How to build, bright, high-quality flickering LED lanterns!
When I was young I went to Disney World and while I enjoyed the park, it was the lighting fixture and effects that really captivated my interest. In particular I loved the flickering lanterns that festooned the tree in the waiting area for Splash Mountain. For years I've wanted to hang lanterns from the tree in my front yard to match what I saw at Disney World and I've finally managed to perfect an imitation kerosene flame effect!

Note: The bulbs I used are no longer available, the ones listed below work but you'll need to replace the 470 ohm resistor with something closer to 3.3 K ohms. Experiment with resistor values to get the flicker that you want.

I cheated and made the LED just a _little_ bit more yellow that the kerosene flame, everybody chooses the wrong lamp!

Very clear explanation and nice execution. I was trying this same effect. To drive a brighter LED from the usual 4.5V Flickering LED. Have you tried using a Mosfet ?. I used a IRLZ44N L level N channel Mosfet to drive a 12V LED strip taking the source from the flickering LED through the Mosfet to act as a fast switching gate. And then wrap the LED strip in a spiral inside a lantern. It did work, but varying the flickering intensity was something that I just learnt today. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Thanks! I think the regular transistor makes a softer more natural flicker since it a more linear device than the FET. I like the idea of a strip wrap in the lantern!

Cool build, and very clear explanations. Within a few seconds of looking at those two lamps in the beginning, I formed an opinion of which was which. My opinion was still the same by the end of the video. In fact it didn't change at all, until you blew out the kerosene lamp.

Hi Jake, Thanks for an excellent and detailed video. I want to make something more powerful to attract moths. (Lepidoptery). I will use a 12v car battery and want it to be as bright as possible. Like a standard 110v Mercury lamp. They are intensely bright. I've tried before but never managed to increase brightness without either popping the flicker led or the transistor. Limited electronics knowledge here, but I really would like to make this work. Any advice greatly appreciated. With regards. Don.

I am looking for a led flame effect panel that I can wire to a small solar panel for sting lights, so I can have flame effect in a lantern and have it powered by an external solar panel. Where can I get the led fame effect panel that is already wired so I can attach it to the solar panel myself?
