This tutorial goes through the set up and operation of the Garmin GNS 430/530 for a typical IFR flight. You can use these techniques the next time you're in the cockpit. Check out IFR ground school at www.flight-ins...

In ten minutes this man taught me more than the Garmin POH could. Aviation manuals have the flare and intrigue of a senate bill.

I need to learn way more about my 430w. The instructor would always plug in the IFR points for me, bad idea imo. I feel that every single student should see it performed a few times and then they do it after that with the instructor picking up the missed steps until the student gets it.

Tell him so. My CFII did the same until I said leave everything for me as this raring certifies me for single pilot operation.

yea but we’re so bored :( I have to consciously restrain myself from touching radios while teaching. it’s tough!

You found yourself an hour building instructor. Get another one if you can.

I bought X-Plane sim and invested in the Honeycomb yoke and throttle quadrant. Then RealSimGear has a 430/530 you can connect. Its a good investment because learning it all in the plane is difficult and expensive. Especially more expensive if your instructor works the all the buttons for you and you don't build that buttonology.

Good Instructors know how to fly AND know how to teach. Sadly some are good pilots but are not good at teaching. Find one who can do both. I give my students EXERCISES and SCENARIOS and let them jump in and do it themselves with guidance.

One thing is for sure, I'm only using about 10% of the functions of the GNS 530/430 when I fly, so I gotta get better at this. Thanks for the clear instructions.

These avionics are great but it is a shame they will not load airways. I think the 650/750 was an improvement that allowed that feature.

I'd use X-Plane for training. Though the system quality is just barely inferior (mostly the gns considering they couldn't even get licenses for the name garmin), the physics are amazing

I have both Xplane and MSFS and whenever I use MSFS I end up spending way more time in the settings menu than flying.

Is there a video that includes holds using the 430/530??

just wondering what your flight sim setup is? Im doing instrument training and am considering getting back into MSFS. Any recs?
@stunna20089 ай бұрын
Off topic but as a current instrument student, I prefer xplane 12 way more than MSFS. Even the movement of the CDI needle is so unrealistic in MSFS. It makes it so annoying for me to have practice VOR stuff.

At around minute 9:45 the FERKO leg is activated. Why not use direct to instead of leg activation? Is there a difference?

In the initial setup how do you change the CDI from VLOC to GPS? When I hit NAV on my FPS it doesn't work

The CDI button.

I am new to sim. I am a ppl learning ifr. That why Im getting into Sim. I have Xplane. What sim are you using? My 430 on xplane lacks a lot of real world fuctionality?

@5:08 VOR1 is the top "compass." When you switch from C to V, the centerline jumps right. You twist OBS to re-center it. Visually I can follow along but I don't understand what's happening. Would someone mind ELI5? Seriously, like I'm five. Thanks
@snowshoe32745 ай бұрын
If you haven’t done it already, go watch a video on VOR Navigation. It’s not complicated, but you need the basics of radio navigation to understand the CDI.

Yeah I struggle doing this VFR with zero workload. I can only imagine having to do this in IMC when things are going wrong. What a great way to kill yourself in an airplane. We talk about dangers of distraction, but this is ok to do?..
@TakeNoneForTheTeam9 ай бұрын
I'll mention that I have probably flown 60-80 hours with a g1000 in MSFS and I have zero access to one in real life. At first I would hit pause and spend 20 minutes struggling. In real life I'd be upside down. Now it's so simple. The controls, buttons, 'look' of the unit when something's wrong, etc are all a thing of the past. I can only imagine 100 more hours of experience. I'm currently building the g1000 using heli mech's g1000 build video. Probably outside 99% of peoples' wheel house, but to me it's fun. I hope to further improve. And the g1000 is extremely similar to this video, only a lot more functionality and instrumentation. But it translates extremely well. Keep practicing and it will improve your in-flight smoothness to distraction ratio.

@@TakeNoneForTheTeam Agree. My G1000 journey was the same. Now it's second nature.
