I lived there in the 1950s as a youngster. I'd love to try living there again for a season, or year, to experience a downsized life and clean air and water. But I suspect the cost of electricity, food and heating would make life there unaffordable with current energy prices. If fishing and hunting at enough quantity is allowable to provide sustainable protein it might be doable for the right person or couple who could take weeks of miserable weather at a time. Speaking of sustainable life in Alaska, a buddy actually farmed in southern Alaska (not island) and grew enough root vegetables and berries to provide for himself, wife, and even sell surplus. But he knew how to skin and butcher an elk so the whole idea of living in Adak affordably on game to some degree is probably out of my league. They lived pretty well on salmon, game, and what he grew. He lengthened the short Alaska growing season a few months a year with an in-ground heated greenhouse so I imagine that may not be feasible with heating costs on Adak. Eventually he could not keep up with the physical labor and had to sell, but for the 40 years he was eking out a hard life in Alaska he and his wife loved it. Just thinking out loud if living there could be supplemented with game and fish right there.

Yeah, this was in 2012 when I visited Adak. It’s probably time for a re-visit myself. It would be nice to see if anything changed in the last 10 years. I noticed weather will overtake the buildings if not maintained.

You should do Mare Island, California, another navy base that closed the same time as Adak.

I met an old dude from Findland one time, he kept bitchin about "I got to get back to copper country, der watch you coll". I had no freaking idea what the old dude was talking about. After he died in 2016 the barmaid told me he used to work at the Kennicott Copper mine. Hell we were in Adak Island AK. Kennicott would be over 1600 miles by sea. The old bastard used to get drunk and just kept saying "I got a get back to copper country, der watch you coll". The old boy was 102 when he died. Now I guess we all know what he meant. I wished the bar on Adak was still open so I could tell the other patrons.

As a resident, what do you do for doctor, dentist, prescription medicines? Life there ain't for everyone!
@JaysWorldTravels
@JaysWorldTravels Жыл бұрын
You can order prescriptions in the mail. The dentist comes to town and sets up shop in the school and then everyone gets their teeth done that week. Then he goes back to Anchorage. They have a small clinic, but they also have medivac plane service if it is serious.

great video. what bike is that? do all airlines allow this kind of luggage? how do i get a local to drive me around, rent, taxi?
@JaysWorldTravels
@JaysWorldTravels 2 жыл бұрын
That's a foldable Go Bike. Yes, I checked it in with Alaska Airlines. They allow for oversized pieces of luggage. I just called up a random number in the phone book to talk with a local and they gave me advice.
