The DHL plane's horizontal stabilizer feeling the tremor, shaking.. despite the plane being stationary.. gives some idea if HOW MASSIVE the engines on these things are.. ... that they can lift a fully loaded pressurised metal/ carbon fibre tube into the upper reaches of the atmosphere.

Lift force is generated by wings, not by engines. Engines only makes forward thrust to counteract air drag.

The atmosphere stretches far higher than 40 thousand feet. Ceiling of passenger jets around 40 thousand feet is more of a practical compromise among various factors; let's say it is governed by a combination of the economics and technology.

In the Air Force, stationed in England, we had an Air Rescue C-130 get hit by lightening, right into the weather radar. Navigator wrote it up as sweep stopped. I helped the Radar tech and what we found, it hit in the gear box and welded everything together. we had to replace everything in the system, everything overloaded and destroyed.

787 crosswind landing: what is that small chute (?) hanging from the top of the tail fin?
@tracktronics
@tracktronics Жыл бұрын
I believe it is a trailing 'static cone' that is used by Boeing during certification tests to accurately measure the static air pressure remote from the aircraft. They can calibrate the onboard sensors by comparing the measured readings to the static cone reading which is equivalent to ambient.

The plane has lower resistance that the air around it. The lightning will generally follow that path for as long as possible and leave at the opposite side.
