As a Brazilian fan it's great seeing this. Diniz faced tons of criticism in the past. His system, referred as "Dinizismo", was becoming a type of joke in Brazilian footbal. We can safely say that things only started working out for him this year. Now he's even being considered for coaching the seleção.

He never had a player like Ganso on his other works, as a São Paulo fan I can say that was the best my club played for years, although we had a severe problem on defense our attacks were creative and prolific, also I loved the way he utilized Igor Gomes and Gabriel Sara on the wings of a 4-4-2, they were absolutely everywhere on the field and this opened up so many opportunities for Luciano and Brenner. It's a shame that he lost the squad because he really had something good going, but now I think Fluminense really fits his needs and we'll see them fight for almost every title this year.

It is impossible to compare a work of 2 years with 3 or 4 weeks with many different players for each training session and games. And, if Argentina wins or loses, none of that will change.

As a Fluminense fan, I can definitely say that any team that picks up André will be acquiring a spetacular central defense midfielder. There are a lot of teams in Premier League interested on his football, so it is very likely he is going there in January. We will miss him a lot!

That's great seeing some love for Brazilian club football specially for Fernando Diniz's Fluminense. His game can be seen as a "modernized" version of what Brazil did right in the past: creating a system where the self expression of talented players is amplified through associations that give them room to improvise. His idea of football appeals for the "indolent genius" archetype so common in Brazilian Football: we produce the most technically gifted players in the world, but they often lack the discipline and education to settle into formal structures. That's why so many promising players struggle to thrive in Europe. And it's important to note that the idea to packing a small area of the pitch to explore short fast passes resembles futsal. Many Brazilian players start their youth careers playing in courts rather than in pitches. For many of them, Futsal builds skills such as being press resistant, doing fast positional rotations and passing on the first touch in very tight spaces. But there's another side to Diniz's philosophy: he has a bachelor degree in psychology and an integral part of his workstyle is building the confidence of their players. Both on themselves and on their teamates to execute such a high-risk / high reward style of play.

O maior problema até agora nos times do DIniz é a instabilidade. O time joga muito bem até o primeiro desastre acontecer. Vitória espetaculares e derrotas igualmente espetaculares. Vi isso no meu São Paulo, perdendo um campeonato mais ganho que o do Arsenal esse ano. Não sei se isso é culpa do esquema dele ou de jogadores que ainda não estão adaptados a esse estilo. Mas sei que é um sistema bastante exposto que com frequência dá oportunidade para que erros de saída de bola resultem em desastres.

@@gnevescoelho Acho que o negócio no São Paulo foi o lance do perninha mascaradinho. Pegou muito mal, claro, porque foi de fato algo bem zuado. Aí ainda veio a eliminação pro Grêmio, que ganhou de 1x0 tendo só 1 chute a gol num contra ataque, e o São Paulo tendo 80% de posse de bola, aí virou chacota.

He just reinvented Telê Santana's Brazil 82 and São Paulo FC 91-93. For those who doesnt know Cruyff and Telê are Guardiola's inspiration for that 4231 that changed football meta back in +- 05.

That's basically classic Brazilian football. Finally, someone is bringing it back into Brazilian football. The European-ish game practiced by Brazil's national team these days could be one of the reasons for their unsuccessful runs in the last 5 world cups.

I coach an American youth squad... U9 level nothing major... This video gave me ideas on how to setup the team for them. At times, some players have trouble with keeping their shape. Instead of shape if they had more freedom by emphasizing give and goes that might help more of the team stay mentally engaged. Thank you for your work with this video!

I played in my teenage years, and it doesn't matter what you practiced through the week, when the team was in a tough spot during a game, we all (coaches and players) knew that ir was the moment to geive the talnted players some freedom. At least the team gets a different mood.

@alvarohigino Good Q - The team is in a metro area. There's a mix of Latin American, African, Asian and American. I don't think it's an issue of obedience, they all want to be good teammates. Some players get overly focused on where the ball is and forget to hold their shape. It's nothing intentional, they're still learning how to play.The video gave me the idea that instead of reminding them to keep their position, I could try to encourage the team to play in a way that suits their style. So emphasize things like give and go's... And playing on the side of the pitch vs the middle. My goal is to help the players be the best version of themselves, to find their style, so they can find their passion.

