PSA: Breastfeeding/Pumping moms: Fly Southwest. Their employees are educated. Every flight I've had to take with my Pump/milk-cooler has been a breeze. I even had a gate agent come to my defense when another passenger was being rude to me about 'excessive carry-ons'. More than one employee referred to my pump as "critical medical equipment". That's informed. And one flight attendant another time sweetly referred to the milk/cooler as 'precious cargo'.

ToxicGinger Southwest in general is great to travel with if you are traveling with kids. We bring our son’s car seat for him to use when we fly and have never had a single issue with Southwest. Other airlines have tried to not allow his car seat on the plane even though it’s legally allowed.

In 2010 on an international southwest connecting flight me and 10.other people got food poisoning from the food in flight. It was terrible. Southwest did nothing for us but i will say the flight attendents were top notch. They immediately understood what was going on and made bags availible and also cleared all the bathrooms for the sick people to use. I had a bad reaction and so did the passenger next to me. We just took turns holding eachothers hair. Flight attendent also made sure we had water and wet cloths to use on our faces. Still will never fly southwest again.

As a momma who's had to leave her baby in the NICU for 9 weeks...asking where's your baby is unacceptable! United needs to do some serious education about this with their employees!
@MiauMichigan

That employee was rude. I work for United and Mama Jones was right. Baby items are a exception item, no questions asked. Same thing goes for strollers or people who use a wheelchair. I would never ever ask a person "where's your baby?" or "why are you on a wheelchair?" but guess what...we receive training on that because it seems there're employees around the world who don't know what the word "respect" means. It drives me mad.

@@MiauMichigan Indeed. I am shocked how lots of people don't seem to have 'normal' values and respect for each other. And if you don't know about a subject, don't ask dumb questions! Because yes there is such a thing as a dumb question. And sadly dumb questions often result into hurt feelings. If you don't know anything about breastfeeding; Just call someone who does or simply say it's fine you can bring it, or is a question needs to be answered for safety; Ask the person to explain after you told them you are sorry but never had this situation at hand/don't have a girlfriend or children yourself etc.

Its disgusting how ppl want you to go breastfeed in a bathroom, like from now on any person i see eating/drinking anything and they demand some breastfeeding woman "go do that in the bathroom" i want to look at that person and say "uuhhh god sooo gross, can you please go do that in the bathroom?" And when they think im agreeing with them about the breastfeeding woman, go..."oh no, not her, thats natural and what boobs are actually for, i meant you with your disgusting masticating and digesting! Its repulsive! Oh whats that? You dont want to eat in a bathroom because its not sanitary??? Guess what that baby is also eating! And it doesnt have as strong of an immune system as you do! Its far more likely to get sick from eating in a bathroom than you would! So until you can learn what boobs are truly for and learn that the sexual aspect of them is something your pervert husband and his fellow Neanderthals came up with second to that, then if you dont want to see a woman breastfeed maybe instead of banishing her and her eating baby to a bathroom you should have to go hide in there till shes done, then problem is solved and you dont have to see it!" Although to whatever moron would say that im sure id have to define mastication/ing....ppl are so dumb.

@@greenLimeila the more you pump the more you make, every woman makes different amounts of milk. some have to make more. some just like to store it if they are planning to go out or to mix in baby food. or if you went out for a night and you drank you have to pump and dump for every drink since the baby cant drink it. or if your boobs are to full.. it can get really painful if you don't have a good pump. and if the baby cant drink it all out. when I was feeding my baby.. I had to keep pumping all the time and I kept having to wash my shirts none stop..some babies have a hard time lacking onto the nipple so moms who want them to have breast milk pump to.

I was asked 'where is your baby' in Tokyo after returning from an 8 day conference with 600 oz of milk. They would not let me bring it through their TSA and I had to go through customs, add it as a checked item (in a soft case!), and rush back through to make it on the flight home. I stressed the entire time that the bag would be punctured, lost, or the milk would go bad. Luckily I was able to freeze it at the hotel (in the future, just ask, most hotels are extremely accommodating) and it made it safely. It's unfortunate that it's not just the US that has difficulties understanding that women can be separated from their babies and still pump.

