this is a great idea executed completely flawful.... no measure tape, no compass, just find it, throw it down and hope!

Also, do I run the scrap wood beams right on top op the floor joists? Or would it be stronger to do the perpendicular

I find it much better to rip 2 x ( 0" to 2-1/2) then lay down osb on that.
@petestreet75354 жыл бұрын
This is merely cosmetic. You have to address the supports down to the foundation.

I plan on ripping treated 2x4 in half as my furring and shimming with pieces of broken ceramic floor tiles to stop humidity from the floor ....

@bl1tzkr1egbob I used 3/4" osb. If I were going to do hardwood, I would probably have used plywood

Doug that's bullshit it would cost way over 1000 just to do one room like your talking and a house that is over a hundred years old you could cause the whole house to fall this way you can fix the floor for about 300 bucks if the room is around 15x15 and it will hold all the weight you want to put on it I've done it to my house

be nice to mention the type of level you use; four foot? or laser?

What would you think about using 3 tab roofing shingles instead of scrap lumber to shim the floor to become level?
@loadi28658 жыл бұрын
Grab a hammer and break a few ceramic floor tiles in pieces big enough for shims...they will never deteorate...
@JaySmith-ly4iv7 жыл бұрын
Roofing shingles can emit toxic gases into your living spaces. If your use of them is sparse, then the danger would be negligible and relatively safe.
@robertfranks39346 жыл бұрын
Jay Smith yeah shingle won't work they will let your joists sink into the shingle

I have considered your proposal and have concerns about ceramic tiles breaking under uneven pressure from heavy objects being placed in unfortunate areas after the fact.
@silver606185 жыл бұрын
dumbest comment ever. tile will break like glass and make noise just the same

Wouldn't self leveler be easier?
@JaySmith-ly4iv7 жыл бұрын
Self leveler would not work with a discrepancy of 2 inches. The drying process alone would take forever and be subject to shrinkage.
@ChikaCheeks7 жыл бұрын
Jay Smith what if u add gravel to it. Allow drying for 24hr

you just lost square footage... this wouldn't support anyone heavy, nor anything heavy. I would be upset to see this under the carpet of a home I was looking to buy, or bought. The price in doing this, to every room, windows, doors, you are better off doing it right and setting the foundation back to level.. With airbags and new tech, it's now cheaper to fix foundation issues, then to be stuck doing this job over and over. .
@JaySmith-ly4iv7 жыл бұрын
In a house this old, the foundation would most likely be stacked stone. Current code would not allow this to be set back to level without replacing the basement wall with cinderblock or cement. The cost effectiveness is lost when this is factored in. The solution in this video is viable and permanent as long as the material used is placed over the original floor joists, and glued and screwed. The only problem with lost space will occur with the inconsistency of the height of the walls. A "settled" foundation is far sturdier, than one that has been replaced, and yet to "settle", with everything being equal.

fixing the foundation would be more costly and wouldn't promise you anything in the long run. The best fix is always to start new but its not always the cheapest or easiest.
@Tom817485 жыл бұрын
You don't do it in every room, only where it's about an inch or worse difference between the highest and lowest points, that's the most cost effective and easy way to fix that gap. Many contractors do it and the home owners are not even aware of it.
