Got Leaks? Trying to track down that pesky coolant leak or just test your system before you really need it this summer? This week on FM Live, Brandon Fitch gives us the basics on how to pressure test your cooling system, and why you might want to do it.

This channel and the MX-5 community is awesome. I’m a noob but I’m learning every single day, and I don’t want to stop.

Perfect timing. I just spent the afternoon tearing the engine down to the timing belt hunting for a leak which drips on the undertray. I can't find it. Thanks for covering this, I'll get a pressure tester. What do you think of putting UV dye in the coolant and using a UV light to find a leak? Do you ever do that? Would I need to flush and replace coolant after doing that?

@JamieBainbridge You could put UV dye in the coolant, and it would certainly help find the leak. There's no reason that you'd NEED to remove the dye afterwards, though typically to fix a coolant leak, you'll need to drain the coolant anyways.

Sorry for the weird request but if ever possible could we get a video on replacing the fluid in an Automatic ND transmission? I cannot find any information on this. There seem to be different methods and fluids but no clear step-by-step instructional video on KZfaq.

My 02 miata is pushing airbubbles into the overflow 🙃🙃

Well....that might be real bad but I'd check the basics first like your cap. All systems are going to push some air but if it's continually overfilling your overflow tank, it might be a headgasket.

Just replaced Radiator, Hoses, Water Pump on my 95 NA8 last year, but I still had a bad leak that turned out to be a rusted out metal tube that spans that closest portion of the path under the exhaust manifold from the Water Pump. I was stuck without parts and it seemed that part was difficult to find. To avoid having to rent a car and wait for parts, I patched the hole with JB-Weld and it's still working. Needless to say I keep close eye on the temp gauge. Is there a common name for that pipe? And yes I'm considering your By-Pass System. I have a new Radiator, so maybe not your Cross-Flow Version of the Radiator. Waiting till I get back to Oregon to dive into that stuff. Thanks for the video!

@billgordon4423 That part is known as the water mixing manifold. Thanks for watching!

So, just want to confirm, the little plastic tank on the NA, is actually an overflow tank in case there is too much coolant in the system? Or am I supposed to have extra coolant in there as a reserve tank?

Yes, it's an overflow - but the system will also pull fluid from it occasionally. It should have some coolant in it. There are markings on the side showing the correct level.

Are there any weak areas on miata cooling system that cause issues and should be on some type of preventive maintenance program based on mileage or time. Such as the expansion tank, water pump or radiator.

I'm not a pro like these guys, but a weak area to look for on many 1.8 NAs is the heater hose directly under the CAS. If you have an oil leak from the CAS oring (super common), that oil will make the hose spongey and eventually blow. Hard to see by just looking in the engine bay. Also cylinder 4 (back of block) tends to run hot. Mostly just becomes a problem if you're increasing power with forced induction (like these guys have). Lastly, the black plastic radiator, if stock, will start to turn green or brown anywhere between 80k and 120k miles. Replace if the color has gone, since it will more than likely break soonish.

@thinkingimpaired5663 After this many years, the stock NA/NB radiator is usually a ticking time bomb as ajhurst95 mentioned below. If the radiator is changing colors, get it replaced asap! The heater hoses sit pretty close to the exhaust manifold, so they will tend to age out more frequently than some of the others. The stock plastic expansion tanks also like to discolor, develop cracks and leak over time. Additionally, many NA and NBs at this point are missing their plastic undertray, which reduces the efficiency of the cooling system. NC Miatas have an issue with the stock expansion tanks cracking and leaking, so those should be replaced, ideally with a metal one.

do you guys sell a pressure tester?

We don't, unfortunately. Most auto parts stores/Harbor Freight will carry them.

Some auto parts stores even have a tool loaner program. Orielly Auto Parts here in Arizona have some of them available.

Why not use a waterless coolant that has a higher boiling point like Evans? It doesn't make any pressure in the system.
