There are dozens of huge white Sapote trees on my block. I wondered who planted them, because several are in abandoned lots, so I did some investigating. To my surprise its the squirrels planting them! They take the fallen fruit from one yard to another, and bury it, thereby ensuring a constant source of their favorite food. Squirrels may have planted the first orchards thousands of years before Johnny Appleseed.

They sell them at Safeway here in the Bay Area. The seeds are really easy to sprout, I've got several seedlings going now.

I had lots of white sapotes at University of Hawaii at Manoa campus last summer. The fruits were raining down on me and I picked a bag full in a couple of minutes. They are so tasty!

I love white sapotes!! I've got two of the trees planted but it might be a few years before I get fruit.

Did you feel at all relaxed / sleepy? The ancient Nahuatl word for the fruit means "sleep sapote", and over the years there have been various (sometimes contradictory) reports about whether eating the fruit and/or seeds makes one sleepy. It may have to do with the cultivar. Eating any amount of the seeds is dangerous, as they can be deadly poisonous, but a sleep-inducing compound has been extracted from them, so there's probably at least some amount in the fruit as well. This fruit is really underappreciated. The tree grows like a weed and is a very heavy producer, as well as tolerating drought well. There's a lot of potential for its cultivation. Back in the early 20th century there was a push to make it a mass-market fruit, with fruit being marketed as far away as New York; nobody seems to know why it never really caught on. Perhaps transport / storage issues.

I used to have a white sapote tree in my backyard. Of all the fruit trees we had, it was the most reliable. I live in San Diego so it was happy here. After a particularly warm and humid summer, the sapotes would have that custard umami taste. Between this fruit tree and the loquat tree we had, it is a taste of summer I miss from my childhood. I agree, a sweet avocado is a perfect description.

Great review with many cultivars Jared. The ones we find here in Australia are often green when ripe, taste like a mixture of coconut, mango, avocado, pineapple and apricot. Quite delicious but not overly sweet 5 or 6/10).

Place a ripe suebelle in the refrigerator and it tastes like a soft serve vanilla ice-cream.

The fruit in the second half look exactly like Casimiroa Tetrameria #7(another species) I saw online. The fact that the fruit looks different and taste different too from the other I think confirm that. Ask Steven if the tree from that fruit has wooly leaves, that should confirm it.

I love your channel. I moved to SoCal from Wisconsin. It's USDA zone 10 here, I've never seen a frost and just about anything will grow here, so when I hear of a rare or obscure plant I might want to grow, this is the first place I go to see what it tastes like. I don't have a lot of space so I only want to plant things that will probably taste good. My house came with a bunch of citrus trees (Cara Cara orange is the best), but I've been adding mostly stuff that you can't get in the grocery store. So far I've planted Ice Cream, Red Dacca, and Goldfinger bananas. I just got a Razzmatazz grape and a couple peanut butter trees that I need to plant. I put some Ube and Tiger Nuts in containers. I don't think you've done a video on Ube, my Filipino step-father-in-law introduced me to that. Makes great ice cream. Oh, and a vine that the leaves are supposed to taste like a french cheese. Paederia Lanuginosa the common name is "La mo." I'm letting it grow a bit before eating a lot of the leaves, but I just tried one, and it does taste like a fancy cheese might taste. I'm also thinking of planting a mulberry and now maybe a white sapote. Maybe an Acerola cherry too, but I'll be running out of space pretty soon. Maybe some Mashua too when I find some.

My latino family mentioned this fruit "zapote blanco" so I just knew you would have a video on it. Glad to see this video

Jared, if it really is the comhination of those tropicals you mentioned ( mango, pineapple, coco, etc ), and 8/10 sweet: should it not be the best fruit in the world ? I get crazy to taste it soon !!

Were you in California during cherimoya season? California probably has the best cherimoyas you'll ever taste.

It's to bad they didn't have the varieties of the white Sapotes you were trying. Some of the varieties grown in the United States are: Homestead, McDill, Max Golden, Pike, Dade, Reinikie, Suebelle, and Smathers.

You should try Myrica rubra fruits, though it will be hard to get. They only have a shelf life of a few days.

Would you compare a white sapote to maybe a cherimoya or sapodilla? Like the flesh, sweetness, and taste of it? I just bought a white sapote tree and I have no idea what it tastes like, but I heard it's very sweet.

How would you compare this to pawpaw (Asimina triloba)? Based on the description of the last one, the flavor and texture sound similar though they aren't related at all. (Well, both angiosperms.)

Sweet avocado eh? Don't even know if we import these to Canada. When I go to Florida I will see if I can find them for a taste test, they look yummy.

Hi. What variety was that great -tasting one in the end?

I notice a lot of people don't eat the skin of the white sapote. Some can have a slightly bitter skin, but not so bad to where it's inedible and some aren't bitter at all. I find it's just easier to eat the fruit with the skin, but then again I eat the skin on most fruit people probably wouldn't.
