It's the age-old question of which is better for portraits? Shooting wide or shooting tight, choosing your focal length can make a big difference in your photos. From how you interact with your subject, to intimacy, your lens choice impacts all of that.
In this video, we shoot with 4 different Canon L-Series lenses, all on a Canon EOS 1N, shooting Kodak Portra 400 film. The 35mm F/1.4, the 50mm F/1.2, the 70-200mm F/2.8, and a 17-40mm F/4 lens.
There's an intimacy shooting wide. You can literally touch your subject while shooting them. You're up close, or up closer. You also get more of your scene in the shot.
A 50mm lens on a 35mm camera is supposedly as close to your 'normal' vision. It is a solid choice for just about any scene.
Once you get above 50mm, closer to 85mm and above on 35mm, it would be considered more of a portrait lens. When shooting at longer focal lengths, the image is compressed, bringing the background in closer to the foreground, or your subject.
