Steven, Thanks for the memories. I ran the Post Office as a young PC1 1984-85. The post office was located in the Navy Exchange/Commissary building along with the bank, barber shop and a some other small shops. My son was born on Adak.

I went to Elementary School at Ann C Stevens in the 80s. I remember it was brand new & it had digital clocks & retractable walls to make the classrooms bigger. My teacher, Ms. Burrell adopted a baby. We had a baby shower for her. She was an amazing teacher. Life was good. If I only knew then just how good it really was.

Nice job giving us an aerial view of what many called home for a few years of our lives. We were very busy during the “ Cold War” so living on Adak you didn’t feel isolated, at least I never did. Worked hard, played hard, made a lot of great memories. Thank you for the efforts you put into showcasing Adak. 🇺🇸🍺

so disappointing to see this base in this shape, I was stationed there worked Aviation Supply in the AIMD Hanger, my Wife worked in the Commissary and my Son was born in that Dispensary in 1976. was stationed there 04 October to Jan 19 1978. Loved the Rock it was a sad day when I heard my name listed when they played Leaving on a Reeves plane on the morning radio show

Part of NSGA closure crew in 94-95. Tundra Tavern was the VFW. We moved VFW from old WWII Power Plant to what was Child Care center. I had the ugliest most comfortable maroon/orchid print sofa that put anyone who sat in it into coma. Sad to see the vandalism in many locations. The environment quickly takes over once utilities are shut down. Miss the excellent fishing and hunting.

Good to see the "Seven doors of Doom" I spent some time there guarding it in 1982-1983 but we never called it that. The Marine Barracks is toast now from what I have seen.

Yes, that Seven Doors of Doom thing cracks me up, I don't think they were ever called that until after we were gone. Also - the Tundra Tavern was a second story bar in the Bering building, at least when I was there 84-85.

@@damorgman same here there was no tinder tavern out back in an old dilapidated building it was on the second story in the Bering building, I got wasted there many a time. 😁👍

@@yalepolice8138 the name does not ring a bell but that doesn't really mean anything, I was there from May of 1982 through May of 1983 at the Marine Corps barracks.

11:00 pretty sure this is the old church I used to attend with my family when I lived in Adak as a youngster in 1954-58. My mom was the church organist.

I wonder what it takes to clean the existing buildings in use. Great video of the scope and size of the buildings still in use for a small community like that.

I think it's time to bring the military back to Adak. When Chinese balloons are allowed to fly over the Aleutians it's time to bring the military back.

They went and looked at it in 2020 or around that time. Their reason for not coming back is because everything is too damaged to repair. They’re either stupid or they’ve been infiltrated by foreign powers. We can send billions to Ukraine but we can’t defend an essential island chain that the Chinese/Russians could travel up just like the japs did.

no trees!!! Except for maybe some aluminum Christmas trees in the community center... you wouldda thought someone would have planted a few in peoples back yards... can imagine how that winter wind must blow through there... horizontal sheets of rain and snow... makes me cold thinking about it :(>

Just seeing all these fine buildings and very expensive metal roofing and effort that went into infrastructure planning, design and construction -- disgusted by the total waste.

I spent 70 /71 on adak enlisted as a cm3 so they assigned me to be a phone operator is the phone exchange a small block building still in use or standing
