I have wanted a ceramic grill for a long time. But alternatives in sweden are few and crap/or expensive. So i decided to make myself a DIY Kamado aka a Flower Pot Cooker

Great job, well done 👌👊🙂👍 You can possibly also add a lip to the perimeter of either the top lid or bottom dome to prevent the lid from sliding off like a small bracket.

Have you enquirer to see if their are any pottery classes or schools with art program close by who might also make you some pieces for extremely cheap? Also any reason you chose not to use the fire cement to further insulate bottom and ensure gaps in stones don’t get ash/suit toxins lodged in places you can’t reach to clean easily? Just super curious and also wondering now 2 years later how has it lasted?

Thank you Mike. This is the project i have been planning the longest. Going on two years now. Main problem has been i wanted the bottom part to be alrge enough to actually cook stuff, but didnt want the same put as a lid - it would be too heavy. So i have been looking dor a domed pot to use as a lid and found it this weekend, no more excuses i thought so off i went :) Got a rosette vent for the lid in the mail yesterday, and just need a bottom damper to arrive from germany and i can finish it. Will figure out a different solution to the charcoal basket as well to make it a bit easier to clean out, and lastly i need to put together a little cart so i can move it around withouth breaking my back lol. THanks for watching it :)

Thanks Simon, yes i would imagie i could. In my most recent video i have the vents mounted, but probably lit too many coals and let it get up in temp too much before i dampened it. So it ran at about 300. Next weekend i will do som e pulled pork or shredded beef to test a lower temp cook. I will only light a couple of coals to not overshoot. Great job Lasse, seen many designs I think your's is the best... Im gonna build one myself... a few qustions if you please: did you check the safety of the paint on these pots? and how important are the oven bricks? can I do without them? one other thing, some users said the pots cracked after a few cycles... did you encounter this issue? thanks a lot
@LassesFoodAndBarbecue
@LassesFoodAndBarbecue 3 жыл бұрын
Ofer Israel thank you! I read a lot and made sure thh pots was noncoated clay(terracota). Just to be sure there is norhing in a glaze that is unhealthy when heated. The firebricks in part help keep the heat steady, but i mainly got them to move the heat from direct contact with the pot, which also the stainless pot helps with. Hopefully this will minimize the risk of cracks developomg from extreme heat fluctuations. I have now used it a bit over ten times - maybe 15 - and can not find any wear at all. But its been summer all the time since i built it so a more fair answer would be next year actully. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

@@rbslammed6163 well it worked just fine, however it needs constant attention, and adding charcoal or wood chips means taking everything out. So I just use it for the smoking process for about three hours, than I wrap it and use the oven, the smoke flavor and ring are great.

I assume if i was to go up to 400F it would be a problem, but since nylocks are temp graded to withstand temps up to 250F - and first after that loosing their locking ability (not necesssarily meling at 251F...) i have had no issues - :)
