Focke-Wulf FW 190 WWII Fighter Startup. BIG Backfire, Yow!

This is an engine startup of Rudy Frasca's new-build Flug Werk-built Focke-Wulf FW 190 at the Planes of Fame Museum in Chino, California. A very impressive replica of the WWII FW-190, this aircraft was built in Germany and was assembled by Matt Nightingale in California with quite a few innovative features (i.e. newly designed oil coolers, for one). There are several other of these aircraft flying today by lucky owners. Quite an impressive aircraft, just beautifully built and it includes a number of original WWII Focke-Wulf components. And it sounds great too! This aircraft is flown quite often and it is currently intended for it to be shown at the Planes of Fame's annual airshow, Oshkosh and the Reno Air Races in 2011. Nice!

The big round engines have always been temperamental with starting, which gives them a unique charm. Also remember that wartime aircraft were brand-new at the time and had a skilled ground crew to keep them warmed up and maintained in top condition.

Probably a trick or two that's been lost as well. I watched a video of a 109 pilot showing how to start it. He shows one way with his hands all crossed up and says that's what the book says but don't do that and shows the much improved way they figured out to do it. He said the book way was awkward and they were finicky and apt not to start if you didn't have everything just right. That unfortunately is just the sort of knowledge that tends to get lost.

@carbster010: Yes, this aircraft does have a P&W R-2800 engine. It is very slightly larger in diameter than the original BMW 801, but it fit. It did present some oil-cooling problems but they are being resolved. The fellow in the plaid shirt and shorts seen checking the aircraft while it was running is Matt Nightingale and he was the one who put the aircraft together with the R-2800. Some of the other FW-190s completed have the Russian ASh-82 (M-82) engine.

Nice restoration! I love the Focke Wulf fighters, both the short nose version (BMW 801 radial engine) and the long nose version (Junkers Jumo 213 inline engine) I’m a believer in historic accuracy and authenticity in Luftwaffe aircraft, including the swastika !👍👍👍

+Wayland Lee This one is not a restoration but a Flugwerk replica from a project in Germany. The project goal was a lower cost option for the high performance warbird collector, lower insurance, etc. They were sold as bare kits with buyers completing assembly. The owner for this one went in a new direction and installed a P&W R-2800 and a custom cowling. Very nice. Flugwerk sold about 21 examples, but only around 9 or 10 are complete and flying.

My dad, a B-17 pilot in the 385th BG, told me more than once he considers this version 190 the most beautiful fighter of the war. Though he did not care to see them all that much because there were usually 20-30 of them... LOL. He much preferred to see Mustangs, Lightnings, Thunderbolts and Spitfires sharing the sky with his bomb group. This is a 1 gorgeous airplane! Sometimes they don't look real to me in color, the opposite impression my father has ;) I love the look of the A series myself,

@EnterpriseXI: Yes, an original FW 190 was meticulously restored for Paul Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft. It was completed and test flown just a few weeks ago (as of Jan. 2011). It has an original WWII BMW 801 engine, the only one flying today. Even the ORIGINAL radio was restored to operational status and just that took an entire year to complete. The aircraft is now at Paul Allen's Museum, the Flying Heritage Collection in Everett, Washington, USA and it will be flown occasionally.

The replica Fw190s are scale, with a few changes from production line models such as using an oil cooler and intake in the upper gun bay, no weapons or armor installed by the manufacturer, larger fuel tanks and a different engine. They were sold as semi-complete kits (for lower costs) and the buyer of this replica has added an 18 cylinder R2800 with a slightly larger cowl. The original Fw190 had a 14 cylinder radial.

+Paul Moffat It is one of the Flugwerk replicas that were sold as kits to buyers to complete construction. Flugwerk was a German company but the kits were manufactured in Romania. Flugwerk founder Claus Colling passed away a few years ago and the Fw-190 project and parts were sold to Gosshawk in Arizona. The builders for Frasca did not use the Russian/Chinese ASh engine (14 cylinder) but went with an R-2800 Pratt. Only nine or ten of the twenty-one Flugwerks have flown, with a few accidents. I think another buyer is also planning to use an R-2800.

These new-build replicas had a new design three-blade prop with electric prop controls. One of the first flying suffered a prop failure with a blade going into full feather with severe engine vibration and a crash. The four blade prop is the original Tu-2 prop for the ASh-82 engines in the replicas, and was a substitute until the prop failure was corrected. The fix was to switch to mechanical prop controls and the three blade is back.

A German company produced a series of 12 full-scale replica kits as a lower cost warbird option for buyers, including the one above fitted with an R-2800 engine. This was increased to 21 replicas, powered by a Russian/Chinese engine. Some are flying while others are still in assembly. Original blueprints were incomplete, so there was some reverse-engineering needed. (An owner of an original told me the replica parts are hard to fit with original parts.)
