with Turbo Mode delivers 1,400 in-lbs torque. This unrivaled power is matched with tough construction for ultimate durability. Integrated LED lighting keeps you on the mark. Built-in anti-kickback feature lets you work confidently. This drill's exceptional runtime is backed by the FLEX Advantage of unmatched battery power, runtime and charging speed, making this turbo hammer drill unstoppable. All protected by a dependable 5-year warranty.
THE FLEX ADVANTAGE - 20% more power with 24V lithium, 25% longer runtime with THERMA-TECH heat management, up to 50% faster charging with high-power, dual fan chargers
SENSOR-FREE BRUSHLESS MOTOR - Every FLEX 24V tool is built around an intelligent Sensor-Free brushless motor - his improves durability, efficiency and control while reducing overall tool size
TURBO MODE - Increased speed for faster results
UNRIVALED TORQUE - 1,400 in-Ibs of torque

The sensor free (or sensorless brushless motor) is not marketing hype, it's a designed based BLDC motor. The main advantage of this design when the motor is running at high speed, it gets its full potential and efficient. However, the drawback is that it's not efficient at low speed application. Sensor -BLDC's are heavily used in drones low speed application and precise position of the motor is needed.

Great review man. You pointed out something that no other reviewer has pointed out. The turbo function only increases the speed and does not increase the power/torque. Seems a bit sad that when the tool heats up it can no longer use turbo. Seems to be one of the top flagship tools that is still using a manual clutch.

I am a carpenter and I use this drill in the real world not just a test bed and yes in extreme heat the turbo defaults to high speed to save the motor. I think Flex is over cautious but in the real world we don't used the drill driver like that. Name me a job where the drill driver has to work like that? Secondly speed and torque are simple 2 different things, when the ijob requires high torque like drilling into steel the driver is placed on the lowest mode to attain the highest torque and if speed is required then it is the opposite engagement. The truth be told we use this drill driver with the 2.5 amp battery even though it comes with a 5 amp battery and it is a monster beast. Not sure why anyone would use a 5 amp battery even though it is sold with it or use 8 amp hour battery

@@rickyperkins232 Running structural wire for acoustic is very demanding, and only a handful of models can hold up to moderate amounts of that. The Flex Turbo isn't one of them, seeing as thermal issues seems to be pretty common with them whenever they see moderately hard workloads. Sparkies also need to do drill dozens of holes through framing on any wood job, and through metal in some circumstances. Yeah, they *could* buy and drag around a Hole Hawg, Super Hawg, or the Makita/DeWalt equivalents, but why would they when a regular Makita, DeWalt, or Milwaukee drill can go all day and fit where they're needed 95% of the time? Hell, I've had a one off remodel job where I had to drill just shy of 20 1" holes though 3 layers of LVL beams, which is still more than what many (honest) reviewers did to get the Flex to over heat.

I'm a electrian and drill every hole through every stud when I walk in the door an do it in top speed with turbo mode not once has mine stop and I can't drill these holes with any other drill in in top speed I've owned everything even a holehawg fuel model drill if you want to know what tools to buy there's tons of people testing the turbo drill and it's numbers are all you have to see to know it's the best drill on the Market foot lb. Of torque flex turbo drill wins speed wins turns faster than anything else on the market before you hit the turbo button the final point I will point out is your tolls stop spinning do you hold down the trigger for another 15 seconds letting the motor hum Because the only time I've seen a test from a trusted source torque test channel is when I seen a flex tool lock up . Use the turbo drill to drill a 2 1/2 in holes in top speed turbo running that's about 700 rpms faster than any Drills you can buy and most won't do it in high speed to begin with so shif to first speed on everything else and your between 550 and 1000 rpm and the don't put the flex turbo turbo it's still turning 200 more rpms than anything else look at the stats 2200 high speed without turbo 2700 with it doesn't increase the torque but it's like a diesel with turbo it doesn't reduce the torque it does increase hp it's got more torque than anything else period I've not seen one negative review of actually tool use that I'm not doing on the regular without any trouble

@@tonywalls7991 Most trust worthy sources have had thermal issues with the turbo drill and impact with sustain loads. Something I've seen with drill brushes. It's even gotten to a point where a reviewer's trustworthiness can be accurately gauged by their flex reviews. Also, the marginal, circumstancial performance improvement over the Milwaukee 2804 isn't worth the bad ergonomics on the drill or impact either. Oh, and running at a higher RPM using turbo does incur a torque loss. Electric motors drop torque as they increase RPM. It's also certainly not the highest torque drill on the market, the DV36DAG, DCD998/999, GPH01, GAD01, XAD03, and Hole/Super Hawgs are all higher torque drills. And the real kicker, if you're referencing the reviews on Flex's site or anywhere online with the 'pulled from Flex's site' disclaimer, those mean nothing, they aren't trust worthy. Firstly, abuse of the rating systems by both resellers and manufacturers has rendered that information unreliable at best, and we've seen from Flex's marketing that they have zero issues lying and cherry picking to hell, that's it's a reasonable assumption to assume they'd abuse their own rating system. Second, Flex tools are largely sitting on shelves, collecting dust. Part of that is consumers seeing through the bullshit. Part of that is that word for mouth on Flex's tools is not that good. I've ran into an electrician running a Flex drill. He said that he's probably doing to return it and but something lighter because the small power bump isn't worth the weight when he's constantly using it over head.

