In this video we are tasting white sapote fruit for the first time. This wonderful selection of unknown varieties was purchased from Gen who owns a fruit grove in California. If you know the varieties featured, please leave a comment below!

Disclaimer: Taste is very personal and subjective, varies from person to person and culture to culture. Also, the same variety grown in different parts of Florida will taste differently depending on changes in microclimate, annual rainfall, soil health, mineral and salt content, fertigation regimen (irrigation+fertilization), etc. This video is intended to motivate friends who have never tried this wonderful fruit to go and try it for the first time and dance in awe and happiness.
Don’t make assumptions about a variety based on your tasting of a mediocre tasting fruit! Try fruit from different places, different microclimates at different stages of ripeness.

I'm so glad you discovered white sapote, Satya. It's a wonderful, delicious fruit. I've never tasted it in Florida, but years ago when I lived in Hollywood, CA, there were 30-ft. trees here and there in the neighborhood, and I would collect fallen fruit. Texture when ripe should be like custard. You can find various sizes and shapes of fruit from the same tree. I don't have a clue which varieties are best for SoFlo.

Yes John, we are glad too, the more we let them go on counter top the sweeter and creamier they became, now we are counting them until they finish. Need to get a seedling going and then will ask forum members for scions of some varieties that do well in Florida climate.

I just planted a redland white sapote here in Florida. I heard it was the best one to plant for Florida. Looking forward to trying the fruit.

We have not decided which variety to plant. Heard good things about Redland, Younghan's gold and Suebelle so we will see what is available. Most likely will just plant a seed and then graft 2-3 varieties onto it.

I wonder if anyone could tell us all the different varieties you tasted. I have a White Sapote tree, but don't know the variety and haven't had fruit yet. I agree on your comments about the other fruits. I love persimmons but was underwhelmed by Black Sapote.

Out of 4 one is Rainbow variety, other three are mystery. We left them longer on the counter top and they tasted sweeter and sweeter, and the texture more melting in the mouth...way less messy and more flavorful fruit compared to Black sapote in my opinion.

Would love to add one of these to my dooryard, what is the best tasting variety in your opinion?

We ordered a bog box from CA and liked them so much that we planted trees, from the box we ordered Rainbow was the best. Here in FL i heard the varieties that do good are Excalibur's Suebelle, Younghan's gold, Redlands, Bonita Springs and Super Sweet. I have a multi-grafted tree in ground now with these varieties.

David, the fruit was very sweet, not a hint of bitterness and very creamy, with thin skin. I guess different varieties ripen differently. I saw a chart online stating that only one Florida variety has "excellent" taste, whereas many California varieties have the same "excellent" characteristics.