True history Diniz has been known for playing out of the back, so teams started to press high against his teams he is such a creative coach that I saw him doing something that I have never seen before or since I was in the stadium watching Parana FC (he managed them briefly). When the opposite team went to press high, Diniz made a GOAL KICK SET PIECE. Parana had a goal kick, and the opposition pushed up, waiting for the short pass, DC and DM were also at the box's edge. Then out of nowhere, the DC pushed up, rushed to about the mid-circle, and turned back. The GK chipped the ball to the DC. The DC had no problem protecting the ball against a midfielder, and he made a wall, pivoting for the DM that was rushing up with the opposition behind him. It was so clean and choreographed. The team nullified the pressing line with this, which was baffling, a goal kick set piece. I've never seen that anywhere.

I feel like there’s a lot of similarities with this and the way Real Madrid play under Ancelotti. A lot of freedom of movement, particularly in midfield, looking out of shape at times but while still playing the ball around the opposition. Even Modric spoke in an interview one time mentioning how they play a lot on instinct, just coming close and combining with one another but so effectively cause they’ve built strong relationships with each other on the pitch and are given the freedom to just play and move where feels natural.

Personally I think it suits the Brazilian football pedigree and their instinctive understanding of the game as a whole a lot better than positional play would anyways. These guys have an awareness of where players could be rather than knowing where they should be, creating pockets of patterns that I imagine would expose the rigidity of these carbon copy academy graduates and tacticians.

@@Proclubsgoat22 exactly this! There couldn’t have been a better place than Brazil for this play style to grow and develop. Where their players can really make use of that inherent natural skill and instinctive ability they seem to possess. Would be great for it to be more widely adopted at a higher level and see it match up against big clubs and countries using a more orthodox positional play style. Could be a massive game changer.

Very accurate video. Fluminense is now at the Libertadores Final (The South American UCL) as the favourites, playing a beatiful game to watch, and Diniz is the manager of the Brazilian National Team. The most incredible thing for me is the fact that Fluminense is not even close to be club that spends more money in Brazil, or in South America, if i am not wrong, they are the 12th in the ranking of the clubs that spend more money with salaries and wages. Diniz almost didnt have any new signings since his arrival, ´´only´´ Marcelo, because he wanted to come back to the club that he began his carrer. The team has a lot of players from their academy, and is mixed with some veterans, such as Felipe Melo, Marcelo, Fabio. And the system has also helped German Cano, their striker, to be the player with most goals over the last 2 years, with more goals scored than Haaland, Mbappe, and other superstars at this period of time. It is incredible what is happening, they play in a system and structure extremely bold and brave, and is very entertaining to watch. Diniz has always been labeled as a crazy manager with a system that would never work due the the fact that european system was been aplied in Brazil, and it was a superior system. But he kept his beliefs even struglling sometimes and made everybody realize here in Brazil that we were selling our DNA to try to win, trying to imitate the europeans, and we realize that, by trying to imitate them, we will never beat them at their own system, and we have the play our game, in our way if we want to be best once again. If you are a footbal fan from Europe, I recommend you to watch some Fluminense´s matches in Copa Libertadores or the Derbys with Flamengo (By far the richest club in Brazil), that Fluminense are constantly beating in the last years, even with a massive budget difference between the clubs. It is very entertaining and interesting team to watch. Mainly because they never give up their way to play, doesnt matter the opponent. And there is a good chance to Fluminense to play against Man City at the World Club Championship, and even in City scores a 5-0 they will keep playing the same way. Sorry for the poor english, but if you are a football fan, trust me, we watch the South American and European football, and Diniz at the Fluminense is the most interesting thing happening at world´s football right now. PS: I support Vasco, a strong Fluminense´s rival.

And I also recommend to watch Diniz talking about his own system and why he does that. He always quotes that his system is made to make the players to have the same fun that they used to had when they were little boys, he tries to make them love the game in the same way that they used do love when they were young. He constantly says that is possible to win and have fun, and making the players exercises limited functions without improvisations take aways the motivation that made then loves the game, thats why he encourages the players to improvise, take risks, to try to make bold and risky plays, because thats what made ballers to feel joy while the are playing. So his games his based in having fun, improvisations and solidarity between players.

If you imagine Messi, Neymar and Suarez (now playing for Gremio, a great club from south of Brazil) we always had a different 'spice' europeans never had. Messi from Argentina, Neymar from Brazil and Suarez from Uruguay, the best trio in the lasr 15-20 years of football. This is south american football! I love Mmbappe, he seemed to be one of the best of the decade after his 1st World Cup, but never proved itself after internal troubles playing for PSG. Europe have CR7 (we call him a little robot) because he is well known for his discipline, but that magic of playing football in such diverse, self resoluting plays, dribling skills is something we from south america have. Europeans are wel known for tatics, but one-on-one no one beat us.

