This week we got to meet up with our Beechcraft expert Kelly Harper over in Scottsdale, AZ to fly the big King Air 350. This particular King Air 350 was recently completely remodeled and got an all new Garmin G1000nxi avionics suite, new paint and a new interior. The King Air 350 is the largest King Air on the market.
Here is a write up by Kelly Harper with more information on the performance figures and on the missions he usually flies in this plane:
Our typical mission is 350 miles average filed altitude is between FL240 to FL280. Typical KTAS is 295 first hour, heavy. After KTAS is 298 to 300. Fuel flow about 98 gals an hour. FL290 and higher gets you down to about 540lbs total an hour. Our aircraft empty weight is 9,480lbs gross weight is 15,000. The advantage of the 350 is obviously the increase useful load. The 200/250/260 is 12,500 so no type rating required. Typical useful load planning on a 200 is top the outboards and 6 pax gives you 4hrs range.
The 350 does have to use a TOLF chart for balanced field length were the 200/25/260 doesn’t.
We typically have a family with two adults and 4 children but we will load it up with all seats but our fuel load capability gives us the ability to do this with no problem.
Longer trips we will flight plan FL290 to FL330.

I wonder what Kelly thinks of Textron moving the Denali over from Cessna to become the heir apparent to the King Air 90.

The move of the Denali to Beechcraft makes sense based on the linage and success of Beechrcraft in the turboprop world. Textron competes in a variety of the market segments and watched the growth of the single engine turboprop market. Secondly the Denali is the launch platform for the GE Catalyst powerplant so the certification efforts have been two fold. While production numbers of the 90 continued to decrease the airplane still served a desirable market, however when there are higher production numbers of other Textron models the company ultimately choose to cease production. I agree that Beech has been the leader in Turboprop Business class aircraft, but with the Caravan and the new Sky Courier, I personally thought the Denali made a nice addition to the Cessna lineup. But, I see the logic in your statement. Thank you for allowing me to see another aspect I had not considered before.

Thing is the Denali was a king air to begin with it was the engine contract that almost made it a Cessna.

@@emtae65 Wikipedia disagrees with you. "Announced at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2015, the aircraft is a completely new design, not derived from any existing aircraft."

I owe my life to a King Air. The Royal Flying Doctor Service in Australia has a fleet of 200s and 350s in the eastern states. They do amazing work. I was transported from Innisfail to Townsville in one (while on life support) in far less than ideal conditions in 2011 after a bad car accident. Our rescue helicopter service couldn’t fly due to inclement weather and the RFDS was called in.

Absolute dream airplane. I've loved the King Air since I was a kid when we had one fly over our house regularly at KSYR. So, coming up on 4 decades since that time, I've *always* thought that the King Air was one of the best looking airplanes in the sky (in my mind, the only competition for looks is now the Epic 1000 GX - wowsers is that a good looking plane). I'm just a "lowly" private pilot that's too old now to get into biz aviation at 50 years old, but man... I would love to fly one of these some day. If you ever come through St. Louis (KSTL, KCSP, KSUS) give me a holler! :D

I just spotted a 350 flying from MCE to HNL. It appears to have taken about 7 hours. I was really impressed with it’s range.

What’s even more interesting is that the Queen Air came from the Twin Bonanza.. and the first Merlins were based on Queen Air wings and gear.

Very nice. I fly a couple of newer Proline 21s and a very original EFIS 85 UNS-1w. The Keats system is nice but definitely not without its flaws. I find we operate in manual most of the time.

I just started flying a 350 for a 135 operator, and I love the plane; it's a beast. Our panel is identical to the "before" photo, but the owner is thinking about a 650/750 upgrade.

Very nice plane, it's a shame the jets were discontinued. As i understand it, the company also set out to get into the automotive industry, designing and building a prototype called the Plainsman, though it was eventually cancelled. Thanks Rich

Wow - King Air pilots carry a well-deserved, confident swagger - and how about that landing at Flag! Slick as a boiled onion. The thing I recognized is how neat the sight picture is from a King Air on approach and landing - maybe it's my imagination but it seems different/cooler than other twins - including the bank to final. Only slight disappointment is omission of what should have been nice shots of the Frisco Peaks, which I'm guessing would have been conveniently positioned left abeam on downwind to base for 21. Passenger in the back should have been tasked on that. Any snow on there yet? I grew up on a ranch on Mingus Mountain, about 40 mi. SSW of the Peaks - our radio telephone service came in line of sight from a repeater there - way before cell phone days - it was hillbilly cell service....lots of "over" and "say again" in the conversations.

Got my ATP on my BE300 Type ride at Simuflight DFW with a Single Pilot Endorsement. I was pretty proud of that when I got out of the sim that day. Flew 25 years / 12.5K hours with no incidents, accidents, or violations flying 91, 135, and 121 and have been retired for the last 5 years. I don’t miss one thing about any of it. Nice airplane. We had a 3 tube with steam gauges on the co-pilots side.

I most likely would never step up to a twin, but I gotta admit that is a beautiful conversion/upgrade to a 20 year old plane, she looks like new! Do you ever use the wipers? They look out of place on a modern plane. Kelly knows his stuff, what a great addition to the team!

As great as the KA looks, they never re-shaped the windscreen and got rid of the wipers? Maybe too structurally complicated but they just look a little out of place. Beautiful plane! Thanks! --gary

Nice video Rich. The King Air 350 has great ramp present in my opinion. How roomy is the cockpit? Would a guy who's 6'5 have trouble feeling comfortable?

Not super easy to get into like a lot of airplanes, but very comfortable once you are seated. Should be fine for 6-5 but I would try it out.

Interesting you land with props low RPM and then bring them forward after landing is this a new technique

Same technique we use for our King Airs. Lower noise. Less drag. And we don’t use reverse anyways (you can still use it, but fuel topping governor limits reverse RPM to 96% of selected RPM).

A 300 is actually not a 200 with different engines. It is a 350 with a 28" shorter fusealage. 300/350 share: triple bus electrical system pitot style engine inlets (huge advantage over 200 "smiley face" inlets 3 spar wing 300/350 have same wing, same fuel capacity, landing gear. Many other lesser items but for sure NOT a 200.
