This is how I play with my Syrian hamster, Mia. Every night I get my tea and sit down and hang out with her during her floor time. It’s how I decompress from the day. This video shows a bit of our routine and her bin cage that I made from a holiday tree storage bin a few years ago. It’s from the Container Store and I’m not sure if they still sell it. I made her a platform similar to my faux rock walls. I made it to encourage her to dig burrows under it. The first set up I had for her had a lot of bedding on one side but she never burrowed in it. She would only make nests behind her wheel. It took her a while to start burrowing under her platform but now she’s an expert. She has a maze of burrows under it. The platform prevents her toys from sinking and disappearing into the bedding. Her playpen is a partitioned part of the room. Every night she runs around and wears herself out. I wait until she’s ready to go back in. I have never had to put her back in. She goes when she’s good and ready.
She has some thinning fur spots where her scent gland is on one of her hips and one small spot near her tail. I never see her scratching herself but I do see her marking things a lot with her scent glands so I’m not too concerned about it. I suspect it’s something hormonal.
