I've owned some Kanta No2's for about 2-1/2 years now. I became a Focal fanboy when I first heard the Utopias back in 1995 - I wasn't alone as I spent a great afternoon at the Stereophile Show with Roy Hall and Sam Tellig (Stereophile, RIP) listening to them in the demo room drinking Roy's Scotch. With the Kanta's, the combination of the 3rd gen tweeter and flax make for an incredibly articulate and warm presentation paired with the right electronics. I'm always blown away when I see speakers like 2's in a tiny 12x15 room. They _need_ room to breath. I first had mine in a great room that was approximately 50x30 with a 20' ceiling and central staircase. The bass was amazing (slab floors). 3's would have been overkill. I had been looking at the 1's when I lived in a townhome with room about 30x17, they'd have been perfect. You just _can't skimp on electronics,_ or you'll be greatly disappointed. Go for Arias and spring for a good amp instead, upgrade later. Mine are paired with BAT amp/preamp and don't need half the power, but appreciate the current. TBH, I think the Sopras are sexy AF, these need to be seen in person to fully appreciate (I have white/oak). Some people don't even know what they are! One listen however and all is forgiven regarding looks. I had originally been ready to purchase 1028 be's on closeout (I love those too!), but the dealer offered these as demo units barely broken in as the lockdown panic was just hitting. What better way to spend months inside? The W drivers are very different, and people looking for a slightly more analytical presentation with slam should look there. I'd upgrade to Sopras, and might at some point if the Kanta No2's weren't so darned amazing.

well said, though regarding rooms size listening habits (volume) can be a big factor. I love the Kanta sound, I'm just bummed the look isn't growing on me. The No1 just look so silly atop stands.

@@NemoPropaganda I think the polymer face works a bit better on the floor standers, but entirely wrong on the 1's. A speaker at this cost shouldn't look like something somebody kludged together from 2 different speakers. The all-black doesn't look quite as pronounced. There is an easy fix though! Trade 'em for Sopra No 1's! BTW, in case you didn't know Kent from Maze Audio passed away a couple of months back. His son Justin will be continuing on, but eBay wouldn't let him keep his dad's account/storefront, so that'll be changing. Hopefully they'll be able to start up custom orders in another month or two, he's getting rid of current inventory.

These look so nice. The thing that has prevented me from giving up my towers is the effortless dynamics. It’s like they don’t break a sweat on even Hans Zimmer. When I rotate stand mount speakers in, it’s like they have to try so hard. It’s like your great Mustang to Porsche GT analogy. Nice overview/review! Still loving my Choras, your right though Focal can get all the detail and presentation out at very low volumes, both my Sonus Fabers and Pioneer Andrew Jones speakers sound great but they demand you crank them up a bit! I’d like to get some separate amps for my Marantz NR1200 my Sonus fabers are plugged into, the AVR is enough power to drive them but just barely, I think I’d unlock more detail at lower volumes if it had more juice. Focals don’t demand a lot of power and sound awesome at all volumes! Love your style never melodramatic, simplified but detailed review! Love the comparison to other brands I’m always curious cause I really prefer that forward presentation you get with brands like Focal and B&W… always curious what the other hot brands sound like, like you talked about here. Hey bud, this is your fan from Mumbai again. Never get tired of saying this, but you speak to me, the constrained audiophile (financially, space-wise etc.). And I truly appreciate it. What I have found is that every room (most rooms anyway) have unique solutions from an audio set up perspective. A unique fingerprint if you will. Sonic physics is situation-dependent, not absolute. More elitist audio folks on YT (as or less knowledgeable as / than you) will say shit like NEVER place a subwoofer between your loudspeakers. Like it's a law. IMHO this is not the case, my b&w sub sounds its best right between my psb bookshelves. Your comments? Thanks as always.

Great and beautiful speaker. Wonderful sound. The gold standard for speaker wire connection is Speak-On, but the inertia to replace standard binding posts that have been in existence for decades is huge. In addition to the market for overpriced aftermarket or custom binding posts from companies like WBT or Cardas ….. Speak-On connections are the industry standard in safety and reliability. It’s a shame that high end speaker makers don’t make the switch to a very inexpensive but highly reliable and SAFER connector. Safety safety safety. And cheap!

