I independently came up with the same idea.... One difference is that I use a smaller 2 conductor wire and instead of the zip ties I use heat shrink tubing to die the wire on the handle... Also, instead of frosting paint I use a little spritz of black spray paint top and bottom of the glass then some white spray paint to frost the rest of the glass... It gives a pretty convincing soot effect. Good job! Funny I also use the RCA power system which goes back pretty far the first person I recall seeing anything of it was was Rich Duprey (ghoulish cop) and then Derek at Van Oaks (DMinor Sound)...

Great minds think alike! Heat shrink tubing for the handle sounds like a clever modification. And your approach with the black and white spray paint to achieve a soot effect on the glass is a nice touch. Always happy to hear about different techniques! Definitely a big fan of the RCA lighting - it makes things so much easier for me. I think I picked it up from Derek (at least the idea of a RCA power supply box).

Thanks! I was really excited about how they turned out. Much brighter than the other LED lanterns I made. Tony thought it was real fire, so I’d say it’s a success! 😉

Hmm, ok I suppose. Not very realistic though, I feel these bulbs always overdo the flicker, and after a while they get on my nerves with the jerkiness, even using two bulbs. I have converted one myself and used a vintage glow style filament bulb which worked well for me,cos the wife likes it! All my others are used outside. Top up with paraffin,trim the wick, light and job done. Good effort and it's great seeing people upcycling without destroying these lights, but not for me.

I am looking for a led flame effect panel that I can wire to a small solar panel for sting lights, so I can have flame effect in a lantern and have it powered by an external solar panel. Where can I get the led fame effect panel that is already wired so I can attach it to the solar panel myself?

Although I've done many electrical crafts and projects around the house I'm not very electrically inclined. I'm currently trying to build a flicker unit using one of the flicker controls and a std LED, which I believe you used in a previous lantern. Not like this bulb style LED. I'm wondering if those can be powered along with something like this, using the same control box or will that cause problems having smaller LEDs and larger ones on same circuit? Thanks again. Remy

Thank you! I have bits and pieces in various videos, but nothing in one unfortunately. I mainly rely on a CCTV power supply box to supply 12V to RGB sign modules and spot lights. I also have two RCA power boxes I use for power to the pumpkins and some lights. I have an idea for weatherproof power/control boxes that I can spread throughout the haunt and use for multiple lighting options (including RGB light strips that I can control over WiFi). Not sure when I will get to that, but hopefully in the next few months.

Hey, man. Hooked up a couple of these in my lanterns. Look great. I'm curious: you had a link originally posted that I bought my initial bulbs from on this video. When I went back to buy more, there was a different link/different company. I ended up buying some G4s from Wal-Mart (they were cheap & local). I Hooked them up and they had a totally different light flicker sequence pattern than the ones you first listed in the link. I really loved the first lights you listed on the first link you had on this video. Any idea where I can get ones that are comprable? That have the same light sequence pattern?
@RestlessHollow

So, those I bought on Amazon but are no longer available. You can search for "flame led g4" and will find some, but they seem expensive. If you don't mind purchasing from eBay, they seem better priced. Example: ebay.us/gcfMwJ

Thank you for the great ideas and tutorials. This lantern will be a nice addition to my Halloween gear. One question, it appears the RCA that you connect to the end of this lantern is female while the jacks in the RCA box tutorial are also female. Am I missing something? Shouldn't there be a male connector in this system? Pardon the dumb question, but I'm looking on Ali Express to possibly order, but want to be sure I get the right connectors. Thanks again Remy
@RestlessHollow
@RestlessHollow Жыл бұрын
Good question! The reason they both have female connectors is because I use RCA cables to connect the lanterns to the power box. The cable has male connectors on each end. I like using premade RCA cables because you can get them in many different lengths and aren't usually too expensive.
@jeremydetevis2847
@jeremydetevis2847 Жыл бұрын
@@RestlessHollow I see. So your props all have standard length cords, but you typically use an RCA (extension) to connect to power rather than plugging the prop directly into the power source. Makes sense. Thanks for the quick response. I look fwd to seeing more of your videos in the future. Thanks again and have a great day. Remy

Awesome tutorial! These processes can seem so tedious, but the end product is always amazing. On the flicker bulbs you bought, are they all pulsing at the same rate? I got some on Amazon (a 2pk for $8), but sadly the flicker effect doesn't randomize. I've ordered some other ones from eBay, but I fear I'll be left with the same problem.
@RestlessHollow
@RestlessHollow 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The bulbs I bought pulse at the same rate also. I was definitely frustrated by that too. For whatever reason though, it looks better when using two of them together.
@OldBonesCreative
@OldBonesCreative 5 жыл бұрын
@@RestlessHollow I can see how having 2 of them in the same fixture would give it more of a "randomized" pattern even if they are pulsing at the same rate. I'll probably just end up mix-and-matching different models to get a more inconsistent flicker. Thanks for your response!
@OldBonesCreative

@@RestlessHollow So after some more purchases, I think I may have figured out a solution to this... Mix 2 different brands! I bought the G4 Flicker bulbs from Tento originally, which flicker a nice orange 1800k color. To try alternatives, I bought the Dayker brand as well (in both the 1800k and 2000k versions). The former flickers much slower than the latter, and I found that if you use both the Tento bulb and the Dayker 1800k bulb together, it creates a more convincing and random flicker. Two of the Dayker bulbs will even break sync much more frequently than two Tento bulbs.

Nice! That's good to know. Thanks for sharing this info. I will be making more of these in the future, so I will look for those bulbs.

Question: the LED bulbs in your video look yellow (which is what I want), but on the Amazon link, they look orange. Which would you say is more true?
@RestlessHollow
@RestlessHollow 3 жыл бұрын
The bulbs I ordered originally were no longer available, so I linked to different ones. I would imagine there may be variances on color with these. As a test, I compared one I have to an actual flame and the LED is definitely more orange. I wouldn't say it's pumpkin orange but more orange that a real flame. One option may be to add a yellow/gold flicker LED along with the flicker flame LEDs. No idea if that would work well or not though...

Question: I have a number of power supplies that range from 12v *170mA* to 12v *750mA*. Are any of those safe to use? And how many lights could be used on any of those? (I'm obviously quite illiterate in electronics😜).
@RestlessHollow
@RestlessHollow 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I totally missed your question. They are safe to use. The 170mA would power 1, maybe 2 I think, while the 750mA should be 4 or 5.

So, I ordered the sockets you posted the link to on Amazon. I bought them, received them (and the bulbs). I wired it up, inserted the bulb, plugged it in and "POP!". Blew the bulb. I noticed, rewatching your video the sockets are different than the ones Amazon sent me (the bag of sockets said "US-G4-Base-Blue"). Why do you think this happened?
@RestlessHollow
@RestlessHollow 3 жыл бұрын
Wow - that's crazy! Sorry to hear that. If they are G4 sockets, then it should be correct. What power supply did you use? Just wondering if it was outputting more than 12V? Could also be a defective bulb possibly.

@@RestlessHollow just hooked it uo to a pigtail (the plug of a cut off household extension cord) taped the connections & plugged it into a wall socket. Pop.
@RestlessHollow
@RestlessHollow 3 жыл бұрын
Okay, so the issue is the bulbs are low voltage. Max they can handle is 12V DC power. The household outlet is putting out 120V AC. You would need a 12V power supply.

@@RestlessHollow Okay. I'm not an electronics wiz. How do I do that?
