I finally finished my hamsters wire wheel after a few hours but now when he runs on it he now and again spins out of control. I hope he’ll get used to it. He seems faster so I guess it’s not sore on his feet. I also discovered I’m slightly allergic to sisal twine. 😂 I broke out in a few hives on my right hand and left arm while messing with it. I’ve been getting hives for days though but never so many in one day.

Thank you for this idea! I ended up buying 10 hard cover binders though and separating them from the strip that had the 3 rings which gave me 20 panels to use. I only had to tape the 1 edge from each 'panel' where I cut them and then tape them together. Tip: when taping the panels together, leave a tiny gap in between so they're easy to fold up when you put it away. 😇

The hard cover binders sound like a great substitute for the glass. I used glass because it was heavy enough to stop my hamsters from nudging it up to slip under it. I originally had a foam core wall that I had to weigh down by draping books over it. My Syrian hamsters are the ones to really keep an eye on because they seem to love the challenge of any wall any where 😆

Yes. I would weave the sisal through the wire bars the other direction so it goes in the direction the hamster runs. It will look more like a basket. 🙂

I never had any of my hamsters pee on these but they did chew which makes it a fun chew toy as well. This diy worked well for me when I used it on its side as a wall. I made an extra long ones to use as retaining walls so I could build up and hold back the bedding. The rolled rolls are flexible so there's no risk of hamsters getting legs stuck in-between them like rigid wood ones. The best thing about this diy is how inexpensive it is. If it gets chewed or peed on you can replace the damaged parts very easily. Just pull off the damaged rolls, add on new ones to the end, and slide them down the wire 🙂

I'd love some advice! Im going to make a bin cage. I plan to make a huge cut out window on the lid on top. But i was wondering if it's safe to make small drill holes on the sides. Do you think this could be potentially dangerous?

I wouldn’t drill holes on the sides because its not necessary and it could give your hamster a starting point to chew a larger hole to escape. I would keep it simple and just make an extra large cut out on the lid and attach hardware cloth. Nothing on the sides will help keep your hamster safe and give you peace of mind 🙂

Millet was kept in a DIY Iris Holiday Tree storage bin. I now use a DIY Ikea Linnmon cage that I doubled up. I have videos featuring both enclosures on my channel 🙂

I love this !!!! I have always used fleece for my other kinds of pets and I was so confused as to why we couldn't for these little guys too !!!! My hamsters loved this bedding. I used it for a couple of years. I use paper bedding now mostly for better odor control. The fleece can get a little stinky depending on the hamster so I make extra to change out when spot cleaning. Some people have concerns about blockage if ingested, but I never had a problem with it. I always tell people to test a small amount first and see how your hamster responds to it. If they chew it too much it then it should be removed. Contrary to what some people think it holds tunnels and burrows very well. My hamster always got excited about it when I introduced it to them. I'm sure yours will too 🙂

Thank you. I would have made a bigger one but at the time the price of materials was astronomical because of supply issues. The price of wood alone was ridiculous. I always liked Vanilla Ham Ham’s IKEA Linnmon cage, and because the IKEA cost of materials was so affordable I decided to modify her design. I’m content with the size because it’s tall enough to get 10” of bedding and still have room for everything at the surface for my hamster to enjoy. Each enclosure takes 6 bags of the largest packs of bedding you can buy to fill up just one of the enclosures. Each bag costs approx $20. The doors on the side is the best part about this cage. My hamsters love the side door. A playpen is a must, especially for a Syrian hamster. It doesn’t matter how large your enclosure may be, a Syrian will always want to get past any and every wall they see lol. The only changes I have made is I had to line the bottom and sides with tile to stop my Syrian from chewing through the wood. He managed to chew a hole in the bottom corner and was able to escape. He was able to get out and back in because it was low to the ground. I discovered the hole when I was cleaning and found wood bits on the floor. He was asleep in his burrow. He must of had a blast coming and going as he pleased for a few days lol. I felt bad fixing it. It may be possible to make this cage with larger IKEA materials. They have different sizes of table tops and glass tops that might work to expand the size. You may have to get glass custom cut to size elsewhere.