@@-MarkWinston- 12.3 isn’t dark at all, tweeter has good realism to it, the bass is slower and muddier though I’d agree there. I have Harbeth p3esr xd now. Which is a totally different level. When Focal came onto the scene, their upper end Utopias used titanium tweeters and even after they coated them with titanium oxide. Especially in car audio, those would shave the hair off your eardrums. It's a stigma that's followed them, but they are nowhere near as fatiguing now than when they started.

"Oh shit" sums it up. When I was shopping for speakers, I heard the Chora, Aria, Kanta and Sopra next to each other. I listened to the Aria first and I was like wow..... this is what Ive been missing all my life. That clarity and resolution just grab you and never let go. Then the Focal distributor switched to the Kanta and I was like god dayuuuuum.... I couldnt afford it though. Then he switched to the Chora and I thought to myself, it should be the worst sounding one of the bunch. I was wrong, I prefered the Chora to the Aria! I told the distributor right away that I liked the Chora more and he told me this "You are not the first one to say so, the Chora has a livelier and energertic sound and most people that came in to listen prefer a sound like this." At this point, I was ready to pay for the Choras and then he played the Sopra 1. When I heard them, I was thinking of ways to get the money to buy them. I even went as far as contemplating to sell my second car. Thats what the Sopra did to me. But alas, I have to settle for something I could afford so I requested for the distributor to switch between the Chora and the Aria (806 and 906, 826 and 926, and the 948). I first paid for the 806, then I bought the 826 a month later. Then I bought the 906 again a few weeks later and Im still waiting for a good deal on the 948. This has been my Focal journey so far, I dont know if I could ever afford a Sopra or even a Kanta because all my speakers, 806, 826, 906 and my future 948 dont even add up to a Kanta, let alone a Sopra. Heck I could add the Chora and Aria center and it still wouldnt cost as much as a single baby Kanta. Crazy huh? Then he led me into another room where they had the all the Utopia range in a row except the Meastro Evo I think. They had the Grande in a special separate room which I was too shy to ask for a listen. I only heard the Diablo for a while and I went home with this thought in my head : fuck the Sopra.

honestly brother it was just an experiment for me, I wanted to see what the expensive stuff was all about, in some ways I was a bit dissapointed I was expecting something more, don't get me wrong, Kanta No1 is great in many ways but I do feel it's $8k USA price is a bit too high, I see it selling in some countries for $5500 which I think is a more reasonable price. I ended up selling them and buying the Mon Acoustic Platimon instead, it's a similar sound but more natural in the midrange with respect to vocals and string instruments. I feel Platimon is a better alternative for anyone considering the Kanta No1 in the USA. Hope that helps.

My only beryllium tweeter experience is with the Revel m126be. The detailed enveloping soundstage is really impressive but something about the response is fatiguing and I was never sure what was to blame because the measured response doesn’t look bright. Beryllium is said to have a signature sound which is bright. Seems the manufacturers are afraid to make a beryllium tweeter not sound like a beryllium tweeter as customers would be wondering where all the money went. Personally, I'm more intrigued with the idea of Paradigms aluminum/magnesium tweeter. Doesn't hurt that it's more in my price range.

@@Roof_Pizza Focal also uses a memory foam like material called Poron in their tweeter suspensions that never wears out. They say it dampens around the 2 kHz and 3 kHz range where people have great sensitivity. Both Focal and Paradigm use aluminum/magnesium tweeters, but Focal uses an inverted dome and Paradigm uses a huge waveguide to spread out the highs.

S3V is a 55 lb powered behemoth. S3V is a tool built to be used by engineers while the Kanta is a product designed for pleasure. Essentially this is an apples to oranges comparison. Which one you prefer will as always come down to personal taste in what kind of sound you value or what "better" means to you.
@abboberg
@abboberg Жыл бұрын
@@NemoPropaganda True - the S3V is 2" wider and some listeners will not have the space for that. As far as the vertical dimension - the S3V is 4.5" taller, but that is eaten up by shorter stands, plus you get a powerful, 9", dedicated, 500W woofer out of the deal. The 15" depth of the two speakers is the same. The S3V weighs twice the Focal, but that weight is borne by the stands (or bookshelf, or trunnion mount, in this case). As far as sound - isn't the idea to accurately reproduce the sound the audio engineer mixed down? If you want to intentionally color the sound, and cover up bad recordings, then you can spend far less on a pair of bookshelf speakers. You're not going to beat the Adams as far as accuracy, and you'll be richly rewarded with the great recordings. As far as listening pleasure - I agree with the reviewers out there - the Adam Audio S3V have extremely smooth, non-fatiguing sound, if that is any consolation. I can understand that the old-school philosophy of stereo is a labor of love - some even continue using turntables, tape decks and tube amps. Perhaps that is the market niche of these Kantas. Give me oranges any time.

