Whilst the most popular Focusrite audio interface for the entry-level market has long been the Scarlett 2i2, I wanted to get something that would tick more boxes and thus last a bit longer in my studio...
** UPDATE **
You can watch my latest video on the Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 and the Focusrite Control software by clicking the following link:
• How to use the Focusri...
0:00 - Specifications & unboxing
2:56 - Hardware Setup
4:00 - Software Installation
Main reasons i chose the Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 are:
- It has more inputs and outputs than the 2i2 (more flexible and future-proof)
- It has two dedicated headphone outputs (separate channels to allow different mix for producer vs vocalist for example)
- It has software loopback function (meaning you can directly record whats playing on your computer which is good for streaming etc.)
- Has legacy inputs and outputs SPDIF & MIDI (you just never know when you'll need it!)
- Is powered by a dedicated power adaptor (meaning you don't get annoying speaker pops when unplugging USB before turning the speakers off)
- Can be used as a standalone unit (you can set up the mixer/routing in software, unplug the USB, take it to a gig and not even need a computer to operate it. A basic example of how i use this right now is that i have a Google Chromecast Audio plugged into the line inputs on the rear, which means i can play music out of the Yamaha studio monitors without having my laptop plugged in at the desk)
Software included (via download from Focusrite website): Ableton Live Lite, Pro Tools First, Samples, Plugins, Virtual instruments

Hi, thanks for you review! :) I am hesitating to purchase it. Do the two different headphones output allow a singer and a whichever instrument player to each have a pair of headphones or it's not meant to be used in this purpose? (Sorry for the question, I'm not an english native speaker) I'm really planning to record for example a duet with a friend, and my idea is to both have a pair of headphones in order to here the instrumental

Cécile DIY hey thanks for asking and no need to apologise :) short answer yes you can use it the way you want. You can configure each headphone to have different sound or the same sound, it’s one of the main reasons I bought the 8i6! It may help to download the manual, I think they do translated versions so do check. Cheers, Trevor.

Trevor Swayne thank you so much for your crystal clear answer!! It’s incredible the possibilities it offers. And by any chance, have you ever tried it with an iPad? Trevor Swayne hi. It’s a standard separate hifi amp and yes I’m running speaker wire from the red & black terminals out the back. I’ve got jack plugs coming out of the rear output 1&2 from the 8i6 which terminate into the aux ports on the amp as phono leads (red & black) still no sound. Worth pointing out that I’m a novice with these futurite devices. Cheers for responding 👍

MP Creation Odisha depends on what you want to use it for I suppose. Given the price and the amount of flexibility you have I’d say it’s good. I don’t regret buying it myself. Ultimately at beginner / intermediate level it doesn’t matter what you use as you can make it work for you and upgrade further down the line. Hope this helps. Trevor

Hey I have a question: Do you know if is possible/correct to use the line imputes on the back to record microphones signals by using external pre-amps connected through balanced TRS? As you mentioned in the other video this is a very versatile interface, and I thought it would just be great to have the option to record 6 microphones. Thanks in advance, cheers!

Hi Ross sorry to hear, can you confirm you have the 'Focusrite Control' software? Also can you confirm what type of input/jack you are using to connect? By default hardware inputs may not be enabled. What i did was open up the software with the USB connected, go to 'Output Routing' at the top, click on the monitor output 1-2 (this also means any sound that comes out of headphone 1), then click on the '+' button to the right underneath where it says 'Hardware Inputs'. For the back TS/TRS line inputs you would select either 3, 4, 3-4(stereo), 5, 6, or 5-6(stereo). You should then be able to control levels in the Focusrite software of those inputs. Let me know if this helps, also if you want more in-depth around setup check the description in this video, i've linked the user manual for both the hardware and the software.

Would this be able to have my Maschine MK3, Tapedeck, and Turntable all hooked up and able to play audio out of the same set of monitors, as well as PC audio? Thank you for your time.
@TrevorSwayne
@TrevorSwayne 4 жыл бұрын
Russell Dorgan hi Russell, I believe so yes. As the machine is usb you should be able to choose it’s output to go directly to focusrite instead of its own outputs. However if there is no option for that you could use midi out of the maschine into the focusrite and then you’d still have all the rear inputs for turntable and tape deck. You’d still have the two front inputs too if you just wanted to use that instead of midi. Cheers

The monitoring knob is only for outputs 1 and 2 on the back so if you’re using any other that’s why it’s doing nothing. Else you’ll have to check the routing in the control app to see what’s going on.

Can guitars and basses etc be plugged into the back line inputs? Or is that exclusively for keyboards etc? I have a choice between a 2i2 or just spend a bit more for the 8i6. Logic is telling me to get the 8i6
@TrevorSwayne
@TrevorSwayne 4 жыл бұрын
ryan abbott it’s not recommended to plug directly in the rear as you can only change the impedance on the front two inputs (via instrument / line switch in focusrite control software). It would technically still work in the rear but you’d get a crappy signal and you’d be wasting your time quite frankly. I’ve not tested this yet myself but in theory you could take the ‘line-out’ or ‘headphone out’ from a guitar amp and throw that into the rear inputs. But my question to you would be why not just record separately and use the front panel for a good signal to start. hope this helps cheers!!
@ManishForGood
@ManishForGood 4 жыл бұрын
@@TrevorSwayne But what is the use of those rear inputs then?
@TrevorSwayne
@TrevorSwayne 4 жыл бұрын
Manish Baj literally any ‘line level’ output.. so keyboards, FX returns, aux out from other music devices. Basically anything that isn’t a guitar or mic. Right now I’m using the rear ones for the output of my google chromecast audio, So I can play music on my nice speakers without having the laptop connected via usb.

