I have been foiling since the 1990’s using just my laser printer. Since the foil adheres to the toner, just print your design, words, etc. Then lay the foil over the design, attaching with a little tape on the edges. Now run it through the printer again - “printing” a blank page and that’s it. Since you already have a laser printer, no need for any other gadgets. Works for me every time! Give it a try.

@@sylviasalinas6100 If it is a laser printer... Inkjet printers do not work. I've heard some kinds of laser toner don't work - which is why I nursed my old HP4P along since the 90's. I have finally gotten a new laser printer but I've not tested it out with the foil yet.

More than once I got out my regular iron to heat up a page that jammed just before getting heated. It worked fine. I've also used my heat gun to set the toner but unless you have some heat-proof tape to hold the foil on, I'm not sure it would work for foiling. I still have my old bits and carriers for my old HP4p. Sigh. Memories! LOL!

I was doing this technique years ago before the Minc ever came out. I purchased a travel iron at a thrift shop for a few dollars, the kind that didn't have steam holes on the bottom just a flat base. I used parchment paper to place over the foil. It took awhile to determine the correct heat but worked perfectly. Best not not to move the iron in circular movements just a firm downward pressure starting at the top and working downward. Didn't always have much luck with a laminator, kept missing spots.

Another good cheaper alternative to the fuse tool is a wood burner or soldering tool where most times you get a flat iron tip with the tool you can use, you can also get them with temp adjustment. I use them for image transfers so they should work with the foil.

Thanks so much for risking it all in the name of art! It encourages the timid amongst us to try some new things! I don’t have a laminator (budget) so its nice to know i could use an iron! From a few things i read seemed to say glue with high tack is good with foil. One thing i think makes your foiled fuse squibles better than markers is that you can’t get the shiny reflectivity with markers that you got with fuse + foil. 👍👍

I got my first heat foil in the early 90’s when we got a mono laser printer. I love that you can again get the foil - I have a stash now! LoL! The bit with the glue-stick looks more like a lot of gold/metal leaf looks. Gold was applied over a reddish color traditionally - I think to make it easier to see missed spots. There has been a glue ink pad although i don’t know if it is still made. You can use it with stamps. :D I also have some heat-activated glue for fabric, which again, I don’t know if it is still available. I do love glittery sparkle! you can paint glue on with a brush - the kind used for metal leafing. It stays tacky for a long time which is why it works so well. SO many things that are possible!

As someone said, you can use double sided adhesive sheets to cut out shapes, but besides freehand cutting, you can use a craft punch, manual or electric die cutter to get a shape or text to foil. Other foils that work with these adhesive sheets are Couture Creations, Jones Tones, Art Accentz Foilz, and icraft Decofoil by Thermoweb, who also have meltable adhesive sheets that work with foil for fabric. You can also buy adhesive craft foam to foil for a raised effect, or make you own, using adhesive sheets over the craft foam before cutting. You can apply adhesive over mini wooden or chipboard embellishments to foil them. Most of these are good ways to use up small scraps of unused foil.

Clever ideas! I wonder if heating up a cast iron pan that has a good amount of weight to it and placing it on top of the foil would get a good consistent transfer? My hunch is it probably would. If it covered the whole area you want foiled you wouldn't have to drag it across because the weight would provide pressure.