And alot of cruel criticism towards him. Brazilian journalism works on almost though criminal modus, and that's why Brazil is falling on ⚽ game, it's our own fault as a Brazilian towards professionals and what they want to bring to the sport. We're still using terms and creating heroes and villians pointing fingers playing the crystal ball or being post game specialists. When stuff start to get close enough, the real life just don't work like outsiders or spectators wants to, so it's better to start to be more smart and change and putting everyone on their position. Changes can't work through day and night, so, I admire more the resilience of Diniz than his work itself.

I'm a Flamengo supporter and I second this. If you really like football, it's hard not to admire Diniz's work, even after a crushing defeat to him. I won't even be that mad if Fluminense eliminates Flamengo in the national Cup... As long as Fluminense goes out to win the friggin' thing with style, that is. Deal? o/

Torcendo muito pra ele dar certo na seleção e trazer a taça de 26. Sou fã dele. O cara pra prosperar como técnico no Brasil tem que ser mto bom, tem que ter mta qualidade e firmeza. Pq o brasileiro é mto exigente, coloca tudo no amor pelo seu time. Só no último mês mandamos embora dois europeizados que só fizeram bobagem aqui: Jorge Sampaoli (argentino, mas estilo europeu), do Flamengo e Bruno Lage (português), do Botafogo, que ia conseguir a façanha inédita de fazer um time líder do campeonato com distância de 14 pontos de vantagem para o segundo colocado perder título.

With that, he has been rescuing our DNA, our essence, the soul of Brazilian football, in which talent, improvisation, "the ginga", made us five times world champions. It allows athletes to use all their creativity and talent without giving up solidarity with their teammates.

This is normal in South African football 🤷🏾‍♂️... Coach Pitso Mosimane has won 3x CAF Champions league titles and 2x Club World cup bronze medals playing this type of football. Mamelodi Sundowns dominate African football with this style of play.

There's no much than taking european coaches and bringing back Brazilian players who played in Europe, that was common in the past, but now we have the players who has grown their football in Europe and not in Brazil. Our league is basically playing low/mid-budget european football.

Another really important thing to say about Diniz jobs are the human aspect of the thing. Much more than tactics his word of command is COURAGE. In Fluminense backstage videos you can see him yelling at players asking them to not be afraid of trying dribbling or difficult passes even thought it is on a critical zone of the pitch. This reflects on many relates of players that played with him saying that Diniz helped them outside of the pitch. Alexandre Pato even said that Diniz helped him to get out of depression and Bruno Guimaraes said that Diniz changed his life. Diniz always says that his biggest trophies are no championships and yes the recognition of players for the human relationship they develop

Great video, please consider doing more Brasileirão/south american content. High-level english language analysis is an untapped niche here on YT imo. While I don't know what the metrics of this particular vid will end up being, I'm a big believer in the 'build it and they will come' mentality. This is for sure one of the best football videos I’ve seen. Would love to see more of these videos focused on different perceptions of football challenging European hegemony, and even what does that mean politically and socially, as the video outlined. It really does make me think about the relationship of football and other areas of society, such as ways of understanding power, authority, and space for creativity and agency. Very good analysis, you were able to really depict on the key points of the game model. The culture dimension Diniz brings to Brazilian football is also a key factor, because in Brazil a player grows up in love with this kind of game. The “tabelas”, the freedom to move and attack, the improvisation and lack of structure are a huge part of Brazilian football culture. Important points for those who are not Brazilian: Even though it is a very traditional club, in terms of budget, Fluminense is currently a mid table team. So to reach 3rd in the league is overachieving a lot. Also - Diniz has been around for quite a few years already, always with a similar style, and varying returns. He is an idealist, kind of like Bielsa in that sense. His teams have shown to be vulnerable to low block teams with quick wing outlets who can use the empty side to its advantage, and there is no shortage of quick, skillful wingers in Brazil. Trying to press his teams high can be a very high risk/high reward proposition too - they are very well trained to break out of pressure, but will also play with very high risk out of the back. When it works, it is beautiful, dominating football, like the destruction of Flamengo in the Carioca final. When it doesn’t, he can be in the other side of that beating.

