Here are Rodnina & Zaitsev skating one of their best early career performances, all done at break-neck speed and at altitude! Note the brilliant sbs double axels - possibly the best I ever saw them do.

Vivát!

Proficient at skating. Facial expression devoid of joy.

Rodnina didn't do joy. Gurning for the judges wasn't ever the purpose of their skating. It's a study in power and precision.

Clean four difficult lasso lifts (two on 1 hand, another with flip over), 3twist, 2A, 1A+2T+euler+2S, one-foot axel+2S, difficult entries (spiral into a death spiral) and variations (pair spin with lifts), ecc. This was the reasons of so high marks.

Thanks for the rational comment!!! Some people don’t seem to understand that this was four or five *major* rule changes ago-and difficult lifts, death spirals, and pair spins carried a lot more value than they do now and, by contrast, throw jumps weren’t valued very much. Everything this couple did well was a big point getter, which is why they were unbeatable. With the major rule change that went into effect in 1981, though, they picked the right time to retire, for sure.

These two were amazing but I did always find it interesting that they never attempted any throw jumps... no throw double axel or throw triple salchow, even though Irina was an incredible jumper...

@@carlajonas4508 but Rodnina never did even one throw throughout her entire career, including the 1980 Olympics when every team in the event did them! In 1980, a throw double axel was the norm and standard from the top teams. (And teams *were* doing throws in the early ‘70’s)
@nondescriptnyc
@nondescriptnyc 2 жыл бұрын
Let’s remember that it was an entirely different scoring system. Pairs were judged based on lifts, pair spins, speed, synchronization, and death spirals primarily, with SBS jumps and spins in sync being equally important. While North American and East German pairs were doing throw jumps relatively early in the game, they didn’t carry as much weight through the 1970s until a major rule change went into effect in 1981-and subsequently in 1983 (when the ISU finally limited the number of lifts a pair could perform in FS). The pendulum apparently swung too far to the other end, though, and, in 1989, the ISU actually ended up limiting the number of throws and twists a pair could perform in FS this time, encouraging pairs to focus more on lifts and other skills that had become neglected with too much focus on big throws and twists.

The figure skating included the last minute of Gross/ Kagelmann , The complete long of Melissa Militano and Johnny Johns as well as Rodnina/ Zaitsev The short programs of Dorothy Hamill and Toller Cranston. Last portion of Kermer/ Osterreich and ending with the last minute or so of Babilonia/ Gardner with the graphics running on the screen at the same time.

@@floskate When you watched, even without sound, how did the program appear to you? Because Rodnina wrote in her book "Rough Ice" "Tatiana got down to business with all her characteristic energy and passion, the music specially for the new compulsory short program was written by the composer Alexei Mazhukov, but this program was not successful with the public and specialists. We did not cope with it, we were unprepared either morally or musically."

@@Dossen_A I love any opportunity to watch R&Z. My impression is that they showed very fast and powerful skating covering loads of ice and doing elements cleanly. There is no room for musical interpretation other than through the elements in these early short programs because they are so short!

@@Dossen_A do you know the name of the music? Is it available anywhere?
@Dossen_A
@Dossen_A 3 жыл бұрын
@@floskate Unfortunately no. Rodnina only mentions the name of the composer. But we can assume that the program was choreographed in 1974, and Aleksey Mazhukov wrote instrumental music before that in 1973, which was published on this album. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hK1_YKiF16m7j58.html If Tarasova did not use one of these compositions, when we can have an idea of the style in which Mazhukov wrote music.