@@abboberg I'm sorry I don't understand, are you trying to convince me your speakers are better? If so I am happy for you that you like them but I have not heard them and I am also not interested in the S3V or any other powered studio monitor. I personally don't care to chase accuracy or what the engineer intended but if that is how you enjoy the hobby I am happy for you.

Rythmik subs didn’t pair well with these?
@NemoPropaganda
@NemoPropaganda Жыл бұрын
it just wasn't the best match, Rythmik bass is more composed while JL is more wild & aggressive, that wilder bass of the JL seemed to fit the Kanta better so thats what I used. That certainly could come down to personal taste though.

I am not the biggest fan of the look, because they look to modern. I mean they look premum, but I prefer more real woodveneer or even a real wood front baffle with a hard wax oil finish. For that kind of money I'd like to own speakers that look like they were handcrafted by a carpenter.

i like many of your videos however let’s be very clear in the fact that price has absolutely nothing to do with whether an amp brings out brightness or fatiguing qualities of a speaker or whether it causes a more warm easy listening characteristic - rather it’s the amp design and components that dictate this
@NemoPropaganda
@NemoPropaganda Жыл бұрын
Right, any amp can be voiced any way the designer chooses. But refinement is what you get in the higher price points. It's hard to describe unless you've experienced it but imagine a speaker is bright, hyper detailed, even sharp, but no matter how hard you drive the volume knob it's always easy, pleasing, and enjoyable on your ears. That's refinement and the only way to get that is dollars. My Kinki Studio pre amp and mono blocks are voiced very similarly to my $500 emotiva integrated amp, but listening to Kanta on my emotiva amp is a miserable experience despite that while I can listen to Kanta on my reference amps for hours on end. There are some hidden gems I'm sure but I have not found any personally.
@audioexperience
@audioexperience Жыл бұрын
@@NemoPropaganda more dollars *generally* gives more refinement however degrees refinement of audio components does not equal lack of brightness or harshness or mean that you get more synergy of component matching. you can have a cheap 1k integrated that will sound smoother than amp/preamp separates costing 20x that is super bright. what you're describing is synergy between those components that you find to be to your liking and that's great - all i'm saying is that just because you throw dollars at something does not mean it will be synergistic nor will it produce a certain sonic characteristic that you're after - i will be doing multiple videos on this in the coming months that you will find interesting

@@audioexperience I never said spending money will guarantee any specific sound. I simply said you want to match the Kanta with components that are of a certain caliber and those compenents generally speaking will cost a bit. @@NemoPropaganda lolol can't say for sure but the bluesound powernode at under 1k does a LOT better than stuff i've had experience with costing 10x regarding a more musical listening experience - lots of other amps are so analytical that it's hard to listen to for more than 5 minutes when paired with speakers that have potential to get super bright such as the case with metal dome tweeters :)

IMO - these speakers are ugly af. too many elements that do not coalesce. they should've stuck with either natural or composite all the way around - axe the wood veneer go for a solid color ala KEF and make the baffle seamless to the box - the woven cone would still stand out nicely. as for your take on diminishing returns? i totally understand where you're coming from as i've experienced it for myself. you may find yourself still searching for the perfect analogy to explain it all to someone who hasn't heard it for themselves. on the other hand, not sure you could've said it any better. soooo close... still - great vid!

I strongly disagree, you most likely heard them with an amplifier that didn't have a refined enough top end. These speakers are highly resolving and will reveal the weaker links in the chain. You can't blame the speaker for the amplifier or DAC not being up to par or a poor match. Many speakers are fatiguing like Dali Oberon One, B&W 607, etc... I find may speakers fatiguing. This just isn't one of them.