That’s just how physics work my man, the hotter something gets the less performance it can output, the more raw dog power something it has the more heat it accumulates. The turbo is a great feature but it’s impossible to increase speed and torque unless you were to cap the engine lower than it’s rated torque and unlock it with turbo. Basically the turbo button is capitalizing on that great torque it has at the cost of heat which after enough heat builds up will diminish the torque so while your still drilling fast your power is being reduced. The flex tools are an amazing lineup I use them everyday and to be honest I push them hard and they take it. Ran the impact drill to the point it was boiling and spitting oil, doing tasks no other impact could do, afterward it was significantly diminished on torque, after I let it cool though it suffered no damage and put that full torque right back out again. By the way the task I was using it for was driving retaining lags for a tree house, these suckers are huge and going into a tree trunk. Using these tools for everyday work they outperform literally everything in power and runtime, plus the quick charging is nice and hardly ever used. All I can say is give ehm a try if you don’t like them you can always get your money back upto 90 days at Lowes, but if you do like it and enjoy the performance like me register within the first 30 days and get them warrantied for life! Pass them on down to the kids!!

I had to bring in my 7 1/4" Sliding miter to Milwaukee for a fix because it is 1° off or the scale is 1° off in Beltsville MD and they checked out my Flex drill driver while there, they were very impressed. They said this is good for competition and hope Milwaukee makes a better product eventually.

I bought this on sale at Lowe's a couple days ago. I plan to use it for IT work and some masonry drilling (outdoor cameras). I went with Flex because I have a couple of their auto detailing tools, and they are more known for those (Flex 3401 is one of the most recommended for beginners to auto detailing). When I saw they had power tools, I just had to grab one. Good to know that it performs up there with Makita and DeWalt, two well known power tool brands, even when turbo wasn't working. I wasn't buying the drill for the turbo mode, so if anything, this review gave me a little more comfort that this drill can still perform. I feel like they have the potential to improve it is just power tools is a whole new market for them. Only time will tell. Great review!

thank you my friend. great review! so all else being equal... it is basically between the anti kickback on this flex, vs the better electronic clutch on the makita. depending which feature is more important. to really dumb it down and forgetting if a platforms bias etc. the flex one is significantly cheaper however. so you really do have to pay a premium for the exclusivity of that makita electronic clutch. it is pretty cool though

I have this drill and most carpenter don't use drills anymore because impact driver are much more efficient when compared but I have to say this drill driver with the 2.5 amp hour battery has out done all drill drivers. I use it in Turbo mode all the time and yes it will default to the highest settings when hot and in extreme conditions like in the test. Most drill driver will break if the driver is constantly drilling concrete but I have not had a job where I put it to a torture test. I broke the chuck last week, called Flex Friday and they are sending me a new one this week, we will see. The Pros: this drill driver is a monster beast the 2.5 amp hour battery on up. The Cons: This drill driver is heavy with the 5 amp hour battery and the turbo mode cuts off in extreme heat to save the motor.

I like the Flex concepts (as Ive said before), but I've made many a mistake buying new release items, or new brands that just came out. Time will tell as to what it can/can't do. For myself, durability, and longevity are the most important factor in a tool. I'd rather have a rough tool that lasts longer, than a smooth tool with great features that doesn't last, or has issues. So thanks again, as always, for giving the most in depth reviews out there today!

@@rickyperkins232 well you did good not going to Dewalt. They didn't just go downhill... they jumped off the cliff entirely! I am still Makita, but dumped most of my Dewalts, and went to Bosch. Bosch has really impressed me. I'm avoiding Flex because Chervon has great ideas, but horrible execution (See Skil). But for your sake, I hope Flex holds up for you.

@@carterscustomrods I had bad issues with Dewalt, when the went to yellow and black they made a 12 volt with a trigger guard that was literally braking the trigger finger on torque. DeWalt wouldn't fix that damn problem so we would cut off the guard with a hacksaw. Then the invented the T-handle driver which is bad for your hands now the entire industry followed. They practically invented the 14.4 volt by themself with a bad trigger that they would fix. Then they had the chuck problem that they would fix for $90.00 after 90 days. Then they started to lose carpenters going back to Mikita because every f%%#@ battery from the 12 volt to the 14.4 volt to the 18 volt was a different fitting and wouldn't interchange. The 36 volt they pulled the line and left us hanging. Then they switch from the 36 volt to the current 18 volt. Let's see what happens with this 60 volt thing they area doing since they have the stack battery technology. I am done with DeWalt. Dewalt will drop a line if there in enough sale instead of low volume There's so many bad stories about DeWalt it is just unreal. The only thing DeWalt I have in my possession is a drywall driver kit and I just purchased the Flex drywall kit to replace it. I don't know much about Skills because carpenters don't use the brand at all. Bosch puts out an absolute awesome product but their lineup is limited too.

I believe that turbo mode would be good for drilling holes in thick metal, where you're not really pushing super hard , but just letting the drill bit do it's job. I don't think it's for auger holes back to back through 6x6's. Doubtful even sparkies would be drilling so quickly that it overheat running romex.
