Wondering if you can help with a casting problem. I've noticed on my forward cast as it is at the end of the loop it kind of snaps back from basically the leader forward. It's hard to explain but there ends up being a U shape in my leader it doesn't roll out away from me.

Thanks, started Fly Fishing this weekend from spinning rods and I'm "hooked". Buying a "Greys" fly rod with reel and line this weekend. It's already pre set but the gentleman assured me it's still a really good quality set and I shouldn't be concerned with the quality of the fly line ?
@FlyFishDan
@FlyFishDan Ай бұрын
Awesome! That fly line will work for the first season, but you'll want to upgrade once you think you're going to stick with it. Fly line makes a huge difference in your casting experience (long-term anyway...). Hope that helps!

Dan. Thanks. But, something I have never seen explained before is when I’m watching your reel direction, when the rod is forward the reel is in line, when your rod goes back to ‘10 oclock’ the reel points at (about) 90° to the forward stroke. Is this correct? (65 years old).

I rotate my wrist somewhat on the back cast - it can be a problem if rotated too much. The camera makes it appear to be far greater than it actually is.

I"ve watched so many vids - all these pros, excellent pro-tips .... You know how often they talk about how to get line out? after a dozen vids this one kind of explains it. He's also casting into the current - that's opposite of what others have said to do. It's time time to go outside I think and figure it out.

How are you able to false cast like that with an indicator and multiple nymphs? I’ve been told by multiple people, including the guys at my local fly shop, that you should not try to cast a traditional 10-2 style with a nymph setup that includes an indicator and split shot. Every time I try, a tailing loop forms when I cast forward leading to nasty wind knots. I’m even being mindful of my cadence and allowing the line to fully extend behind me before casting forward. Any advice?
@FlyFishDan
@FlyFishDan 7 күн бұрын
I typically will use a technique called 'water loading' or the 'pick up and lay down' cast when I have multiple flies with an indicator. False casting can be done, but any flaw in the technique...you are tangled. So even after 40 years of doing this myself, I typically will use the pick up and lay down cast when casting a set up like that.

What rod would you recommend to a beginner
@FlyFishDan
@FlyFishDan 2 ай бұрын
I would recommend a 5 weight, 9' long 4-pc for a starter fly rod for trout. Echo makes a great entry level rod, so does Redington. The Sage Foundation is also a rock-solid choice.

What causes my leader to always smack my fly line soon as it hits the ground? Sometimes it happens sometimes it doesn’t.
@FlyFishDan
@FlyFishDan 2 ай бұрын
If it smacks it on the final cast (just before the presentation) then it's a tailing loop caused by using too much force in the cast. If it is stacking up in front of you, look back at your back cast and be sure it fully extends behind you before bringing it forward so the line rolls out nice on the final cast

Thank you for making this video. I just have a question for anybody on here. I just started fly fishing yesterday. Am I supposed to have a nine foot leader and a one foot tippet and cast the fly rod with that? Was out trying on a lake a little while ago and am thinking that this can not be the way. Anybody knows the answer could they put that out, thank you, Joe.
@FlyFishDan
@FlyFishDan Ай бұрын
Hello Joe! When you buy a 9' tapered leader, it is comprised of about 6 feet of tapered line (thick to thin) and the last 3 feet of that tapered leader has a consistent thickness (and is referred to as the tippet section of the tapered leader). The only time you need to 'add' tippet, is when the full leader has been shortened by tying on fly after fly or when cutting out a knot. Hope that makes sense.

You MUST bend your wrist while casting
@NSFishingLife
@NSFishingLife Ай бұрын
If someone tells you not to bend your wrist when (when, not if) you practice, nod your head, thank them for their sage advice, and promptly ignore them. Strangely, the worst place to learn how to cast a fly rod is on moving water, especially when just beginning.

you practice wrong and you still cant cast. sorry to tell you that. You have severe casting panic that can be cured. You should start by watching the FlyQ series fly fishing intelligence quotient series. Greetings from Ireland

I challenge you to a cast off! Over 100,000 people I have helped with their fly fishing cast would disagree with you. Your attitude is the exact reason I started my KZfaq channel - wringing the elitist right out of the sport. Cheers and FISH-ON!!

@FlyFishDan challenge accepted. Are you making the rules for that cast off ?or me? Do we include double handed rods or not? I m not an elitist, you couldn't be farther from the truth. I m starting a revolution in fly casting. I have the highest level of control in the sport. Have you heard of cool casting? Do we include cool casting, the cubic spey and the half spey too? I invented bonkerspey aka cool casting , if u don't know what that is,, do your homework. What you do does not help people as much as it could. Watch the FlyQ series. Maybe that alone can cure your casting panic.

It's important to remember that a collaborative and respectful approach helps everyone learn and grow. Presenting your knowledge with humility and openness fosters a more positive and inclusive environment. Your comments are not in alignment with this sentiment, and you are attempting to discredit someone you don't even know. Attempting to minimize what I am teaching and referring to my style as something that needs to be fixed or 'casting panic' as you call it; lacks basic respect and comes across as arrogant and narcissistic. There are more ways to cast a fly rod - there isn't such a thing as a perfect cast whether you employ your way or mine. Presenting yourself in the way you are to someone you don't even know reinforces the negative perception that this is an elitist sport...and that is exactly the opposite of what my channel represents and why you don't have very many followers despite your proclamation of being an all-knowing innovating revolutionist in the sport. So, with that being said and based on your continued arrogance, I rescind my offer for a cast-off.

oh dan, your so cute waving your fish pole. but maybe leave the instruction to certified instructors..... you missed on the number one most important aspect (in my unhumble opinion) which is accelerating to an abrupt stop. after watching you make many casts, i think you could aid your personal casting a lot by focusing on the stopping of the rod, the most essential part of a good fly cast. lefty kher and tim rajeff videos should go to the top of your suggested list.
