Flying a Diamond DA50 Around the World

In January 2022, Matthias Niederhäuser and Robin Wenger departed on a trip of a lifetime: A global circumnavigation in a new Diamond DA-50. In this video, AVweb interviewed the pilots when their route took them through Florida in late March. They discuss the planning and execution necessary to fly such a trip in a single-engine airplane with a new, untried powerplant.

That trip is a dream come true, thumbs up for these two! I probably would have been to scared to try this in a single engine plane, but in a 62/42? I'd be all over that!

What a fantastic trip! I really like the Diamond aircrafts and running on diesel/kerosene seems so much better than leaded gasoline.

Very cool! Diesel plane engine. The demonization of diesel engines is horrible and a mistake. Great job boys and a story for life.

Great job! Impressed with the engine. You talked about no weather over the Pacific. There is a relative unexpensive solution from Golze Engineering by using the Software from Golze ADL, Iridium Go and a Data (optional phone) subscription. I use it in my jet all time, you can make phone calls, position reporting, messages, emails and of course full weather in text and graphic. I’m not affiliated to Golze or Iridium, it’s just works great for any place in the world. Again guys, great job and for sure a one in a time experience.

13 hours from Hawaii to the mainland. In a single engine that's 🌰s! I was young and adventureous once and flew new Cessnas from Wichita to Troutdale in the 70s. Who sponsored this? ERAU 80 CFIA&I ret.

Strange, that it took them 111 days. I know they took a circuitous route, but some have managed to sail around the world in about half the time.

To quote Bill Nye, Consider the following; they were limited to a specific path to island hop to stop, refuel, etc. in the S. Pacific and N. Atlantic. One can probably trace a more direct route to travel via water, considering the world contains about 75% water.

We had a kid at Jeff air pilot services in greenwood try this at 17 him and his father both crashed and died good luck

Too bad you can’t park the thing in between any other planes for small general aviation acft like Cessna and Cirrus because the wingtips intrude into the other guys parking spot, so your always having to park away from the terminal or use jet spots which the FBO doesn’t like cause your not a money maker.