Spot cleaning has always worked for me and I would get the big bags of chips (safe kind) and that one bag would last the hamster's lifetime. Yes, I regularly spot cleaned. I also fully cleaned about once a month. You video won't work for mice though. And I can't spot clean for mice like I could with hamsters. Mice are cute but I'm not fond of having them as pets. Their pee smells and they don't pick corners. I know, you're probably thinking "Then why did you get mice?" I DIDN'T! 😮💨 Our maintenance worker brought over a baby house mouse that she got off a glue trap. Luna was around 2, 2 and a half weeks old. She asked me if I wanted to care for her because she didn't know what to do with her so I agreed. Once I knew she was female I bought her a cage mate. A white feeder mouse I named Molly. I would've preferred a fancy mouse but they didn't have any where I bought the 20 gallon tank on sell. But Molly didn't come alone. She brought mites! Yay! I was gonna return her but I would feel bad so I just treated them both with olive oil and dawn soap. I hope this helps because I don't have the money to take them to a vet or buy any medicine. Then (don't tell my mother!) I went into our basement and there was a live mouse on a glue trap. 😖 I hate those damn traps but it's not really my apartment. I have told her not to use them though. Me and my damn heart, I got her/him off the trap. Not sure if it ate the poison on the trap but we'll see. Now I have to try to clean the rest of the glue off without getting bit. It was so much easier with Luna when I had to clean it off her. She was tiny, tired and unable to fight back. She's still timid but I can hold her and pet her fine. I actually have a soft spot for her. The tiny little arsehole.😂

Aww, that’s so kind of you to help the mice. I made a humane mouse trap using a 5 gallon bucket from the hardware store. I cut a 2 inch hole in the center of lid and put peanut butter inside the bucket. I caught multiple mice in one day. They can’t get back out once they fall in because even though they can jump they can’t jump through the small hole. Rat poison should be banned because wildlife eat the poisoned rats and mice. Poisoned mice go outside looking for water and are easy prey. Glue traps catch wildlife as well. Wildlife rehabbers get animals stuck on glue traps brought to them all too often. Good to know that mice don’t pick places to pee. That makes it much harder to keep clean. Maybe a bioactive terrarium could work for mice? I know there are forums and videos on it. I’m sure someone has tried it already. I would be very interested to know if the olive oil works for the mites. I’ve heard that mayonnaise works to get rid of lice, but didn’t know about olive oil. Maybe you can take the mouse to a rehabber who can try to free her from the glue trap? I would be worried about being bit too. Not sure how to manage that. See if your mom would be willing to try the bucket trap instead of poison and glue traps. Be sure to check it everyday. You can release them in a group far enough away. Try to find where they’re getting in. Killing the mice won’t make much of a difference because new mice will take their place as long as they can get in the building. You can seal entry points with spray foam and steel wool. There are videos to show you how. I hope you can help the little mouse. I wish everyone had a kind heart like yours.

I think that they’re talking about uninterrupted floor space which is a recommended minimum of 775 sq inch or 5000 sq cm, according to the internet, currently. I can’t remember the size of these bins but each bin was extra large, the largest I could get at the time years ago. Levels or connected bins are fine as long as there is enough uninterrupted floor space on at least one level or bin. I have seen DIY connected bins criticized and discourage because of potential escape at points where hamsters can chew holes. This is an issue with wood cages as well. The only escape proof cage is a glass cage with a very secure lid. In my experience the biggest chewers and escape artists are Syrian hamsters. My dwarf hamsters have no interest in escaping. 🙂

Coconut oil will solidify so it will get gunky and probably sticky over time which will make the wheel slower. You can try it. It's safe to use. It should work for a while but probably get sticky and hard to clean off eventually. 🙂

I use one in the sink too lol 😆I was considering mice for the top enclosure 😀 It took me a long time because I was making it up as I went along. I also like to complicate things for myself like making custom brackets to hold the glass on. If I made another it wouldn't take as long because I know exactly what to do. The only thing I would do differently is ceramic tile the floor and sides to prevent chewing. My current Syrian hamster managed to chew his way out in the corner. He's in the bottom enclosure so he was able to come and go as he pleased for a few days before I discovered it lol 🤣 If hamsters can get back into their enclosures they will come back. I had to use a strong wood filler and then used sheets of glass to cover the bottom and sides. Overall I'm very happy with it. I wish it was bigger but I had to work with IKEA parts at the time so I was limited. I built it when the price of wood was at its highest.

Hi! Thank you so much for this video. Our nearest vet that trim hamster teeth is located over 2 hours from us. Last time we was there and trimmed our hamsters teeth he was so stressed by the long car ride that we can’t put him trough that again. Because of that, our plan was to euthanize our poor little guy next week due to this impossible situation we’re in. But this video gives us hope that maybe we can save our little fella. Thank you so much, I hope that I can learn to clip his teeth safely without any splitting❤️

I am so happy the video helped you and your little hammy! I’ve had 2 hamsters with teeth I had to clip. It wasn’t their favorite thing to do but they definitely appreciated it after. My little robo would immediately start chewing on everything. My Syrian would would ask for treats. I clipped their teeth every 2 weeks. It helps to have someone hold them while you clip but it can be done with one person. 🙂

Thank you very much Hammy Time. I actually made this for my hammys and it is such a great holding area during cage cleaning and playtime. And it was very affordable compared to other alternatives. Quick question though, do you have any trouble with the Velcro wanting to unstick on the back of the duct tape? I have that issue with mine but it's only when collapsing the play pen so I just restick it and it still works great.

