You’ve invested in Flo by Moen Water Leak Detection and monitoring system to protect you home, cottage or cabin and now you need to know how to install it. In this video I’ll show you what you need and explain how to complete the installation right now!
You’re going to need to have a smart phone, you’ll need to have the Flo by Moen app installed and setup on that phone.
You’ll need power as well as wifi. You’ll also need some plumbing tools to cut the pipe, attach the fittings which can vary based on the type of plumbing you have and that’s pretty much it!
1) Pair the smartphone to your Flo device, be sure the Flo device can be paired in the install location. When plugging in, be sure to firmly insert the power cord.
2) The unit will be installed on the main water supply to the home before water splits into hot and cold but after water meter, water shutoff and pressure regulator. It’s important to make sure Flo is installed before any filtration system, outside faucet or water heater. You can exclude irrigation system.
3) There needs to be a power supply within 20 feet of the installation location.
4) Shut off water to home, and release pressure by opening several faucets in the home to drain as much water as possible.
5) Determine the exact install location keeping in mind that Flo can be installed vertically or horizontally.
6) Cut the pipe, catch and drain water the remaining water from the household plumbing.
7) Install the fittings using the spacer as a guide to help install the fitting to the length of the Flo device.
8) Wrap Teflon tape around the threads and install the fittings.
9) Install the device, after making sure the o rings are installed and lubricated. Make sure that the arrow is in the direction of water flow.
10) Hand tighten the plastic nuts and then add ¼ turn being careful not to over tighten.
11) Slowly open the water supply and check for leaks. Turn off the water flow at all of your plumbing fixtures.
12) Plug in the power cord making sure it seats properly. Make sure valve is in the open position.
13) Open app and check operation. Note that it takes about 10 days for Flo to learn your water usage habits, until then the system is not protecting your home fully.

I just purchased a home, and I change the hot water tank, went from a 40 to a 50 gallon, and the experienced plumber fitted the "Flo by Moen" I like because it allows for me to gauges my water usage.

Great info! Can this unit be installed on a 1 inch PEX B?

The fittings are made for copper so you would need to switch drom copper to PEX. There is a 3/4" and 1" version, be sure you get the 1"

LOL the spacer is for a new construction applications. You take it out of the box and give it to the plumber to have it installed where Flo will be installed later on. After the house is finished all fixtures operating system flushed from the debris/impurities left from comstruction (dirt fom pipes, flux from soldering pipes etc) then your plumber unscrews the unions and installs the Flo in place. Otherwise whats the point? To set the distance you can use the Flo itself instead of the extra piece of plastic :) PS I like your vidoes!Keep up the good work! Im not being sarcastic.

Thanks, Gary. I'm looking to install this in a rental unit, but it seems it will require collaboration with the tenant's to access their wifi system. Also, you don't use any dope on the fittings. Is there a reason for that, or was it just an assembly demo? This was very helpful.

I'm about to install a Flo valve in my home. What kind of grease should I use on the connection O-rings? I want to be sure I don't use the wrong type of grease and ruin them.

Does this replace the PRV valve? Or am I going to need to keep the PRV valve that already exists in my house?

It would be nice if Moen just gave you a dimension of pipe to cut out. Would you recommend a food grade silicone on rubber O-rings? Can you use this w/o the sensors?

Yes, you can use food grade silicone. yes, the one in my house has no external sensors.

Hello, Can the Flo be installed outdoors ? I'm in Florida and our main water line enters stucco/concrete block and then directly into concrete foundation. No means to access the main water line, indoors, unless I dig up the tile/concrete floor. The outdoors main line has about 12" from the turn off valve to the exterior house wall. Thanks in advance.

So quick question can u install this on the cold water line right before it enters the water heater my main water line is under my house so I’m looking for a better place to install this device

The Flo must be connect AFTER water treatment systems, NOT BEFORE - per Moen tech support. The Flo must be the last device before going into the home. Operation of water treatment equipment and regeneration cycles would cause aberrant readings by the Flo if connected after the Flo.

You can put it before the system as I did at my house you just need to let it learn that they backwash or contact FLO so they can set compensation for those times.

@@GarytheWaterGuy If your water contains heavy iron and minerals like mine, your Flo device may not last too long if you put it before your treatment system.

I have 2 inch pvc pipes. Can I use a coupler to size it right on the FLO side? 2 inch to 3/4 inch.

Yes, but are you sure your plumbing after the oressure tank is 2"? that is very large for a house.

Yes it's 1 1/2 or 2 ". I live out in the country and have great water pressure. will installing this make my pressure go down? Also why is the 1.25" $300 more? Does it have a more powerful motor? Bigger pipe, more pressure.

@@bif90210 yes, before the pressure tank but it can't be 1 1/2" through your hot water tank and to your fixtures. At what point does it go down in size and to what size? The 1" model just is larger to accomodate 1" flow through out.

Hi Gary, yes I just confirmed coming from road into house is 1.25 " and when it hits the water heater looks like it's just short of 1". So do you think It would be smarter to buy the 1" version and just use adapters and save $250? or will have have pressure problems? Thank You.