@Tony2dH 4 жыл бұрын
Have you tried your mic with another interface before and liked it there? If not, you might be better off with a different mic instead, as the mic will have a far bigger impact on sound than the relatively small gen1 vs gen3 preamp difference. Hi, apologies for not seeing your comment sooner, by now i'm sure you've figured it out but for the sake of others here wondering the same, unfortunately the rear inputs aren't strong enough to record microphones, they're only really meant for 'line level' devices, e.g. keyboards and synths, or an external mic-preamp.

Question. I currently have a Komplete Audio 6. I've been looking into upgrading to a new interface and have been considering the 8i6. Would you say it's worth the upgrade? Would there be a significant difference in vocal recordings?
@TrevorSwayne
@TrevorSwayne 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dylan, speaking on features alone the 8i6 has two extra line ins, plus can be run standalone without a laptop as it has its own power supply. I can’t comment on difference in vocal recordings; you’d be better testing both side by side or searching for someone who has. That said if I was hedging bets I’d say the focusrite would be better given their time in the industry and success with other products. I’ve got a NI DJ controller and gave to say the support isn’t as good and company is under Rocky times so would not consider buying NI in 202. Question you asked about upgrading, would it be significantly better? Probably not... a significant difference would be from better room acoustics, better microphone, and a dedicated external mic preamp. Just my opinion, hoping others in the YT community weigh in too! Koyomi good to hear it works but I prob wouldn’t recommend keep using a different adaptor. I’d contact the retailer you bought it from and get them to give you replacement as it’s obviously faulty cable. If that’s no good contact focusrite support and explain the situation

bro please help me. i wanna record, and have tried to. my problem is, that as soon as i plug the mic into the interface, it starts working, so i think that everything is fine, then when i go to my daw and trynna put some plugins on the tracking track nothing happends, what should i do? i use fl studio btw. but my old interface worked without a problem. it's just like i'm broadcasting or something? i cant hear the real sound that i'm recording with all the effects on it before it recorded it i hope you understand and can help

Young Mozardt Peter Lindhardt Hey there. Sounds to me like you need to mute the inputs on the focusrite control software, and turn on monitoring from within FL studio then you should hear your affects on the track live. My other video you commented on explains how to do this although I use ableton, it can’t be that different however. Go check it out! Cheers. Trevor

Trevor Swayne it make no sense. In The ‘input settings’ there is no option of mutting, there is only option of “Line,instrument, Air and pad” ?
@TrevorSwayne
@TrevorSwayne 3 жыл бұрын
Young Mozardt Peter Lindhardt you need to go to the mixer tab and mute the input there.

Trevor Swayne then i try “output routing “ The options are “ hardware inputs, then i mute That one, but it dont make any difference, it’s The same. Still 2 signals at The same time

Brizzy_tv it’s technically possible but as none of the rear inputs have a mic preamp the signal would be really weak. Ideally you need a mic preamp with 1/8th inch TRS line outs to go into the focusrite. Cheers, Trevor

@@TrevorSwayne Thank you again for the quick response do you think something like this would be better www.amazon.co.uk/MOBOREST-jack-Stereo-Microphone-Cable/dp/B074YH3234 or would I be better off going for one of the focusrite interfaces with more xlr inputs.
@TrevorSwayne
@TrevorSwayne 4 жыл бұрын
Brizzy_tv you’re welcome! Umm problem is any cable on its own is just passive so signal will still be weak. Your options are either buy a dedicated preamp to plug the extra mics in or maybe a mixer that excepts the amount of mics you need or as you said buy a focusrite with more xlr in. My preference would be the latter for simplicity. In the long run you’d be better off just spending more on the interface now.

ScoodaNinee _ it’s possible your os version is out of date which is why it’s not working either that or your device is broken. Make sure you’re on latest Mac OS version if you can and try same installer. I’ll see if I can dig out The installer I used if it helps

Satana el no worries, and fwiw when using Ableton Live 10 and my really old 2011 macbook pro, i was able to get an input latency of 3.72ms, output latency of 3.49ms and an overall latency of 7.21ms without any audible artefacts. This was at 64 samples. At a push i could record at 32 samples but i'm confident in any latency under 10ms, if it was really an issue a newer computer would improve latency as well.

@@TrevorSwayne wooo my Guitar Helix LT got more latency. Latency depends on interface and asio driver but to hold low latency without clicking, nioses and lags, pc need strong cpu, daw programs also need strong cpu and they use more Ram. Good to know that this Focusrite meet my expectiations, i need to record guitar with my singer at the same time with double headphones monitoring. I found w loot good interfaces but in this quality with 2 input for headphones probably i will buy this interface 🤗

Gore Melian interesting point. I really wanted the dual headphone outputs and whilst I’m not a fan of software control I have to say this focusrite control software does the job nicely, and is ultimately less limiting than the hardware equivalent for this price range.