I am not going to wear a cover (it was 33°C today, it's going to be really comfortable to breastfeed whilst under a blanket), I am not going to go somewhere else. Somehow in the few times i was with him i ended up pregnant. I had 6 days of milk thrown away and told I wasn’t allowed to bring in on a united plane even though it was allowed through a different airline. I am so happy you just went on. They also asked me where my daughter was and if I could prove that I was producing milk still and that it came from me. I was so shocked by the question that I kind of just froze. You’re right about mommas and families out there going through a lot and still lactating. I am still heated by the situation and will never fly with them again. That agent is lucky they will likely never meet me because I would have straight up whipped out a boob and squirted them in the face with breast milk then asked if that is proof enough for them or do they need more? Of course I would probably then have been arrested for common assault and banned from flying with them ever again but it would be worth it for such a disrespectful agent to be put in their place.

A suggestion for those who still need it: If you’re flying or going on a train (similar rules with Amtrak) with anything medical, get medical equipment luggage tags. TSA are trained to look for these. Not only will they check these way more carefully, but any liquid exemptions due to medical reasons should be in these bags. If you have a little bag of medical supplies (think epi, inhailer, handheld nebulizer, insulin, etc), both the inner bag and outer bag need to be tagged with medical equipment tags. And if you have to deal with a pain in the ass carrier like United because your local airport provides no other legit options, having a copy of the TSA regulations either on the back of the tag (some tags come like that) or inside one of your bags as a friendly or passive aggressive reminder of the regulations regarding medical equipment and supplies.

I got eye rolls from every agent after I declared my milk. The lady who tested it took 20 minutes to test 6- 5oz bags! She also asked me why I pre-made so much formula and rolled her eyes and sneered out an okay when I told her it was breastmilk not formula. Even if it was formula, the tsa has no rules against how much liquid food you can take through for your kid. i was mildly annoyed. I know this isn't the worst experience people have had.

The part about the guy asking “where is your baby” actually made me cry. I have friends who have lost their babies who are still producing and have to pump. This is a question that people just don’t realize could be a VERY PAINFUL for some mothers to hear. Mothers who have lost their babies either before or after birth, given babies up for adoption or had their babies taken from them for whatever reason, are sharing custody, or whatever..... that would be an awful question for someone to ask them.

During that time my husband and I had to sleep at the airport, were not offered sleeping accommodations or anything at all for that matter to help offset the stress that was caused. Our only option was to wait however long it took or take a refund and still have to find a way home from across the country. UNITED IS A JOKE!

I had a similar experience. The second leg of my flight was cancelled, which left me stranded in Chicago. That was on Saturday, and they said they couldn't get me on another flight to my destination until Tuesday -- then I asked if they would put me on a flight back home, and they said no. I was like, WTF. I could have pushed it, but I still wanted to go on my trip, so I let them but me on a flight to another city nearish to my destination and spent 5 hours on a bus to get to my final destination. I had to pay for my hotel, and the bus, and after all that they still sent my suitcase to the wrong place -- it took them five days to deliver it, and every time I called to ask where my luggage was, I had to wait on hold for literally 2-3, sometimes even 4, hours.