Sadly inkjet printers do not use toner. However Some copy machines do and so if you say printed out a sheet via your inkjet printer in black print or design or outline shapes you can take to a copy machine or to Kinkos or similar copy shop and ask them to print it out in toner and return home to foil with those copies. Hope that helps out those who do not have a laser printer or laser copy machine. (I just bought a tiny older model but brandnew Brother laser just so I could play with foiling and cardmaking etc. I am thrilled so far with results. Hubby had an over 24 year old monochrome laser printer that he upgraded last year to color laser and those also work with foiling across any of the colors as it does not have to be black to react with toner sensitive foils. Anyway his new printer is sensitive and does not like cardstock. He could no longer find cartridges for his older one also a bit touchy with cardstock so I finally searched and found this printer for less than 90 dollars brandnew and small tiny foot print too. I love it and allows so far for me to pass cardstock straight through without bending to pop out the top. It's been fun foiling with a laminator to date. Yes I went with the monochrome non wifi model but they make the same machine in a wifi for 79 more dollars and a color version and a wee bit bigger for 100 plus more. I decided we don't need two color lasers and I wanted the smallest with good reviews. Funny the manufacturer said the machine was not compatible with cardstock. The bullet points listed when I bought it said it was as did some reviews so I bought it and it's great and for less than 35 dollars I bought a set of 4 full size toner cartridges generic that should last me years even though I've been playing with full sheet black out toner and foiling the entire sheet then die cutting out the plastic foiled cardstock. I found both 65 and 85 pound smooth white cardstock has been great to tone and foil this way. Did not try 110# or higher yet. I'm so pleased I doubt I'll want to go up in thickness.. Anyway a lot of paper crafters have access to copy centers in more populated areas. We live in rural Montana near Canada border and nearest would be 100 miles away. And just not worth the fuss involved at that distance. But great option for others who have one in their neighborhood so to speak.) Also I printed toner on a medium rasberry cardstock not hot pink but deeper than regular pink cardstock and foiled it and it was beautiful. I was making tags for a friend who sells sock gnomes. I just had to cut out two circles back to back using one round die cut shape that allowed me to have perfect sized circles for each side. I foiled the gnome drawing on one circle and wrote text on the other and foiled both. Had 8 tags on one sheet of 8.5 x 11 inch paper/cardstock. Cut each out with circle. Glued half way end of tags leaving a way to pop open top of the two to insert a ribbon or string to use to attach to a gnome for sale. These were not price tags but more ID tags from the seller's point of view. So one side said Peace Makers by....her name with a Peace sign in the center that foiled slightly different color than the full text in the circle I designed. Which made it really more interesting and neater. On the flip side then was a little foiled gnome drawing (I had 3 different gnome drawings in a thick outline like shape.) then I colored in all their noses and a few the dots and stripes left white on their hats and robes. They were adorable and the sparkled foils I opted for tiny star patterns and small blue blosoms for one foil just worked out really neat. I used rainbow foil for some and solids for others but the textured or tiny printed like stars worked the best as these were small tags. About 2 inches. I am making a larger size more fill in foil for a friend using a Boston French bulldog like design for her handmade yarn goods. That's my next project this week.) Anyway lots of ideas here for foiling using toner even if you don't have a laser printer...you can design on your computer and print out on your inkjet in blackwhite and take to a copy center that uses TONER copy machines and or can copy and print via toner laser printers for you. I recommend you test one or two designs before going all out to insure you do get great results. Some centers allow you to use your own paper or cardstocks too others require the options they sell you. So that varies from business to business. Good luck.

Hi Sophie. It needs to be printed with a laser printer. I haven't tried too much colour and then black, but you'd need to print the colour with an inkjet and then the writing with a laser for it to work. I hope that helps!

@24get24give
@24get24give 4 жыл бұрын
you probably could, if they are heat reactive, or if they're on a carrier sheet (like couture creations, deco foilyou , and I'm not sure who else's can try using them w/ double stick tape, a glue pad, or pen or just painting on some regular glue, let it get a bit tacky, whichever kind of glue you use then press your foil down well and then lift it off to reveal a perfectly foiled sentiment, if you're not getting good results w/glue, run the paper through your die machine w/o a die for the added pressure
@cherylbettin1715
@cherylbettin1715 4 жыл бұрын
Some of the nail foils work, some the heat transfers ALL the foil, not just to the toner, and the only way to know is to try them. But even the ones that transfer all the foil work really well with the glue that stays a little tacky when dry (Tombow Mono Multi is one) or with Scor-tape (racing stripes!)

How would you use this to transfer the stencil to a pour painting? I really want to stencil a border to my Celtic heart shaped canvas and then gold leaf it.
@PlumMashable
@PlumMashable 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure on that one Fiona. I think the best way to do that with gold leaf would be to use a glue with a thin applicator. I can suggest the Sakura Quickie Glue Pen or the Zig Glue Pen for a really super fine line. But the Tombow Mono Multi Liquid glue also has a really fine tip applicator that would work too. I would say just run that along the line of your stencil and glue away. Good luck!

5:47 "I've now found a use for my iron" Sorry, you don't know me and I don't know you but this made me literally laugh out loud so hard I scared both cats! I had an iron in the early '80s when I was young and trying to make a good impression at work. In 2014 when I needed an iron for crafting, I couldn't find it. Twelve moves plus long having given up on both ironing clothes and trying to impress anyone ~ goodness only knows where it went! I had to buy a new iron for crafting. Your tone of voice when you made the statement was just the right note to tickle my funny bone. Let me know when you find a good crafting use for the crockpot my MIL gave me as a wedding present 35 years ago. Couldn't lose **that** in the moving shuffles. 15:19 Double-sided tape or tape dots: one project where this effect would be perfect is doing weathered, aged, vintage papers or journals. It looks just like foiling that has weathered the effects of time. Very good effect for specific projects. I'm definitely gonna try this as a border around a page, one tape width wide. It will be a very cool aged effect with little effort. **Suggest** that you use a burnishing tool of some sort. A spoon, bone folder also for the glue stick experiment. Would help make better contact with the foil.

I know this message is a year later for this video, but I like that this video is still available for us people who see the foil but can't afford to buy just one more tool for crafting! LOL... but after seeing the one with the glue - I think if you had a glue stick that was like a pen - then you could write with it and set it aside.... or for the fuse tool - it reminds me a lot of a wood burner. I have a wood burner that is dual or multi-usage, because it has temperature gauge. I know I can use it with regular foil and wood burning as well as embossing powders. These newer foils have that plastic or vinyl that they are on, so I often wondered... I guess I will just have to test that type of foil with my woodburner and see how it does compared with my other foil, that is well... on foil.