Mas meu comentário é sobre o Diniz especificamente - por isso q comparo ele ao Bielsa. Bielsa é um dos “pais” do estilo Guardiola, mas sempre teve trabalhos irregulares, com momentos brilhantes e derrotas inesperadas, por ser purista/idealista. Ele vai ao extremo. O Diniz, com um estilo bem diferente, é parecido

I was delighted since the beginning of the video but when you talked about Ganso I couldn’t believe it. It’s great he gets the recognition he deserves outside of Brazil. He is one of the best midfielders I’ve ever seen in my life (specially in that unbelievable Santos team) and as you said, and many say in Brazil, an old-school 10 we unfortunately don’t see anymore and is in extinction. I hoped he could get world fame but unfortunately Europe and his injuries probably didn’t help him. Fantastic video.

The old school 10 will only make a comeback if coupled with dynamics. Ganso still does not move enough. Big liability defending and even attacking if you need pace. Unfortunately, just smarts and technique cannot get you far today.

Honestly, i think this would work so well in International football. Even more so with Brasil. Coaches often don't get the time to prepare the intricate movement of Position play, and it just results in predictable and daft movement (Portugal...). But if you have high quality players, who are good on ball control, and have the energy to counter press when the ball is lost... This, i think, would work really well

That is the opposite. Positional game is much easier to train, basically you ask for the players to cover part of the pitch and give an option to their teammates. Playing like Fluminense requires a lot of training, chemistry and game reading to move freely and dont leaving open dangerous spaces.

As a USMNT fan, that was my exact thought throughout this whole video. Our mess of a federation is often alternating between trying to be as European as possible and Americanizing everything, and often succeeds at neither. Our last couple of national team managers in Berhalter and Klinsmann have been so laser-focused on building a European style position-play team, but inevitably our teams often disappoint and the fans end up sitting thru mind-numbing 0-0 draws against the likes of El Salvador and Trinidad. This Diniz philosophy feels like a potential solution for at least SOME of our national team’s problems. A lot of our best players from the US are high-energy, tireless runners who tend to be positionally flexible. Plus many of them have been playing with each other for years, so Diniz’s idea of placing the emphasis on player relationships and flexibility feels like it could work wonders for our team. Knowing our federation tho, we’ll probably not embrace Diniz’s philosophy in the US team until at least a decade after the world game has moved on.

What an incredible essay. Diniz was always seen as an ongoing joke in Brazilian football since his first appearance at Fluminense in 2019. Shuffling between clubs, he was always seen as an "idealistic coach who can play beautifully but never wins any trophies". I'm glad that he is finally back on my team and the media is now taking him more seriously and giving him a well-deserved credibility for trying to revolutionize national football. As a Fluminense fan I just really hope he can get us some trophies before moving to Seleção 😅 But never in my life I've been more excited as of now to see my team play each week, truly a work that represents the art of football in its beauty.

Winning championship and flair doesn’t go together. You should know this. There’s a reason why FLAIR players went out of style. You’re relying on individual make something happen but if the opponent is very strict defensively, flair means nothing. That’s why positional play became the META. That’s how you win games and championships. Without it, you have no chance at winning trophies.

VERY good analysis! I would like to add something’s great about Diniz. He is a psychologist and have a great concern about the state of mind and well being of his players. Which is quite different in Brazil, where the vast majority of players comes from very poor and not structured families. Players usually love Diniz.

Funny you mention Ozil along with Ganso. Back in 2010, when Brazil first found out about Ozil in the World Cup, people instantly compared him to Ganso (2010 was the beginning of the Neymar-Ganso era in Santos). Some guys in the press were literally calling Thomas Muller the White Neymar and Ozil the German Ganso.

@posebno nista It has already been done. Have you seen prime Barca under Guardiola? There biggest strength wasn't positioning but the ability to play out of seemingly impossible tight spaces. I'm surprised Purist football didn't pick up on this. Positional football can be very predictable if the players don't have the quality or relationship to be able to play out of tight spaces which is what current Barca suffers from whereas Guardiola's Barca was very good at it.

@posebno nista Dani Alves suffered? C'mon man! Arguably the best RB in Barca's history and are you gonna tell me Messi and Alves's off the charts chemistry was choreographed by Guardiola? Lol. If quick one touch passing outta tight spaces is Diniz's style then this is basically what the Spanish call "tiki taka", something Pep hasn't been able to replicate outside of Barca because you need the quality of players to do it which at Braca wasn't just Messi, Xavi & Iniesta but also Busquets, Alves, Pedro & many others. There academy La masia definitely played a role as well. Xavi seems to very strictly play positional football, don't see much flexibility from him and like I said you need quality players who can have such a 1st touch and chemistry which I don't think the current Barca squad has.