I had flown United when I was 17 with a connecting flight and their plane wouldn't start up. When they finally had started the plane, my connecting flight was preparing for departure and had left around the same moment that I had arrived, stranding a minor at an airport with no way of renting a hotel room or having a place to stay. Instead of reimbursing me for the flight and finding me a new flight, all they did was argue with me and continued to tell me that I was lying about my age for free rooming and a new flight. Some doctors need to learn the importance of reading the freaking screen. Electronic health records were supposed to solve these problems. I stg every time I go to the doctor or ER I have to make sure I ask if any medication they’re giving me is contradicted with any of my medications or pre existing conditions because some doctors just don’t read. 9 times out of 10 they say “let me check” or “yes it is actually contradicted” and I would’ve been in a bad situation if I hadn’t asked. @@clairep3688 I constantly have the same issues. Always asked questions (usually repeatedly) that are answered by just looking at my records, or having to ask repeatedly myself whether my current meds are compatible with whatever they want to give me because I've had some bad experiences with getting side effects I should never have gotten because of that. Confirming certain details to make sure things are up-to-date is one thing, but it's so infuriating when it's painfully obvious they just never even looked at my records to begin with. I once had to go to the ER because my spinal pain got so intense that I couldn't sit, stand, or sleep and was literally in tears from it. I had the nurses ask the usual questions, which I answered by telling them I had a big history with back pain and scoliosis. Which is in my records. But that it had never been that bad before. They proceeded to make me wait 9 hours without any painkillers or even helping get my bed adjusted to be in a less painful position for me. (My mom was with me and had left to ask for help with that several times, but was turned away. Keep in mind this was like 3am because it was that bad and I hadn't slept.) The doctor FINALLY came in, proceeded to ask the SAME questions I'd answered 9 hours ago, and when I repeated my history of back issues and the diagnoses I'd gotten from literal physical therapists I'd been referred to, he acted like he didn't believe me at all and said I must just be constipated. (Most of the pain was on my tailbone area, for reference. But still.) I just repeated that he could CHECK my chart and that all of this info was right there, which is why I was even mentioning it. Especially since it was my primary care doctor who referred me to the physical therapy in the first place... He did not check and still insisted I was constipated. Finally gave me some painkillers to take home, which turned out to not be compatible with what I was already on and made me vomit horribly and have literal room-spinning dizziness. Fun times... I've never gone back to the ER if I can at all avoid it.

littlekitsune1 dang that sucks I’m so sorry. Something I’ve learned after moving from a large city to a smaller city is that many hospitals are actually way more understaffed at night than you would think. I grew up in a large city with 5 really big hospitals and 3 children’s hospitals that we could easily drive to if we needed to in the middle of the night without worrying about if they had enough staff. But now that I’m in a smaller city, they only have one hospital the size of those 5 that has a full staff all night. The rest of the hospitals only have one doctor and one PA at night. So I only go to the big hospital at night from now on, otherwise you’ll just be waiting forever. Edit: actually we have two big hospitals. The other one is just in the other network that has a lot of problems so I never go there.

I explained it was a breast milk pump and showed the bottles of milk I had just pumped. The security guard asked "Is that really breast milk?" I said "Would you like to try some?" Opened up the bottle and held it out to him. *Security guy nearly faints. *Guy standing beside me just about vomits. *Guy behind him made an "Oooooo" slightly too excited noise of sexual excitement. Hilarious! 😂 A very embarrassed security guard let me, baby and bags through no problem. I was laughing about that little adventure for WEEKS after! 😂

I had an issue flying back from London Heathrow to Cork (Ireland) I was at the check-in desk at departures and a member of the Aer Lingus crew at the desk asked me to show her My passport, She then kept looking up at me and down looking at My passport, She started questioning whether it was legitimate Passport as she said "that does not look like you on the Passport".... and then questioned me that "why did I have an Irish surname but born in Romania?" I clearly stated that I was adopted aged 4 to an Irish family, therefore I am an Irish citizen! She still wasn't convinced, then proceeded to say that "I didn't look Irish" *I was so furious that I was shaking* because She herself had a British accent but was clearly from India or UAE. She then got custom officers who brought me into a conversation room, they wanted proof of My adoption papers and wanted me to elaborate on My adoption which I refused to speak about because I didn't feel like I should explain that yes my biological parents were killed and I was put into an Orphanage up until I was 3 years old!!!!! I was so angry and upset that I cried in the bathroom for 20 mins after I was let go through security screening. Not only was it embarrassing for me, it was discrimination and blatantly racist! What kind of society do we live in?!

Failte, I'm sorry to hear that, it's just vile. For the record, I've had to ask for proof of age in previous work selling alcohol and I've had a black person and a brown person use Irish passports before and I've never asked or questioned why they have an Irish passport. As a passport holder of Ireland, USA and the UK, I could have started a nice chat only because I'm Irish too but I certainly wouldn't ever question why someone has a certain nationality and passport.

Not sure exactly when this was filmed. But legit 2 weeks before it was posted I was at SFO and changed/freshened up in that same bathroom! It's so nice to have that option to change and quickly wash up or do things like breastfeed!

Hi there!😊 Amazing video & very well said regarding that very disrespectful United Airlines. They must educate their employees more indepth of their policy, as they are the ones who created it. It should be extremely embarrassing to them that a customer knows more about their policy than the employees do. Wow!