I think I used the industrial strength velcro. Not sure, but mine is still staying in place. It could also be the duct tape surface. If it's super slick and smooth it could affect the adhesion. I've had projects where the velcro has come off. You can try cleaning the surface of the duct tape with a little rubbing alcohol to clean it for better adhesion. If that doesn't work then grommets eyelets could secure it, but you would need to put holes in it to place the grommets. I will have to think of ways to secure it better and let you know if I think of a solution. Thank you! 🙂

I made this bedding for a special needs hamster. She loved it so I used it for my other hamsters for a couple of years. I still have it incase I ever need it 🙂

Wow the cage and the setup techniques and things you made are so incredible and inspiring! I can't believe how talented you are for making all of this. This may be the best cage I have ever seen and I have seen a ton from several hamster youtubers. I'd really like to make a cage equal to yours but with 120cm x 60cm instead of 100cm x 60cm like you have. I don't have the fancy tools you do though...would you say it is possible for someone with just an electric screwdriver, drill and hand saw to make this without the circle openings on the side? It would be me and my partner doing this. Awesome work, you just gained a new subscriber!

Thank you! It is possible to do it with your tools. The IKEA table tops are hollow wood with corrugated cardboard filler, so a hand saw could work. Maybe use a saw guide, like clamping down a straight edge to help keep the saw straight. Thanks for subscribing! 🙂

I wrote the comment but then I noticed later on that you answered my question in the video haha I was making a 3D model of your cage and the measurements weren't adding up, I didn't have as much of a gap between the cages as you did. It was because you cut 10cm from the cage back panels and I didn't notice. Thank you for the tip on the saw! I'm planning what I need for the cage very carefully as I have 2 female Syrians and they are fussy with space. One is in a 100cm x 50cm cage and is bar biting and climbing. The other is in a 160cm x 80cm cage as is happy. I'm wanting to make this cage wider than yours because I'm afraid of making it the same size as you did and my youngest female still being unhappy. Do you think making it 120cm instead of 100cm in width will affect the stability of this build? I will make it taller as well, 160cm instead of 140cm like you have. This is so I can have 60cm of height for both cages instead of 50cm like you have and keep the 40cm of spacing between them. Thank you again for the awesome video!

@@dreamingwide Thanks for clarifying! I see comments disappear too often so I assumed that was the case. Yes! Making it bigger is awesome. The stability should be fine. I epoxied washers to help strengthen the hold where the table tops on the sides have no composite wood inside to screw into, which helps the stability. Making a 3D model is so smart! I need to do that. Sorry about my measurement error. It wouldn’t be a proper DIY from me if there wasn’t some screw up somewhere 😆 Now I will have to watch my video to see what you mean 😂 One reason I make these video is to document how I did something because I forget so quickly. I have to say that I’m very happy and satisfied with my cage build. Bigger would have been better so I’m sure yours will be a nice upgrade. Have fun with your build! I love how practical it is and I think it looks nice too. 🙂

@@HammyTime Hiya! I thought I'd give an update because there was a change of plans. We don't have the tools to cut and ordering from IKEA would be very expensive here (UK) with the shipping. Because of this, we got 2 gigantic sheets of Poplar Plywood from a local DIY store that had cutting service and asked them to cut them. The main difference is that the plywood is 1.2cm thick while yours is 3.4cm... We're hoping that will be enough since it is more robust than IKEA, it's just thinner. Do you think it will be strong enough?

This is a lifesaver! I had resorted to using off-brand command strips to stick the bottle to the side of her bin cage and sometimes when I woke up in the morning the bottle had fallen off and I had no clue how long she couldn't get to the water. I was starting to worry about her getting dehydrated but I'm so grateful for this tutorial! Thank you!

holy hamster exercise balls, that was a lot of work! I tried to make stuff out of corn husk once, but I didn't have much. I braided them. Reusing the chewed up millet sprays is a stroke of genius!

WOW! YOU ARE SO CREATIVE! It never fails to impress me!! When you showed these items in your last video, I was guessing they were made of corn husk. Haha, I was right! It's so creative how you thought of using corn husk! It's also cool that they're just tamale wrappers 🤣, would've never thought of that! And dang, using leftover millet sprays to make a tree?! Absolute genius! 🤯 I'll have to try making that sphagnum moss tree sometime. I've got all the materials for it. Everything in the video turned out beautifully! Just holy crap, you've got some serious skill and talent! It never ceases to amaze me! 😂

Very cute hamster. I ended up using the Niteangel Silent Spinner for my gerbils because they seem to chew everything and then pee on stuff...
