I would definitely appreciate a similarly technical video on the "full frame look". Too often you see bs on youtube that attributes it to some magic qualities of a larger sensor, and it would be good to have a comprehensive reference of specific technical advantages of the larger format.

Straighter angles at same field of view (wider field of view at same focal length), more light collected at same T-stop and ISO setting. (Edit: hilariously I managed to write my short answer wrong... hehe. And yea great subject for a video)

@@randomgeocacher I agree with your second two points. Your signal to noise ratio with a large sensor is certainly improved over a small one at a given T-stop, allowing the same ISO to look less noisy. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by the straighter angles thing.

A lot of us choose to not use focal reducers as they add glass. We feel that just adapting a 645 to a FF35mm is enough. This way you eliminate glass edge distortion. The best part of the lens is in the middle.

I just discovered your channel, and it's great. There's a few things i want to say: A factor that would enter into the equation of DoF would be the circle of confusion which is what makes that, with lenses that give both systems the same field of view (25mm for m4/3; 50mm for FF), a 1/4 of FF sensor like a m4/3 has not 4x the DoF of Full Frame, but only 2x. If you want to hear an explanation look at min. 4 of Filmmaker IQ's Hyperfocal video. I don't know how focal reducers affect circle of confusion. The other thing I want to say is that it'd be great to see a video about the FF look you mentioned. I've found it very difficult to comprehend what are the things that differentiate a FF image from a crop sensor's with an increased aperture.

Great overview and lots of details! I just wish there was an option to disable the “transformation” of f-stops and focal length, and just have the camera show what the lens is really set at. I think the “speedboosting” of metadata is the cause of 99% of the confusion about speedboosters ... and primarily done to tout/market the capability of the device rather than being helpful to the operator. Especially when an adapter is semi-permanently screwed on it’s fairly obvious the operator likes to work with adapted lenses terms rather than the native mount terms.
@alex-stone
@alex-stone 3 жыл бұрын
The camera does show what the lens is really set at. The focal length and aperture really do change when using a speedbooster.
@randomgeocacher
@randomgeocacher 3 жыл бұрын
@@alex-stone I fully understand what compressing the image circle does. My point is that changing the metadata is not helpful to many users. For example, someone operating a speedbooster Super35 and a full frame camera at the same time for an interview, will only get matching settings incredibly hard. There are other situations too where it just make things harder. To many users it would be much easier if there was a camera menu option to disable the metadata transformation. Not to all users, but for some, it would really help. For c70 owners semi-permanently screwing adapter into the body, I imagine several would prefer working in full frame terms.
@alex-stone
@alex-stone 3 жыл бұрын
@@randomgeocacher don't think of things in 'full frame terms' - a lens' focal length and aperture are independent of format size and are not relative to anything in terms of full frame. By updating the metadata to reflect the actual focal length and aperture, this only makes it easier for the user - especially if their A cam is FF and their B is speedbooster S35. For instance, if the B camera now says 35mm, this will match the field of view that using a native 35mm on the A cam will give. Equally, it also helps match exposures - if both cameras read f/1.4, then the exposure is the same, even though the Speedboosted lens might now open up to f/1.0. I used to shoot with an FS7 (with Speedbooster) alongside an A7Sii with manual lenses. Not having this automatic metadata adjustment made things harder as it added an additional step to have to think about when trying to match FoV and exposures.
@randomgeocacher
@randomgeocacher 3 жыл бұрын
@@alex-stonemy point is that the metadata thing is only helpful to one set of working and I think many/most do not prefer to work in that way. Regardless of how you want to work the best option would be to let the user decide. For me, I would like the metadata to say 70mm when the lens is set to 70mm. Sure I can try to compensate and reverse engineer in the head the difference, but the transformation just adds an annoying extra work and unclarity that I find utterly unhelpful. For me it could just say on the packaging how great it is and what it does, and then I would like to select “Do not improve metadata” in the menu. I’d rather buy native lenses than have to deal with the speedboosters making everything confusing. And given how many confused debates this metadata transformation adds to forums etc it seems it creates a lot of confusion / problems to many users.

Careful when you say you get a full frame look. When you use a focal reducer, you are adding glass to a lens and changing the actual focal length of the lens. A 50mm f2.8 lens becomes a new lens essentially with a focal length of 35mm f2 with a focal reducer. Therefore, you could just use a 35mm f2 lens without a focal reducer. I see a lot of misconception that a focal reducer will make your crop sensor into a full frame sensor and this is not the case.

@@joestaehly2427 a 50mm lens on 135 / FF has the same AOV as a 35mm lens on S35. But at the same Tstop, the 50mm on 135 will be 1.5 stops shallower in terms of DOF / back blur. Stop the 50mm lens down 1.5 stops and a 50mm lens on 135 / FF and a 35mm lens on S35 will look almost identical. Add a focal reducer and mount the 50mm on a S35 camera and you move the point on convergence in the lens - so the 50mm becomes a wider lens, albeit with reduced image circle, one that now only covers S35. Using all the light captures increases the stop. So 50mm (a standard lens on FF / 135) has not become a 35mm (standard lens on S35). It doesn't really emulate

I'm attempting to adapt the Canon f/2.8 65mm 1x-5x MP-E onto an Olympus OM-D E-M1X. If I understand the video correctly, there will be no difference in DOF in either direction (increased or decreased), whether with the use of a straight EF-MFT adapter, or with an EF-MFT focal reducer, but the use of a focal reducer will recover one stop of lost light. Assuming that's correct, my biggest remaining question is whether or not the AOV and/or working distances will change with a straight adapter vs. a focal reducer. When mounted on a FF Canon body (such as my older 6D), the MP-E's normal working distance is rather shallow/small, particularly at higher magnifications. It would be beneficial to see those working distances increased to allow for more light, and more room for flashes other than a ring flash between the front element and the subject. Lastly, I'm wondering if models like the VILTROX EF-M2II, Commlite CM-AEF-MFT and Fotodiox Pro Fusion Redux Adapter are actually suitable alternatives to the significantly more expensive Metabones T Speed Booster ULTRA, or if they are underperforming in some way. Thank you in advance!

So a 50mm T2 on a full frame and a Crop sensor is still a 50mm T2, just cropped in. But a 50mm T2 on a Crop sensor with a speed booster is not the same as 50mm T2 on a full frame but changes the 50mm T2 to a 35mm T1.4? So for instance would a cropped sensor with 35mm T1.4 and a crop sensor with speed booster and a 50mm T2 would be the same look?
@professionalpotato4764
@professionalpotato4764 2 жыл бұрын
Yes a 35 f/1.4 on APS-C will look like a 52.5 f/2.1. The depth of field is the same. So those 2 lenses would look identical as long as you apply crop factor to both focal length and DoF. Also if anyone tells you there is more distortion on the 35mm on APS-C, tell them it's false. All equivalent lenses have 100% the exact same look and distortion is a myth. A 12mm on m43 shooting at 3:2 aspect ratio will look 100% the same as a 24mm full frame when the image sensors are in the same plane.

Great video, the only thing that I don't like on the C70 is showing the focal length as 35mm for 50mm lens. On a MFT system I always think of a 50mm lens as having a 100mm effective length, calculating the crop factor as it relates to the full frame equivalent of the lens used. Why wouldn't you then calculate the 50mm lens as a 50mm full frame equivalent when using the focal reducer? Couldn't Canon have a menu setting to select when using the focal reducer that then sets the focal length on the camera as the full frame equivalent value as that is what is being achieved? I don't understand why you talk of the camera as 35mm when without the focal reducer you should refer to the 50mm lens as having a full frame equivalent of 85.5mm?