I feel so bad for the mom who loses a baby and pumps and is asked ‘where is your baby?’ My mom lost twins and if she was asked ‘where is your baby?’ Or ‘where is your bump?’ (She lost them early early on.) she A would have had a mental breakdown, or B gotten really really mad. Thankfully everyone was really understanding and supportive of her. Even though I didn’t understand at the time I still tried my best to tell her it wasn’t her fault. So no one should ask a question like that because you never know if something happened or not.

I've done this but I checked it - put it in bags like you did and then we packed gallon bags of ice around it in small cooler and then in suitcase. I did carry on my pump - TSA guy turned 50 shades of red when a female TSA turns around and looks at the screen and goes - "Oh that's a breast pump" - LOL I thought he was going to pass out! so funny!

Should have gone "Karen" on them and demanded to speak to their supervisor. Also, IF you have to fly United in the future, print out from United's website and carry with you (multiple copies would be good) what you showed in this video and immediately present it to them if questioned or challenged again about carrying the breast milk onto the plane with you.

This is so United. I worked for a rival airline and United was even rude to our pilots. Edit: I now work somewhere where I thought it was more understood but my employer has given me so much grief and made it so public. I can't believe it's 100 years after 1920 and it feels nothing has changed. To say a summary: they are making me account for and make up the time I spend pumping. So my LOVELY coworkers said I should just pump at my desk. Luckily I have the Willow too, so I do, but some women can't and to ask me to stay "only 1 to 2 hours later" EVERY DAY when I'm already on a reduced schedule is just insane. What's worse is I could do my job completely from home but they insist I sit in this cubicle, so, I pump to avoid unworked hours.

Always do a screen shot of the exceptions an airline offers. I have oxygen concentrator and carry the policy and Mark my concentrator as medical. When Questioned, I pass over the paperwork and get right through. So much easier than without the policy at hand.

Tbh I loooooved the intro. I live with my sister, whom is a night nurse, with 3 young kids and she breast feeds them until they ween themselves (2-3 years) and your "I SLEPT FOR 7 HOURS!!!!" Excitement sooo reminded me of her when she's on a few nigh excursion with her hubby. It made me laugh! Unfortunately, my AEDs kept me from breastfeeding my 2 girls (teens now!)...but I'm going to ask my sister about all this. And bless you mothers in the comments I see that have lost your little ones. That is something I think would destroy me.

I work for an airline (not United) and for us it is included in the same policy that allows CPAP, portable oxygen concentrators, diaper bags and other "medical devices" onboard. We charge for carryon bags but these items do not go towards your carryon limit. So you can bring 1 personal item (purse, small backpack, etc), 1 paid carryon (assuming you pay for it), and your medical devices for free. If your baby is with you, you could even bring a diaper bag AND a bag for your breast pump and milk in addition to the other two items. Ours is included in our annual Part 382 training. It is done online, so I guess someone could just skip through it quickly. United has to do similar training because it is required by law. Guess their's isn't very effective though.

This should be sent to the news...that way the airline will get bad attention, and will have no choice, but to improve their policy for breastfeeding mothers. I have to travel soon. With my son, he is breastfed. I was told that I should take a bottle of Breastmilk, so he could have it on departure and landing, because his ears hurt. I am worried if he will take the bottle, but I do not want to make others uncomfortable if I pull out my breast, I use a cover, but he hates it, and pulls it off or away..

Paola Valtierra you can try to be discreet, BUT you dont have to and they cant tell you to stop. If you are really concerned, make sure you have a window seat so you can made turn your back to the person slightly. Other than that, you have the right to feed your kid everywhere. :) good luck!

Not sure if anyone else has said this but one tip to keep your milk colder would be to “sand which” it between the ice packs. That way it is surrounded and less likely to be subject to the temps outside of the bag. Also, thank you for making this. I always get nervous flying with my kids wether I’m EBF or EP because there is still way too much stigma associated with these actions and the requirements that go along with them.

It's terrible that so many big companies don't educate their employees properly. When I fly with my daughter (she'll be a toddler) I'm going to take a screenshot of the airlines protocol for food/drinks/etc., just for extra piece of mind in case I encounter any problems (it will be a long international flight). I shouldn't have to do that, but thank you for making me aware of how untrained the employees may be.