@posebno nista It will literally be the opposite. Man City right now are one of the best teams ever. Even in every part of society, robotic structures will obviously take over. Its simply more effective. Why do you think western culture has higher gross domestic product? Because they use effectiveness and structure and dont focus on intuition and beauty so much.

One thing I missed in the video, it's their defensive positioning. They defend in a classic 4-4-2 , super compact, even Cano moves back to defend.

Oh wow, I enjoyed this video. I'd want Diniz style to be successful so the world can appreciate this style of football cos for me I have always been in awe of styles like this. I'd prefer it for counterattacks though. Then I like the concept of order touched in the video and the civil war of Brazilian football. I also think African countries have this internal conflicts as well. But Diniz is proof football can take any form. Great video Purist, Great video. 😊

I really hope Dinizismo flourishes because modern coaching is making football too robotic and players don't get enough freedom to play with more flair. There's a reason why football is called 'the beautiful game' and I don't consider most of the football played in the 'top' leagues to be beautiful.

Worth noting with Ganso that the perception of him being too individualistic stems mostly from how he doesn't run (or rather hustle), especially to defend. He's very much like Riquelme in that sense. As a South American, I would say this works also partly because teams like River are trying to play in a top class European way using players that might have the techical ability, but not the physical preparation for it. Flu's approach in that sense is also an acknowledgement of the shortcomings of our continent, while trying to play to our strengths. Would be cool to see this kind of philosophy evolve into something that makes the Club World Cup interesting again.

Funny thing is, that 2002 Brazil team was one of the least Brazilian, jogo bonito teams. They were very structured with 7 defense first players to provide cover for only 3 attacking players. After Emerson got injured, they had huge problems in the middle of the pitch. Scolari arrived to a 3-4-1-2 where the 3 centrehalves and the 2 central midfielders were completely defensive. And the attacking was only done by the 3 attacking players who were supported by the 2 wingbacks running up and down. It turns out that when you have the last golden generation of Brazilian football, and the wingbacks are Cafú and Roberto Carlos and the attacking players are Rivaldo, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho, that's enough...

I strongly disagree. There is also beauty in a perfectly plan out tactical masterclass. Again, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. Beings strategic, or in our context tactical, doesn’t imply restriction. It just means we have an objective that we would like to accomplish optimally, whilst having fun.

I miss this type of freedom in play, the premier league is so damn boring now compared to the 90’s and early 2000’s. The classic 10 disappearing is such a loss. I grew up watching Matt Le Tissier grace the field, a player who wouldn’t fit into modern football but I’d pay the entry price to watch week after week because of his ability to do the unthinkable out of nowhere. I miss those days.

I loved this video and specially the idea of connecting political philosophies AND culture to how a team plays. Another interesting idea that I've been thinking of lately is how different the actual upbringing of these players are. In Brazil players start by playing rather freely and formations, at early ages, are way less rigid than they are in North American and European leagues. Positional plays become more important a lot later in the Brazilian leagues compared to the N. American and European leagues. I remember growing up playing football in a way less structured way and then moving to North America and everything was so rigid and defined by one single task for each person in the team that I couldn't fit in at all. The majority of people in Brazil play football in this manner, outside of a league scenario. In N. America everything even, sunday leagues are so formalized. This style of playing has a "pelada feel" which is how most people grew up playing. Thanks for making such a great analysis video!

By your account, I assume you moved to North America at least a few years ago, right? If that's the case, I have sad news for you... At least according to local journalists, the young academies of our biggest clubs have started to train the kids as rigidly as the mainstream international leagues. That is, they're told to stick to their position, always pass the ball in the same manner and never try anything different with possession - all of that as early as possible, when they're still 12 or even 10-years old. This has been a frequent discussion topic in many sports shows I watch, how (most of) our clubs are trying to tame the quintessential Brazilian player by training them to fit the European football they'll eventually be sold to. Which is exactly why this video and, of course, Diniz's Fluminense is so important right now. I'm a Flamengo supporter, their biggest rival, and even then sometimes I catch myself thinking Flu should win everything this year just to shake things up. We kinda need it before it's too late.
